Re: [Ilugc] License of Text books of Tamil Nadu School Books

2014-04-22 Thread Arun Prakash
Hello,

The books are only in PDF format and copyrighted by TamilNadu Government,

It will be nice to release them in Creative Commons license or Public
Domain License, with the source documents.

With the source documents we can create epub.mobi and other formats
 for reading in mobiles/tablets/ebook readers.

 I wrote to
 schsec AT tn.gov.in, mdtntbc07 AT dataone.in, booksonline AT nic.in

 regarding this.

Do you know whom to contact for this and request processes?

I don't think so, talking to a single person will do this. It should be
raised in assembly and has to be accepted. Last TN assembly i think had a
word about free software, but nothing happened. You can also see the word
open source and open standards in political manifesto of major political
parties.

I dont think doing commons licensing is possible now. It needs a bill to be
passed[1].

Still you can improve the quality of the translation. There are
translations which is translated word by word.
Usually when we do quality check in real time projects, we check whether
the meaning is conveyed right or not ?
Try to do translation based on the meaning and dont try to replicate the
sense. Before translation go through other pages/programs which is
previously translated.

Hi all -
We are excited to announce that tomorrow, Wednesday, November is the 7th
birthday of Firefox! To celebrate, we are bringing back Firefox Live, the
24 hour live stream of baby red pandas (aka fireboxes) at the Knoxville Zoo
in Kentucky.

We are going to do press outreach in the US and our European markets
(Germany, France, Italy, Poland, UK and Spain) when the announcement is
live.

If you have press contacts, feel free to send them the pitch when the news
is live - otherwise this is just an FYI.

Celebrating 7 years of Firefox with the newest (and cutest) Mozillians!

Today, we are excited to join together as a global community to celebrate
the 7th birthday of Firefox. As the only independent browser with a
mission to make the Web better, we are proud of how the last seven years of
Firefox have pushed the Web forward:

   - The latest release of
Firefoxhttp://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2011/11/08/mozilla-firefox-adds-twitter-search-and-new-features-that-make-web-browsing-easier/
is
more than 32 times faster than Firefox 1.0.
   - We recently shifted to a new release
cyclehttp://blog.lizardwrangler.com/2011/08/25/rapid-release-process/
to
deliver features, performance enhancements, security updates and stability
   improvements to users faster.
   - Leading edge HTML5 support in Firefox ensures that developers can
create beautiful and exciting Web experiences for users.
   - Favorite features like tabbed browsing, built-in phishing and malware
protection, the Awesome Bar, Do Not Track and our gallery of thousands of
Firefox add-ons give millions of users around the world more choice and
control over their Web browsing experience.

To celebrate, Mozilla has once
againhttp://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2011/04/12/firefox-live-trekking-with-pandas-and-new-adventures-for-spark-and-ember/
adopted
firefox (a.k.a red panda) cubs at the Knoxville Zoo. For the next few
months, you can watch these baby firefoxes play, live and grow via a 24
hour live video stream at Firefox Live http://www.mozilla.org/firefoxlive.
Please help spread the word by sharing the cuteness of our newest
Mozillians at Firefox Live http://www.mozilla.org/firefoxlive.

*Pitch: *

Happy Birthday, Firefox!

Firefox, the only independent browser, has come a long way since Mozilla
released Firefox 1.0 seven years ago. Earlier this week, we proudly
released Firefox 8, the latest update to the Firefox browser.
Firefox continues to drive and advance the Web with the key Mozilla values
of openness, transparency and interoperability.

In honor of Firefox's seventh birthday today, Mozilla has announced
the adoption of three new red pandas from Knoxville Zoo. Mozilla would
like to welcome Burnadette, Dolly and Winston to the Firefox family!
Mozilla is officially re-open its Firefox Live project for
constant cub-watching starting today. This time, however, Firefox Live
will include ways for users to engage with the cubs and share all the
things they love about Burnadette, Dolly and Winston with their friends.

I invite you to take a moment and visit our cubs!

I take a look at the beta . It is fine and happy to have the final one.
 When is Fedora 15 coming?

It is coming only by 24 May [1]
Is it possible to celebrate both the release parties in the
coming monthly meet on May 14?
We must schedule a later date as fedora releases only by 24 May.

Both Fedora and Ubuntu releases its Gnome3 version , so with my view
the appearance of both is merely the same.
Also regarding the features , it is more or less same other than packages.
Since Ubuntu stopped shipping free CD.
So this version of Ubuntu can determine the original users , rather
than people looking for Free CD.

