Most of us have very different ideas about how Linux should evolve in our
society

*Entirely forum-driven manner* Vs *Professionally supplemented manner* or
any other mode?

here we would discuss about monopolisation / buisiness ethics / etc, in a a
region based context. shall we limit the scope to Kerala state?

I am not aware of similiar threads, please mention if there are.

[fsug-tvm] Re: Professional services in Linux ... discussions ...

2010-02-17 Thread nishandh
this discussion was initiated in the thread :
http://groups.google.com/group/ilug-tvm/browse_thread/thread/be1d72545fd7b44e#
which stated like addressing an institution which provides
professional services in Linux is not really preferred, in forums. I
think it should be debated for positive evolution of linux in our
society.

take this example: One among my thrust area is video production. I am
not glad to say, that sometimes I am running partly on cracked
proprietary software for the 'capture-edit-export' workflow. When i
turn to FOSS, I am dealing(I, the non-geek) with problems that could
be very defeating, like suddenly finding a bug, which would render my
edit-list unable to be exported to a rendering system. Substituting
video hardware are going to cost me in multiples of thousands, i am
not easy with that.

In this specific case, It is different from a Linux expert discussing
a configuration issue, here it is a biologist looking for support.
When i cant configure much, and i am in a time cum manpower shortage
situation, my option would be to go for professional services in
linux. Its better when I can go into an institution and avail from
their past experiences in setting up different linux systems, than
wait for somebody else in the forum to answer, or digg in internet to
find myself with a configuration I cannot buy in this part of the
world.

I am happy that there are firms in Kerala, which installs Linux in the
systems taken from them and deals with bugs where ever they can. Thats
beyond what forums can do. I need such institutes to exist, and their
services should be addressed.

hi

with respect to the idea of manually editing the grub.cfg, it is
specifically stated by grub developers not to manually edit alter its
contents as it is an auto generated one. below is a good howto
regarding setting the grub parameters the instructions are very simple
enough and can do wonders for you as i have found personally

Sorry. I could not understand the topic when i have replied. I think
that you have replied about linux compatible bluetooth dongle.

I don't know whether ZYXware has bluetooth dongle available for sale.
Anyway, i will enquire about that, to them.

Also, please add necessary quotes for reply, so that the person

I am amazed the message was understood as a new topic.I found somebody
enquiring for linux compatible hardware, I posted one among the most
reliable sources i found. this would remain in the internet relevent for
years as a reference material for all the people in the similiar situation.
I am not part of Zyxware. I am sorry I could not post a model number as I am
 not good in it.

i don think tht would be spam.and I dont think somebody would be aware of
such institutes if we dont address it.I knew nothing of zyxware two years
back. and am still not aware of other institutes except SPACE. I donno they
 are providing professional service ..

I am not part of zyxware, but i do subscribe to part of their pholosophy. i
like their business ethics. I feel like I am living in a really evolving

Yes. One of the experiences i have got is from ZYXware. I have copied
all the ubuntu repositories from them, which would otherwise
impossible for me to download.

Also, i can refer to them the GNU/linux installations i could not do.

So, that types of services should be there. Free software is not
against business or charging users the installation or service
charges.

According to GPL and OpenSource mantra,
is it ok to sell the source code of a product??

I developed a software and I am ready to make the source code open but only

I don't think those instructions are that simple. I'm not a geek, I
couldn't understand it properly. I'd say that it is for geeks those who
needs highly customized grub.

One thing I learned from my experience, if you just want to remove some
entries or to change the names, direct editing is much safer. If something
goes wrong, you can fix it using Live CD. The procedure is explained in the
above link.

2010-02-17 Thread Anoop
Hey All,

I have tried Radio Screenlet which is available with
Screenlethttp://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Homeapplication.

I am able to hear all default Radio stations. I tried to add custom Radio
station by adding Radio Joy Alukkas URL
http://radiojoyalukkas.com/radiojoyalukkas.html. But after selecting Radio
Joy alukkas, i am not able to hear anything.

Is there any other configuration required for this?

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and my screenlet version is 0.1.2

 Hello

I am teaching at Govt College of Engineering, and this mail is to
request your help related to an event Xplore 2010 that is to conducted
in our college on Feb 18th.

Xplore 2010 is an intercollegiate technical contest that is a
prestigious event hosted by our college. During the event, we are
having stalls from various institutes like KELTRON, KSEB etc. At the
same time, we would like to set up stalls that would work as free
software corners. We can have either Install fests or something else
which you guys can suggest. I have talked to Sooraj and he suggested
to float a mail these groups.

Looking forward to your replies at the earliest

images can also be copied via the USB interface provided or over ftp via
wifi/lan.

glad to hear that i could be of help :-).

regrading the i am not geek comment above, i would like to point
out that i am not a geek either and that i was expressing an opinion
based on my experience. the instructions are simple enough if u have
the patience to read through it. i admit is a bit of lengthy manual.
