the mailing list.

Nice initiative with the meeting and blog, BTW! Congrats to everyone
involved! Please publish any future calls on the mailing list.

 HI Geo,

Its just my suggestion, just remove the present flashplayer

be getting missing plugins window and directly install the plugin
using the Firefox wizard itself. Then restart firerfox and try again.

 Hi Subin
I use FEL regularly for teaching at institutes, I know atleast 10
others in India who are doing so. FEL is well supported by Chitlesh
team http://chitlesh.fedorapeople.org/FEL/ and gets regular releases
with each Fedora version, starting from Fedora 8.

Model Eng College, ECE dept is one of the departments running only
open source software (mostly inside FEL) in their labs. It is part of
the institute policy and I have seen it working very well in action.

Please contact me in case you have trouble installing running FEL. I
can help you and also possibly come down to your campus for a 1-3 day
workshop on how to use these tools to do good electronic designs.

On Jan 4, 12:00 am, Subin Mathew subin.a.mat...@gmail.com wrote:
hi, this is Subin, Mar Baselios College, s7 Ec, Kerala University, I
think its not only Kerala University, but also most other universities
in Kerala, prefer MATLAB as a program for signal processing and
SIMULINK ( a sub program inside MATLAB) for system simulation.

These programs are taught (as far as i know) to Electronics and
Electrical students in various semesters. For the EC batch, the
program is taught in s4, s7 and the EEE in other semester ( which i
don't know). I have attached a copy of the syllabus(a jpeg file) of
only MATLAB from the S4 syllabus.

The fault lies in not having a very stable program (like MATLAB) to
run most commands. I have used octave and found it just OK, but not
anywhere near the skill of MATLAB, the commands are similar, but
Octave or even GNU-plot fails in providing all features used in
today's electronic industry.(of course you can share the commands and
  functions and make octave better)

There was once an OS that came through called FEL (Fedora Electronics
LAB) but it didnt install properly or i think the md5sum ckeck didnt
work, its available at zyxware, and the softwares need a lot of
updation, and validation, but their backup services (or the prople who
once wrote those GPL programs) have been stopped, and some of the
documentation is in languages other than English.

In S4 we had learned about simple stuff that could be done through
Octave, but in S7, i think Python also needs to be implemented for the
set of experiments, or so. The MATLAB works on large features like
DSP, Image Processing, Mathematics, Signal Processing simulatons and
so on, SO the question becomes when we have one program, why care to
  learn more?

Still Octave seemed to work with much lesser RAM suck-up when i tried
complex Amplitude and Frequency bandlimitted wave programs on it,
where as MATLAB drained our college Win-XP's ram for 5 to 10 minutes
  fully.

Guys trying to learn matlab programming, Octave is a nice choice too,
same commands work, the matlab looks like a notepad model (like gedit)
and all (command window, editor, graph's, errors) integrated as one
unit, where as Octave looks like terminal ( or like MATLAB's Command
window) and slower, but safer on the PC, as i didn't need to upgrade
to 1GB + ram (as MATLAB will hang your PC even at 1GB)

S4 also uses circuit programs like PSPICE, ORCAD, but i heard some
colleges ( i dont know which) use also GEDA, (which i used for my s6
project and found as easy as PSPICE except some minor errors here and
  there).

The S7 we use some more programs for reading from DSP kits, those
programs are usually shipped from Texas Instruments, so i guess then
we cant say anything to them.

By the way have anyone used scilab , how is it?

1. The picture size can be re-sized and neatly formatted without background
images.
2. The no of pages can be reduced so that a print out can be taken. (no more

2009-02-05 Thread Shino Jacob
Hi Binny,
Good Work. How to distribute this work? This will be really useful for a
beginner who wishes to install ubuntu in their machine. Can you make this
document a bit smaller(not contents) so that if some one wishes to take a
printout will not have to waste too much paper. My be you can also elaborate
on how to make more partitions, logical partitions etc.