Re: [Ilugc] too much policing?

2011-04-27 Thread Arun Prakash
Hello,
As per your statement there are lot of 'policing' mails these days. Why then
are people still flouting list rules? If they are not reading and following
the guidelines even after repeated mails then being told to do so is a small
price they have to pay. In fact they should be happy that repeat offenders
are not blocked for not taking time to follow rules and there by wasting
 everybody else's time.

Reminding the rules is a good thing to do . While people do repeated
mistakes , better send reminder offlist with cc to list admin. While
repeated mistakes are done , ban them.

Discussing this in list , ruins the time.

Arun Prakash

Re: [Ilugc] too much policing?

2011-04-27 Thread Arun Prakash
Hello,
When people repeat their mistakes again and again despite the
constant, irritating reminders it means that they aren't bothered
about the reminder to actually try to learn/understand what is being
said and why it is said.
You are right
People are putting additional effort to
educate the ignorant members and if the offenders can't have the basic
courtesy to get enlightened, then they will have to put up with
repeated reminders to their repeated mistakes imho. And as for as the
OP's email, I would say that 'policing' is an extremely harsh and
unfair word to use for people trying to remind/enlighten the ignorant
about the guidelines; 'reminder' could have been a better and a
 neutral word.

You are right. I feel that people who uses the mail less frequent do not
read all the mails . So they make mistakes. Since most people are using
gmail, priority inbox do not give importance for replies , when the main
content is unread.

So people using less frequent do not actually read messages , when the
topic is not interested. So we must do some alternative to insist ethics
, like specifying mistake tag in subject line or like.

When we really want ethics , we must remind them in some other means.

Re: [Ilugc] too much policing?

2011-04-27 Thread Arun Prakash
Hello,
One option would be to send personal mails to the person explaining in
detail. But when someone is using priority inbox which has its own
super-secret algorithm, how can one be sure that the email will be
read? That is why we remind people in the same thread so that there is
a better chance of people reading it, assuming that in the real world
people would want to read replies in the threads that they have
 started/participated in.
Only participant know what error he has committed.
So in-thread reminders, monthly reminders and
listing the guidelines in the welcome mail are the best options imho
as of now. If you have better, feasible ways to do this and get better
results, do let us know. Till then, I don't think repeated efforts to
educate the ignorant members of the list will have to continue.

This is already done and going on quiet well, we can also insist in
welcome email.

This is not about the priority inbox, rather than people who committed
the mistakes knows the error, tagging can help know the people who is
not in the discussion.

Re: [Ilugc] too much policing?

2011-04-27 Thread Arun Prakash
Hello,
When the same person (as described above), forgets to follow the
rules, we just jump on him/her and scare him/her from asking
questions. Or otherwise, we just irritate them. This IMHO, is not a
good idea. The best option would be to leave that policing (for
want of a better word), to the person who is genuinely trying to
 answer the question.

Welcomed thought.

2011-04-23 Thread Arun Prakash
Hello,

 1. After installing it with CD/DVD, most of packages available for it can
be installed from same or another CD/DVD. High speed Internet connection
should not be required for installing default packages available for it.

Try local repository.
 2. It should not be much resource consuming. Should work on an old system
such as P-IV with low amount of RAM such as 512MB.

 3. Latest version of LAMP related packages should be available on it.

 4. It should support Tata Indicom Photon Plus connection.

I think this is available on all major distros.
 5. Codes of common audio and video format should be available on it by
 default.
 6. Upgradation process of it should be easy with the CD/DVD of current
 version.

I hope *Debian* is the right version for you.

Could any body help me to solve the issue ?

Why are going by this way ? BSNL teracom modem comes with default support for

If you could not get this file . You browse for ZTE modem driver , and install
it for Fedora . Now when you plug in your BSNL modem it would detect the device

installed it may default configuration for BSNL , but change the access point

This worked for me . Give it a try.

Its nice to be part of a democratic country, please stop drowning the people
with the options, we don't know what to pick and what to leave. Which group
to join and which to subscribe. If the same situation prolongs people would
not know which party to support since too many regional parties. Same thing
could happen to the lug groups too. I hope we have enough groups, I am sure
our inbox are flooded with the e-mails not sure whether we another group to
promote the F/OSS. Why cant you do the same joining in hand with the
 existing groups.

Starting new Political party and LUG group with a fancy name seems to be
 today's trend lol
