[fsug-tvm] Re: Discontinuing Install Fests

2009-03-21 Thread Visakh

I really find it hard to believe! Exactly one year after we started
our series of installfest, every city folk interested in GNU/Linux has
learned to install it themselves! Remember how many people turned up
for the first installfest? Either we achieved our targets well beyond
our wildest dreams, or we have seriously faltered in our pre-
installfest PR jobs (No flame intended). I am interested in knowing
what everyone thinks.

Anyway, I am in support of this idea. No meaning in setting up an
install venue if no one is going to install something there. However,
for phase 2, we need some interesting activity to keep up the interest
in FOSS. Any ideas as interesting as installfests?

Even i back this idea. Not to completely withdraw install fests, but to
reduce the frequency, may be once in an year or so.
Now it should be seminars and workshops. Now we are getting only media
requests for new distributions/updates and people know to install.
And prasad chetta it was not a one day install fest at Technopark, it was
five days. Sep 1-5 2008. The third item in the list.
Anyway each of us should tell our friends the need for free software and
should always help them install it and use it.

2009-03-21 Thread Sunil Thomas Thonikuzhiyil
Hi,
The install fests and road shows are good for creating an
awareness. Once the awareness is created , there must be some avenues for
enhancing knowledge. We can reduce the number to one or 2 per year and focus
more on developing a community of power users.

 We can think of

a) One day workshops.
b) Half day tutorials
c) Some invited talks on emerging topics

Also, If we can tie up with some computer institute it will be good
for practical workshops. A small fee like Rs 100 or 50 can be charged to
meet the expenses.

workshops must be conducted for students such as practice in octave as an
alternative for matlab, and like other softwares that students use in
programming field or in animation field they should be made aware of using
free softwares.in my college most computer science have practical labs
in linux they are using hardy they dont know how to do sql in ubuntu for me
too i installed an ide codeblocks for doing c++ programs but it was a mess
in configuring all that to view output so beginners may quit due to these
difficulties and now a days compiz effects is the only thing that attract
them to linux...most people are not good in using open office too

2009-03-21 Thread Yadu Nand

Hi,

In my college ,CET we are doing weekly sessions on basic topics
which would be helpful to a newbie(sadly we haven't had an
install fest as such ).
Anyways with the simplicity of installation that is provided by the
leading distros people actually need to put less effort in the installation.
But the sad fact is that very few put in the little bit of effort to
actually taste the linux flavour. We need people who have had
lots of experience with tools like gdb, gimp, openoffice, editors
and ide's as well as specific tools(qcad etc) to give demos and
talks.
I feel that users would be benifitted by this.

[fsug-tvm] Re: Discontinuing Install Fests

2009-03-21 Thread Anoop Jacob Thomas
There is one more point we should consider.
During the first install fest it was the general public who came for
installations. And in christ nagar install fest it was again few(general
public) and very few students(internal participation).

So next time an install fest is conducted we should be able to focus on the
audience. Whether we are targeting the general public or the
students/employees of the institute/organization conducting the install
fest. So if it is the general public massive publicity is needed, its not
just an expo to get information but a fest to get GNU/Linux installed. So
that has to be given importance.

Now if it is the internal audience we are targeting, make a registration
campaign and find out how many will turn up. If we have required number then
go ahead with the program and give them appointments to come for the fest
with the systems. Now if the number is less then the organizers should
consider helping them individually. Rather than hosting an install fest.

Based on statistics the publicity work is very very less. Two of the install
fests had news paper reports and that helped a lot. And rest didn't have
any, it was just a discussion on this group and it was not known to anybody.
So it is the organizers responsibility to do the PR work and not of FSUG, an
organizer is the one who takes initiative for a program. Well FSUG members
can blog on it, mail the information to friends, institutes and others.

So if we have required publicity and required turn out then continuing with
install fests in this frequency or greater is fine, otherwise just once a
year with a good publicity and turnout will be better.

I have another opinion to install fests, rather than conducting a install
fest, let us do a service campaign every 2 weeks on saturdays or atleast
once every month on second saturdays at a fixed place. And Space-Kerala
office would be an apt location coz of accesibility. Well again if we
volunteers can help them at their houses it is unmatchable.

[fsug-tvm] Re: Discontinuing Install Fests

2009-03-21 Thread V. Sasi Kumar

Since we are discussing future plans, just a suggestion. Some computer
users would like to learn more about using GNU/Linux. Specifically, they
would like to learn about tools available for different purposes (like
web designing, audio-visual manipulations, etc.) and to some extent
about the internals (file system, command line, etc.) They would also
like to learn installation and trouble-shooting procedures. Most of them
wouldn't even know about the different desktop environments. The problem
is that they are employed and will be free only on Sundays or in the
morning or evening hours. Can we think of arranging some workshops for
them? We may need to hire a computer lab. Some school may possibly be
willing to give their lab. Or we may have to hire computers. We should
be able to charge the trainees at least to meet our expenditure. We may
have to do this in small batches of ten or fifteen. What say?
