Can you just try to add the network manager applet to the top panel with the sound applet and so on... ? You just need to right click on the panel and select add to panel. Search for the Network Manager applet and add it. You can drag and drop it anywhere in the panel as you like. I had some minor issues in the first week, which was sorted out. I can say ubuntu works great on dell xps systems with nvidia graphics cards.
