Basically yes, sir! I am really surprised that this question came
from you! Abandoning CAD tools until an FS alternative comes up- sets
us back by 20 years in design methodology. Will anyone of us abandon
meals when we can't have home made food? FOSS ideology is great- but
can we forget pragmatism for it?

I am all ears for it. That is the ideal solution. But I don't know
which project you are talking about. I am keenly awaiting details.

Back to topic. May I suggest a wikia FCI campaign?

What I am talking about is the project at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/free-cad which is currently at version
0.7. I have not looked deeply into the project, but it is active and
growing. Maybe we can look into it and see how good it appears to be.
There seems to be another project with the same name at
http://www.ar-cad.com/index.html . This seems to be in version 8 or so.
It is strange that no one seems to be familiar with this. There even
seems to be an Indian (Rajeev Lochan from Bangalore) working with the
AR-CAD team. Both projects claim that the software is under GPL/LGPL. It
would be good if someone can look more carefully at these and see how
good they are. It is possible that these do not really form substitutes
for AutoCAD. But I think we should look at them and see how good they
are.

We don't want anyone to use non-free software. But to get the education
system to abandon something as important as a CAD tool would be
virtually impossible. We can suggest the use of QCAD, but we really
cannot expect them to abandon AutoCAD and move to QCAD. A Free CAD that
supports 3D also is being developed. I feel we should see if we can help
it grow faster so that we can soon replace AutoCAD with it.

But Powerpoint is different because it is used by such a lot of people.
If we can replace it with a Free tool, that will be so much more FS
usage. It would be good if someone can draft a letter to the Higher
Education Council and the Education Minister.

But, sorry to be pessimistic -
going by the way government treats FOSS (eg: VAT e-filing), i wonder

Suspecting the real intention of a political party is natural, because
our experiences have not been good. But, in this case, we know that the
Chief Minister is genuinely interested in FS (he had favoured FS right
from the time he was Leader of the Opposition). Moreover, I am not sure
that favouring FS would gain much political mileage for a party. So I
think the support given by the present ministry and the CPI(M) is
genuine. Implementers are different, and they need not always think of
FS. They may not even be favourable. I think that is why we see non-free
software making its appearance frequently. So we need to be on our guard
and point out such policy violations.

Still, I will support the idea and in petitioning them.

So let us write to them and see what happens. We know that the Education
Minister is also a supporter of FS. Let us write to the Higher Education
Board and see what heppens. If not we will meet the Minister too.