And I think modern machines with 2 gbs of ram can even avoid swap. swap with
double primary memory size is for older machines with 128 or 256 mbs of
ram.

And also the swap size suggested in the manual is 500MB. What is the
 basis of this value?
We used to recommend 1.5 to 2 times RAM size for swap. With most new
machines having 1GB RAM, what's the recommended swap size?

Well It was suggested to me by Mr Anoop John CEO of Zyxware
Technologies.I am undergoing training under him as part of my
curriculum. It is he who suggested me to send this manual to the linux
user groups for their review.

As for the swap file, well i took the screenshots using virtual box.
and i only assigned it a small amount of space.

Thanks for your valuable suggestions.
A new printer friendly version is on the way.

 Regarding swap,
Avoiding swap is a bad idea if you plan on hibernating the system.

 From Arch Linux Beginner's guide

If you plan on using suspend-to-disk, (hibernate) you must have a swap
partition at least equal in size to the amount of physical RAM, and some
 Arch
users even recommend oversizing it beyond the amount of physical RAM by
10-15%, to allow for possible bad sectors.

So its a good idea to allocate space at least as much as your existing RAM

Hi Subin,

On Jan 6, 10:43 pm, Subin Mathew subin.a.mat...@gmail.com wrote:

 The point you were saying
A new fully integrated UI, may be a cross
platform one, can give GEDA a new lease of life. Something like
KICAD's UI. As of now, it is still a hackers' toy - not something you
would call production standard. Many may disagree with me on this, but
most users wont even try a design tool that requires them to touch the
command prompt. That's a shame considering how good the rest of GEDA is.
is nice, BUT is it possible?

Why not? They created Free OS, free browsers, free media frameworks,
free everything. How hard is it going to be to develop a new UI for an
already well developed app stack? Remember that even in Kerala, more
than enough talent is available to custom modify or develop software
to meet our requirements (eg: SMC). Anyone with enough experience in
GEDA and some toolkit should be able to do it (provided they have
time). On the other hand, if you dont want to get your hands dirty,
simply outsource the job. With small contributions from the user
community, there should be enough resources to employ an IT firm to do
that job (hmm, I need to ponder this!). There are a lot of firms that
has the ability and willingness to do so.

At this point, that seems much easier than changing the quality of
education. That would require changing the mindset of an entire
generation of students and teaching staff. I am not against that idea-
but in practise, thats harder. Heck! I can't even get them to try
Firefox- how do I convince them to use GEDA? I try my best to
popularize free s/w too. But nobody cares! All they care about is
whether it is easy to use. Tell them about command prompt, and all
your efforts are in vain. I am not understating work of educators like
Ranjith sir or David sir, but ask them how many people take genuine
interest in their ideas and take over their work where they leave off.
That's why, a polished UI for these apps would help. You have to
admit- there are a lot of companies that sell crappy s/w with shiny
UIs. Even SPICE apps that we use at college are generations behind
GNUCAP etc- but they have simple UIs.

Please do not take this as a deliberate criticism. I cherish work
done by people like you and David sir. I always look up to them to
provide guidance in my efforts. Also, I really like the idea of
standardization. Anyway, I would like to know how much support I would
get if I propose such a dev (outsourcing at the worst).

2008-12-29 Thread Eby John
Hi all

thanks a lot guys for your prompt replies. will surely checkout octave and
scilab. i am just another casual linux user who got converted after hearing
parts of stallmans speech in aluva and that probably explains why i dont get
most of the intricate gnu/linux ideology speak about 'alternatives' and
freedom even though that was all stallman mostly talked about apart from
vista bashing and that gnu song!
anyway thanks a lot guys for helping me out.

 hi all,

but both tools are no where near matlab from the perspective of an engineer

and linux version of matlab is available. (information for those who have a
dual boot system for the sake of matlab).

This is what i could find on their Legal Issue

Q6. Is Scilab license GPL-compatible?

According to the Free Software Foundation, Scilab is *not* a free software.
