[fsug-tvm] Re: [OT] Good Camera Brand

2009-09-15 Thread Sebin Jacob
I myself have a Canon EOS 350D and I appreciate their technology. But if you
are in Kerala, its better to use Nikon products for two reasons. First one
is climatic. In the high humidity of Kerala, the lenses are more likely to
be infected with fungus. Nikon lenses inhibits more resistance to fungi.
Second is availability of premium service. More service personals are
accustomed with Nikon than Canon in Kerala. But if you are living somewhere
with less humidity, I would recommend using Canon.

[fsug-tvm] kubuntu 9.04

2009-09-15 Thread Sreenath Unnikrishnan
I used ubuntu 8 and shifted to kubuntu 9.04 just two days back. I installed
it and everything is working including the internet. But there is no sound
in kubuntu other than the start up tone. The mp3 files also doesn't play
plus there is no sound while opening the folders. I tried downloading
libxine, but some of the libxine files cannot be installed. What should be
done to rectify this problem?

If you have the start up tone, your sound card is detected. Now go to

System>Preferences>Sound

Check different combination to get the sound. I had some problem with my
volume controller. So I made some experiments with this, and I found with
some combination my audio player didn't give any sound out-put.

[fsug-tvm] startup program priority

2009-09-15 Thread Adhin D
Hi Friends,

Is there any way to set the priority of auto-startup applications.

I've made XBMC media center to autostart. But the problem is, XBMC starts up
only after the panels etc.. are loaded.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with Gnome desktop.

I really doubt whether you could load any app before gnome-panel using
any gnome config files. But try using

"nice -n 1 " in the command field of start up application preferences

>From outside of Gnome, there is another way to make it autoload : see link [1]
Here I think you can probably achieve the goal using nice -n 1 command prefixed
like :
Exec=nice -n 1 "xbmc -fs"

I also want this tip. In my case NIS server is starting up before the
NFS mounts the remote folders. So NIS searches for a lot time making a
much increased bootup time.

For NIS and NFS the start up priority can be controlled via

In your case it is much simpler to do :

Rename the link name corresponding to NIS server in /etc/rcN.d
(N = runlevel)
to SXX[servername] such that XX is a zero-padded number sufficiently
large. The idea is : the links with lower numbers in them are loaded first.

Thanks,

[fsug-tvm] Re: [OT] Questions we face and a honest self analysis

2009-09-15 Thread Sebin Jacob
About pagination s/w

@Sasi Kumar

Correl Draw is used to design brochures and the like and also in
advertisement release. For regular pagination stuff that we do in news
papers and magazines, the most used s/w are Quark Express, Pagemaker and
Indesign.

@Santhosh

Malayalam hyphenation is not done manually in pagemaker 7. There are several
work around(s) for the same. A little editing in the ASCII font, automatic
space correcting using Cntrl+M>Alt+S, adjusting font parameters, etc will do
the trick in it.

Yes, but I have seen a layout artist (not a DTP operator) doing layout
of a magazine using CorelDraw. And he used to do a fantastic job, but
was rather expensive. I know, because I used to help run it. But it was
English, not Malayalam.
