Kg,

Since we are on the topic of frameworks, have you looked at Scala and the
Lift Framework? What I find amazing is the performance - it is on par or
slightly faster than plain Java on many benchmarks. To put that in
perspective, it is several times faster than groovy, ruby and python. This
is because scala runs directly on the JVM.

Take a look:
http://liftweb.net/

By the way, I have done considerable programming on python and have used
plone. Fact is, I have used plone to run our own intranet here at
Songbird. I think it is an excellent framework - but a bit complicated to
customize.

If you prefer using Python and like more speed, you can look at the
upcoming Cobra language.
http://cobra-language.com/docs/python/

They are porting this to work over the jvm as well. May be interesting to
port Django over to use Cobra. Cobra and python are similar enough and so
it may not be that difficult.

Regards,
Prem

Hello "(no subject)" thread participants,

Its a surprise that how atleast one of the participants didnot even attempt to
change the subject line to be relevant.

Even if the original sender of the message didnot care about the subject line,
atleast the other participants who reply to that message could have attempted
to change it & educate the original sender.

I hope the participants get it right.

Unfortunately no. No batteries are provided and it has to be hand cranked
for now :)

The language is still quite young - but because it runs on .NET/Mono (and
is being ported to JVM), it should be possible to use the .NET or the Java
libraries.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is just a guess. I haven't actually used Cobra yet.
What I like about Cobra is the fact that it is very similar to python but
really fast, has built-in unit testing support, does not have the awful
"self" parameter needed in python, catches typos at compile time rather
than run time etc.

By the way, Scala can use any java library - Spring framework, hibernate
etc. Scala is quite similar to Cobra.

Prem

You might want to give it a shot again - perhaps that was true say 5
years ago, but that's no longer true. Ruby is not perfect, but can get
you really productive in a short time. The same philosophy extends to
Rails.

Both have embraced the fact that Ruby doesn't come with too many
batteries included - and that's why Rubyforge is such a big part of Ruby
development. Python was still getting it's eggs in order when installing
any library in Ruby was just a matter of doing "sudo gem install xyz".
Now, GitHub has become another hotbed of 3rd-party batteries.

Now, I agree that Ruby doesn't fit everybody's temperament - nor do I
recommend it for everybody (though I wish they did try it) - but it's
like sort of being on a thrill-ride. You will only like it if you like
the furious pace of change :). Today's sacred-cow-tools will be made
obsolete by next month's better-and-faster-than-thou tool. This is why
writing books for Ruby/Rails development is notoriously hard - the best
practices change by the time the book gets published (or a new release
with a ton of new features is ready).

If you thrive on learning everything at a fast pace, not get overly
religious about what you learnt so far and be ready to ditch it all and
start over again in a short time, Ruby might be just for you :).

Rails is neat, and IMO felt a lot more like an web app framework
than Django. Django felt more like it was better designed for creating
CMS than general web apps.

The one issue no one has discussed so far is ease and stability
of deployment on shared hosting provider setups -- not everyone
can justify a virtual private server.

My hosting provider (dreamhost.com) is a typical web host, and
it would be good to see web frameworks and applications working
nicely in such scenarios.

I would love to deploy more Rails apps at work, but Rails has a
huge problem running on dreamhost. It constantly crashes, pages
don't load randomly, performance is terrible, etc. After lots of
troubleshooting, I gave up trying to adopt Rails in my environment.

However, on the same setup php and python/fcgi run perfectly.

Consequently, I just setup a Drupal website for a school website
a few days ago and it could not have been any easier.

Ah yes, that is indeed a problem - though there are several hacks (like
freezing gems to your vendor directory) that can help, but I've never
tried it on dreamhost, so it might or might not work. But if I'm not
wrong, dreamhost did add some Rails support recently, you might want to
check on that.

If you want to try something entirely different, try Heroku. They have a
free plan, and it's perfect for getting started with Rails without the
hosting headaches. Or, if you're really adventurous, you could try it
with JRuby on AppEngine.

True, but it's not because they lack initiative. There are several
reports on the net from good sources that Microsoft is putting
tremendous pressure on Netbook manufacturers not to use Linux (apart
from giving heavy discounts on XP) because they're really scared the low
price point can become a entry point for Linux into consumer computing.

Acer recently announced a netbook based on Android OS and immediately
put it on the freezer, because of direct pressure from you-know-who. But
things might change - Chrome OS is directly targeted at devices like
netbooks, and there are a ton of hardware manufacturers are already in
their boat. So here's hoping.
