RE: [IceHorses] Icelandic mare on Dreamhorse/Sarah's suggestions
>>> Wow, thanks for doing all that research! Sadly I live in Maryland, so had dismissed those guys back when I first looked at them. Long way to ship a project horse that people expect you to pay for on top of the shipping cost. That's the truth. I think it's unfair for people to expect to find ideal homes for their problem horses, AND to get more for them than a buyer would have to pay for another breed or mixed breed, with a less complicated past. Shipping is expensive, more so as gas prices increase, so even when we take on a "free" horse from across the country, the costs mount. Financially, a person is usually better off to buy a youngish, unspoiled, "clean slate" sort of horse with no past baggage, but I'm one of the ones who is a sucker for the horses with pasts. I think that too many people think they can take on a rehab/project, put a minimal of time with them and turn around and sell them for a profit. They MAY be able to do that and get away with it sometimes, but is it fair to the horses? Is it fair to the buyers? I think once a horse is a rehab/project, he or she will probably carry some of those scars with them for a long time, maybe forever. They may forgive a lot, and even become wonderful horses (Tivar is a prime example.) I like to say that horses are much better at forgiving than at forgetting. Looking at horses on dreamhorse is a favorite past time of mine - perhaps I could be a professional horse matchmaker :) Good luck - I am sure the perfect horse will surface at just the right time and place. She's an awfully nice pony. Nancy

Jacki I have forgotten where you are but I was perusing dreamhorse tonight and found all of these potentially wonderful companions: Hi Sarah, Wow, thanks for doing all that research! But keep up the good work! Clearly I have "my best people" on this task of finding Svort a friend. Re: [IceHorses] Icelandic mare on Dreamhorse/Companion for Svort
Hi; I have a project mare of sorts who should probably go to a new home if the appropriate one could be found. Katina is a mare that I have had for about five years. I bought her as a brood mare but my shoulder is not up to dealing with youngsters. She has had two very nice foals for me - a filly (who is now four) and a colt (who is now three). Katina was previously used as a broodmare but was also trained and used for trail riding. She was imported. She is very, very frightened of men and especially frightened of shoers. The previous owners would drug her for shoeing. We've worked with her some and I don't use shoes - so she is reasonably good for the farrier (I have never drugged her; we just took our time). I haven't really spent that much time with her (too many other things to do) but I think that she would really like to be someone's friend. She tries - checks me out, carefully, and is eager for treats. She is so pretty - a very pretty little dished face. She's about 13 HH. I'll see if I can find some photos of her. Penny

Jacki, look on dreamhorse, do a search for icelandics in any state and go way back because it was a couple of months ago, one on there was awesome, and very cheap. very deadbroke and calm and easy to ride, but it had gone blind in one eye from a cataract.. I thought at the time how awesome it would be if he could find a good loving home. And a blind horse NEEDS a companion. Janice -- even good horses have bad days sometimes.
Re: [IceHorses] Icelandic mare on Dreamhorse/Companion for Svort
Well, I waited until I was completely certain, but it turns out that this little mare is already sold. The sellers were out of town and someone in West Virginia had sent them a deposit. I was waiting until they got home to see if the deposit had actually arrived before I gave up hope, but I am back to looking for a friend for Svort. Somehow, now that I have seriously considered another Icelandic, the goat or donkey idea just doesn't seem as appealling. So, if you hear of any potentially nice project horses please think of me first. Jacki

She is only five, so lots of time to finish her and / or maybe restart her.She just looks like a diamond in the rough to me and from the description. I think there's probably a lot of potential there to be developed. It would be nice if she could find her way into a horse-friendly, empathetic home that would let her move along slowly and thoughtfully in her training. > . . .now tell my husband. Often you see purebred horses for that amount that have registration issues. There's no mention of any problems, just that she's green. Now, her temperament number is given as "5" (with one being the most calm/laidback and 10 being the opposite), so perhaps that's a clue as to her low price??? Either the people think she's too calm, or perhaps too spirited I think, if someone were looking for a horse to finish, she might just be a great find. Her price just might be a reflection of the owner wanting to place her in a good home, hay shortage in the area, or the economy in general. -- Renee M. in Michigan
