I have successfully configured  BSNL ZTE EVDO on Mandriva, CrunchBang (an
Ubuntu derivative), PCLinuxOS etc.  It should be very easy to configure it
in Ubuntu using nm-applet; in fact I did configure the modem in the live CD
mode (ie even before a harddisk install)

No in this case the tar file does not contain the source file bur only the
scripts and necessary files to run Firefox. there  is a script called
firefox inside the folder. You have to make it executable and run it, It
will run the latest version of firefox however it might also run the older
version. Using firefox in such a way is not recommended.

.tar.gz file contains the source for the software. You need to compile the
source and then install it. You will find detailed instructions on how to
compile and install the the software on a 'readme' file.
But if you are a new user and have active internet connection, you can use
package managers like 'synaptic' to install necessary softwares, which is
the simplest way.

There's a 'saturation' setting in Tools > Effects and Filters > Video 
Effects > Basic. If you drag that slider all the way to the left, the 
video will be B&W. But this setting is not remembered with application 
re-start. So this shouldn't cause the problem you reported. Anyway, 
check this setting when a video is played using VLC.

Now for the update, did you specifically update firefox. I don't believe
their is an option like that.(I  could be  wrong though as I rarely update
anything in Linux). However the best way to update firefox would be to
download the latest  debian package from the mozilla website, remove the old
package and then install the new package.
