If you haven't found this already:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/how-to-schedule-interactive-task-with-at-or-cron-360511/

If you want to run GUI applications (not ncurses based, but apps that
can bring up their own GUI), then use something like this in crontab
file:
10 2 * * * export DISPLAY=:0 command_to_be_exec'd

But make sure your desktop environment is up before this gets executed.
You can use 'auto login' or 'timed login' feature of  your login
manager (gdm/kdm).
PS, I don't know how good BitTornado is.. I use KTorrent and I'm quite
happy with it.

[fsug-tvm] kind of attack

2009-04-02 Thread Shino Jacob

I was browing the net and testing windows on linux, suddenly a warning
msg showed that some one wants to connect(with IP), I declined and
tried to connect to the ip,
I was able to connect to that machine using terminal service client.
and it was showing chinese words, and most alarmingly, it had my name
in the user name box.
How on earth is that possible?

[fsug-tvm] Re: GNU/Linux Syllabus and Meeting

2009-04-02 Thread Nikhil Nair
+ 1 on using these books - http://www.it.iitb.ac.in/~sri/ssrvm/

The books are under the following creative commons license -
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/byncsa/2.5/in/ Only 1st and 2nd standard
books are available at the website. I flipped through book 1 and book 2 that
is available on the site - they are quite nice and engaging. They are
written with assumption the OS will be a flavor of Ubuntu with GCompris and
Tux Paint installed. They teach the basics of what a computer is - the
various parts, IO devices, etc. They also show how to use it to paint, play
music, write using text editor.

The coolest thing IMO is they healthy habits like proper sitting posture and
the importance of moving away from the computer every once in awhile and
some yoga exercises as well. They also show how to use the computer safely.

The books are based on the ICSE syllabus and I think they will cover all of
Std 1 - most of Std 2 and the text editor portion of Std 3 as specified in
the wiki - http://gnulinux4cbse.pbwiki.com/.

[fsug-tvm] Re: Can Linux destroy the hardware?

2009-04-02 Thread Visakh

Hi Yadu,

On Apr 3, 9:49 am, Yadu Nand yadudoc1...@gmail.com wrote:
That was a really informative and well laid out post :)

Thanks for the compliment :). I was forced to write this up because he
mentioned that reputation of Linux had taken a beating. That just
makes our job of preaching FOSS a little harder. So I had to try to
dispel some myths. The only way to win is to be competitive. Happy to
see that you found it interesting.

And yes. I never meant that ubuntu does damage by
 using default management options.

I didn't imply that- I make it a point never to attack someone
personally. I was just using your point to add some relevant details.

 Its just that the net
has got lots of power management tweaks that just might
turn out to be unhealthy. But it also turns out the tweaks
are also labelled completely insane ! , experimental
etc which is enough of a warning :)

Thats interesting! (Completely insane?!! LOL!!). But that's exactly
what I meant- the engineers should know what they are doing. The
'experimental' and 'insane' schemes are unlikely to make it to release
builds, since any hardware damage will cause serious dent in
reputation for the distro- even when it is not the distro's fault.
That's why I added that I had no problems with them.

Gokul Das
