[fsug-tvm] fsug monthly meeting on June 12.. pls suggest a venue..

2010-05-28 Thread prakreet
We had planned during the ubuntu release party to conduct a monthly
meeting of fsug on second saturdays.. Guys, thus the next meeting is
on June 12.. Time is 3pm as usual..

we had an opinion that we could conduct the meeting at a different
venue this time.. i think christ nagar school as venue of this month's
meeting would be great.. they had asked our help to install linux and
also give an intro to teachers on how to use linux.. if they could
open up their computer lab to us that day, we could have our meeting
as usual n also finish the installation at the same time.. if some of
their teachers are present that day we could also introduce linux to
them.. all in one go.. what say guys..

if this venue has to be arranged someone would have to talk with the
school authorities.. aashik n prasad sr had gone to the school n
talked with the teachers there.. so can u present this proposal to the
school authorities n post their reply here..

[fsug-tvm] developing USB device drivers

2010-05-28 Thread arun ashok
Hi all,

I am an electronics instrumentation engineering student with no prgramming
experience in Linux. (although very familar with ubuntu). As a part of my
final year project, I am trying to
develop a device(possibly an HID like a mouse) and I want to know the
feasibility of developing a USB device driver for that device .

Or will it be a better option to write a small program to run the device on
your own system; which of these would be a better utilisation of time??

I searched google but found a lot of information which took me nowhere. Also
want to know about the tools available in linux.

regards,
Arun

Hi,

GIMP is bit tough to teach students of 5th standard. Well, just teach
them about brushes, selection and cropping. The basic. Don't go in
detail. The tool named pinta could be a replacement for MS Paint like
tools. I really suggest to introduce GIMP as a digital canvas, than a
photo editor to students.

Introducing Gcompris and Gbrainy to kids will also be useful.

the content we created last time is at
http://enableit.in/wiki/index.php/Gnulinux4cbse

I suggest using GuidoVanRobot (http://gvr.sourceforge.net/) instead of
using kturtle. We can use the pre build lessons included with the gvr.

Also Gcompris is a very good tool for children. There is an activity to
create animations/movies with it.

The approach should be to enable the children to use the computer for
solving problems. Just teaching the tools wont be enough for that.

We can identify one or two activities for each of these tools and the
children will learn the required features of the tool to do that
activity.

for example, "creating stamps for tuxpaint" can be given as an activity
for gimp. In this the children will learn how to resize image, make the
background of the image transparent etc..

for openoffice, introduce the openoffice draw first and give them
activities to build posters and charts.

the time is very limited, so i dont know whether this approach will work
or not. Any way we can build an outline for the first two three chapters
so that the school can start teaching it.

Also
want to know about the tools available in linux.

regards,
Arun

2010-05-28 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
@Raru I understand a 5th std student can grasp and can be very good at
it(upon the child's interest). But keeping in mind a classroom environment
where a teacher's explanation is not sufficient for all and provided they
have lot of topics to be learned in other subjects. It will be actually an
overburden to an average school going student. And finally the student will
be asked a lot of *theoretical* questions for the written examination. The
child may find it really hard to memorise. And also even when we teach the
student all these technologies the student/child is not allowed to do a
single assignment of any subject using computers(this should be changed).

I think we are planning to *introduce computer as a tool*. And for a student
I think it will beneficial for him to learn Open Office Draw or may be Dia
or something like that. According to the child's need in other subjects. I
feel that GIMP is a complex tool to be introduced and doesn't(not 100% sure
though) suit the needs of other subjects.

*Request:* Can you also provide a list of topics which are covered for
Computers in other classes, especially the lower classes. So that we
understand how the course is designed.

@ Sistla Venkata Abhishek,
Why should you need to compare with Microsoft or any other ???.
GIMP is a good one.Basics can be given to 5th standard students. Once I had
told some basics to my brother who is in 5th standard and he grasp it very
easily. So I prefer GIMP.

I know that this is not the appropriate thread to post this question .. but
since the topic of GIMP and TuxPaint are going on .. I would just like to
ask something ...

MS Paint .. This was one MS application with which all the basic
requirements of painting and sketching would be fulfilled .. so ... is there
any application under GNU which is similar to paint .. ??

Yes, to understand the intricacies of raster graphics would be difficult
for a 5th standard student. But a basic introduction to GIMP may be
okay. Another way may be to start with TuxPaint. But a fifth class
student may find it too child-like. Perhaps, we could first try showing
TuxPaint and GIMP to students of class 5 and get a feedback on what they
feel. And then we could decide which one we should start with.
