[fsug-tvm] Memory Issue in VOSTRO 1000

2009-02-09 Thread Krishna Kumar Kanoor
All

I came across a problem which appeared strange for me.

The following is my LAPTOP configuration:

   - *Vostro 1000, AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 (1.9GHz/256KB)*
   - *2GB, DDR2, 533MHZ 2 Dimm*

The system setup was showing only 1 GB of RAM. I removed the RAM and
installed it once again. Now the system does not show display and does not
boot.

I interchanged the RAM modules from their respective slots.

Now, the system setup shows 2GB RAM.

When I boot Debian it works perfect showing the 2GB RAM. However, on booting
Windows VISTA it shows me the blue screen.

Any thoughts on this.

   1. How does this works in Debian?
   2. Is one of the RAM module failing?
   3. If yes, Is there any support for DELL in Trivandrum? My laptop I
beleive the warranty is limited to US. May be it is going to be a paid
   support in India?

Thanks Regards,
Krishna Kumar

[fsug-tvm] Re: Fedora Installation Manual

2009-02-09 Thread BINNY THOMAS

Thanks for your valuable suggestions

But to be frank I am an Ubuntu fan and I would like to concentrate my
efforts on it, because that's the distro that introduced me to the
world of Linux and according to my view 'new users' should try Ubuntu
rather than Fedora (which by the way is not at all bad).I would
encourage experienced users (who might not require a manual) to go for
Fedora.Besides I don't use Fedora that much and have little experience
with it.

I hope I am not offending any Fedora users and I don't want to start
a 'which distro is better?' flame war. It is baseless since all are
based on good old Linux.

I will certainly put all the suggestions into the Ubuntu installation
manual and come up with a new version soon.

Sincerely
Binny

Hi Binny,First of all thanks for taking the time to come up with the
manual for installation. I have gone through the manual and I have some
 thoughts/comments -

First of all I think this is a good manual for the entry level user who
simply wants to install Fedora on their computer. If this is the intended
audience then I believe you should also include instructions on partitioning
an existing windows system and setting up dual boot since a lot of your
audience will likely be wanting to use this option.

Please also mention in the beginning of your manual that the user
BACKUP their data - some people may not realize that the default install you
have shown in your manual will partition their HDD and any existing data
will be lost - it is better IMO that you mention they BACKUP before starting
the install process just in case something unforeseen happens and their HDD
 becomes corrupt.

If this manual is intended to be a comprehensive one regarding the
various options available in the install process then you need to mention
the other options available in each step (for example - screenshots for the
advanced partitioning process, and for adding or modifying software) - this
will show users all the options available (you can always recommend which is
the default and easiest way :-))

An explanation of some of the terms might be helpful to some of the
users (especially new ones) - for example - what is a partition? what is a
 hostname? what is a repository?

I think you have done a very good basic framework - all that's needed now
is a little extra polish to make it so much more useful :-) One approach to
do this is to describe a typical target system (Hardware specs - (Pentium,
512MB RAM, 40GB HDD) and software - Windows XP, MS Office) that you want to
convert and then you can detail both dual boot and complete replacement
 options.

Again Kudos for the effort - BINNY

 Sincerely
 - Nikhil

Apart from this, how about doing a one page installation manual? Which

2009-02-09 Thread David John

Hi Yadu
Is there involvement from the students of ECE/Applied? There is a
good distribution of tools available for electronic design, which is
sufficient for running labs for the whole Electronics BTech curriculum
(circuit design, simulation, power electronics simulation, signal
processing, VLSI design layout)

The distro is Fedora Electronic Lab (FEL), more details are here
http://chitlesh.fedorapeople.org/FEL/

This distro is being successfully used at Model Eng College for
running BTech VLSI MTech courses. I can give an introduction and a
3-5 day workshop on how to use the tools (if required)

[fsug-tvm] Interesting tool for the toaster

2009-02-09 Thread Nikhil Nair
Hi, Now that we have this cool toaster that will burn the base operating
system for you. I think the next step should be to supply some of the
awesome software thats available on Linux as part of the install.
This would be especially useful to those who want to use Linux for more than
just a basic OS like maybe college grads and
universitieshttp://groups.google.com/group/ilug-tvm/browse_thread/thread/1c7f23cd6f85ed58/72f2f82b1f76e1ad?hl=enlnk=raot#72f2f82b1f76e1ad

I have come across this cool tool to do exactly that
http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/ - check it out - the possibilities are
very interesting - for example some of the guys who set up an electronic lab
installation at Model Engg. College (refer to this
discussionhttp://groups.google.com/group/ilug-tvm/browse_thread/thread/232bf1ad5557d3ad/83e7111589a730a3?hl=en#83e7111589a730a3)
could potentially standardize it, create a meta package and distribute it.
We could have a package that pulls together software needed for a
graphics designer and create a custom installation.
It would also be very useful for people who have limited internet
access.

Thanks and Regards
