Re: [Ilugc] what is meant by cloud computing

2010-04-17 Thread Gourav Shah
check these links to know more about cloud computing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing
http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/
http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud

To simplify, its like utility service such as electricity. You use
electricity whenever and whatever quantity you need and pay for it at the
end of the month. With cloud computing one can demand for computing power
whenever and however much needed and pay per utilization unit.

This requires considerable amount of infrastructure to be set up at the
provider's side. At the user's end, its sheer convenience. Imagine you have
a startup with limited costs, no IT resources, you have to get started
immediately and get the product live etc. All you do is, go to a cloud
provider, demand for resources, start using it right away and pay per usage
unit. Its a win win for all.

Thanks
Gourav

Cloud computing is nothing but technology that have all computing power in
the Internet. For e.g., right now, when you use email, you already use the
cloud. However, in cloud computing case, even your operating system will
boot from cloud. You will only have a dumb terminal in front of you with no
 capabilities.

The future is what Pano Technologies have introduced.
 http://www.panologic.com/
 http://www.panologic.com/

A true virtualised desktop with no computing power. This is what cloud is
all about. And when the company needs more processing/computing power, they
just buy it from the cloud services provider, instead of buying it on their
own. Imagine the hardware/maintenance cost savings if this model is
 implemented.

The only true major hurdle with this type of implementation is the security
 of the cloud.

 Hope this helps :-)

I don't think you can disable sound on your host OS (running
natively on the computer hardware) and expect to get sound out of the
guest OS in VirtualBox.

[Ilugc] Compiling Marble

2010-04-17 Thread siddharth srivastava
Hi

I am trying to compile KDE Marble from source.
I wanted both Qt and kde version on my system.
How can I accomplish this ?

I did the following:

I needed to change the default installation locationi.e. /usr/local
(otherwise both installation will overwrite each other)
I used cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX= /usr/exportqt ../marble
(exportqt is the directory where I want the Qt version to be installed)
Any other way ?

after this I used make install
Then, I set the environment as export
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/exportqt/bin/marble
(marble is the name of the executable)

Any other alternative to set environment ?

But when I invoke marble from the shell, it says marble not installed. On
clicking the marble gadget icon from the applications directory it says
marble executable not found.

How can I overcome this problem ?

Thanks

[Ilugc] CLI implementation of the fd.o trash spec?

2010-04-17 Thread Roshan George
Hey, everyone,

This is a bit of a silly question, but does anyone know if there is a
simple command-line application which will trash files as per the
freedesktop.org spec? http://www.ramendik.ru/docs/trashspec.html

I know, I know, I should write it myself, but if it's just an `aptitude
install` away, why not use that?

Re: [Ilugc] Help Needed

2010-04-17 Thread Kishore Reddy
What I understand from VirtualBox is, it uses the host operating system to
run the guest operating system. No sound in host = no sound in guest.

For example: Internet/LAN usage in guest OS. If you see the LAN ip address
of the guest, and if you see the actual ip of the packets(genrated from your
guest OS) that are going out of your system, it contains the ip that your
host OS has obtained. There is NAT running in the background to translate
the ip addresses. I hope you understand.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

what is that sun virtual box can do ?

VirtualBox simulates a PC (processor and peripherals). The simulation is so
complete that any general-purpose operating system can be run within the
simulated system, without modifications. The operating system running within
VirtualBox is called the guest. VirtualBox achieves speed by trying to execute
the guest instructions natively on the host processor (instead of simulating
them in software), as much as possible.
