Unix was used to develop GNU until GNU/Linux was available. The Free Software movement is about creating software that respect users' freedom. We did not reach where we are today overnight, and we still have lots to do before everyone can use a full Free Software system. What I am talking about is the project at http://sourceforge.net/projects/free-cad which is currently at version 0.7. I have not looked deeply into the project, but it is active and growing. Maybe we can look into it and see how good it appears to be. There seems to be another project with the same name at http://www.ar-cad.com/index.html . This seems to be in version 8 or so. It is strange that no one seems to be familiar with this. There even seems to be an Indian (Rajeev Lochan from Bangalore) working with the AR-CAD team. Both projects claim that the software is under GPL/LGPL. It would be good if someone can look more carefully at these and see how good they are. It is possible that these do not really form substitutes for AutoCAD. But I think we should look at them and see how good they are. Best -- V. I think we should have a strict and uniform law on this. Otherwise it will be perennial war. We should formulate it as a legal document and get it accepted by all recognised Universities and educational bodies. -- A. Mani Member, Cal. Math. I am really surprised that this question came from you! Abandoning CAD tools until an FS alternative comes up- sets us back by 20 years in design methodology. Will anyone of us abandon meals when we can't have home made food? FOSS ideology is great- but can we forget pragmatism for it? On Apr 5, 10:36 am, "V. [fsug-tvm] Re: Kerala syllabus includes Power Point
hi, I think the more concerning thing here is, why specify the name of a software. In case of Java or whatever it is, the things which are taught are not and should not be the capabilities of a particular software(unless it is a training for Java/autoCAD for that matter). It should be, how a software system helps in the implementation of concepts. It we specify exactly to use MS PowerPoint, how to teach them the importance of govt. accepted standards? For CAD related things, may be for advanced 3D related things, autoCAD is needed, but i think for smaller 2D experiments, use of Q CAD is ok(for someone who knows autocad, it might not be tough to use qcad). cheers Jinesh K J On Sun, Apr 5, 2009 at 8:10 AM, Visakh wrote: > > Hi, > > On Apr 5, 6:24 am, ".Kenney Jacob" wrote: > > Maybe the same should be applied to Java, AutoCad, and numerous other > > softwares used in engineering education. > > Java is programming language- it doesn't specifically refer to > software. [fsug-tvm] Re: Can Linux destroy the hardware?
No I didn't face any problems with the new system except with the monitor as mentioned which is very old. Well maybe the mains is the problem since my system was replaced many times(one time it was due to prolonged disuse and lizards had made a home in the pc case) and there were electrical problems and Linux has just become a scapegoat in all this. I wouldn't have bothered if I wasn't rigorously spreading the word of Linux to everyone I saw. I didn't want a problem like that to happen to anyone I talked to.
