Anuj, If you have actually take a look at the FOSS scenario in India, the average FOSS developer _in_ India is usually around 30. We are not talking about when FOSS came into being. We are talkking about when FOSS actually started gathering speed in India, when it lost its hobbyist status and gained recognition as a viable solution for computing needs. Besides, if you are looking for someone who knows how FOSS development works and how to manage FOSS related issues succesfully , there are far greater number of people with actual hands on experience in working with people from across the world - a PhD in technology doesn't guarentee it . We as a community should respond to this set of qualifications which seems deviously intent on narrowing down the choices - we need not look between the lines. If you look at the political scenario and how the current state machinery operates in other fields ( the recent KU appointments come to mind ) this looks much more like a purposful narrowing down rather than looking for someone with adequate qualifications. The qualifications doesnt seek any kind of knowledge in FOSS sector as a prerequisite for a "Professor" , while it is mandatory for someone from industry. A professor / lecturer usually teaches FOSS operating systems as part of the "Operating Systems " course during BTech/MCA/BSc . This doesnt guarentee that he is involved in / supports FOSS , other than syllabus requirments . We definitely should respond whether or not it is interpreted as finger pointing to someone . I see many people who have been silent on many things in the FOSS world, like mono or even day to day discussions here responding to the email . It would be good if those people actually respond on other threads too. Actually I saw a mail which recommended discussing ICFOSS's aims and agenda on a different thread . I would really like to see that thread here with active participation like this. -- Ashik S --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ "Freedom is the only law". It is quite strange how you view things. The origin of Free software movement was not with the release of Linux kernel but was a movement started much earlier. The Linux kernel just provided a functional kernel to the operating system. many of the programs required in an operating system (such as libraries, compilers, text editors, Unix shell, and a windowing system) were completed much earlier. Such type of programs were used as a part of UNIX platform If you look into the history of Vi editor it had been the de facto standard of UNIX based operating system ever since 1984. and the development of emacs started as early as 1970. Stallman saw a problem in too much customization and de-facto forking and set certain conditions for usage. He later wrote: "EMACS was distributed on a basis of communal sharing, which means all improvements must be given back to me to be incorporated and distributed." and this could considered as the birth of the concept of free software movement. Your statement that the average age of FSF advocates is below 30 is quite embarrassing because those of you who have started their career as computer professional during the 80's where serious programmers in the Unix OS. At that time even PC was not conceptualized. On the other hand those of you who have started their career during late 90's started their computer career in DOS and Windows OS. For them the migration from windows to Linux was a serious problem since architecture of both the operating system varied a lot. So I think that there will be ample no of qualified people who started their career in Unix operating system and later migrated to GNU/Linux. These people where using GNU tools ever since the beginning of their career. Thats true, all these database applications are bit heavy. A simple programme based on Open Office Base will do. this is the case with small retailers who want to do computer billing and stock taking. all these can be charged also. People wont find it difficult to pay provided the price and service support is tempting them to shift to linux. shibu On Mon, Aug 3, 2009 at 9:24 AM, H wrote: > > > On 02/08/2009, Ashik S wrote: >> >> >> There are excellent library management systems available : >> >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhpMyBibli >> >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen_%28software%29 >> >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koha_%28software%29 > > > > Koha is a bit heavy tool, that has lot of options and needs customization > in order to make it for our purpose. > > >> >> >> -- Shibu K. hi Anil, If you feel like this thread is not the best place to discuss on the ICFOSS, start a new thread. May be a discussion on what is ICFOSS will be good than anything else. I am seeing it is projected and discussed as an organization with responsibilities at multiple levels and expectations from it are very unique compared to similar functioning institute elsewhere. The director is supposed to lead a set of widely varying professionals and academicians to achieve the stated objectives. The qualifications in the advt. doesn't feel like the best for the job.
