There are many commercial plugins available to achieve this, majority of
which are for windows, and ofcourse they come with pricetags attached
to them.

One simple way I would sugest, and which I have used, is to use audacity
to record the skype conversations. The results have not been greatest,
but it can get you working. You might want to do some tweaking to get
better results. Install audacity, start skype calls, and start push the
record button, thats all to it to get started with recording calls.

Re: [Ilugc] What is Special with Ubuntu Studio

2008-05-09 Thread Gourav Shah

UbuntuStudio is targeted for multimedia users and IIRC it has a low
latency kernel. Xubuntu comes with XFce as the default desktop. Never
heard of Goubuntu distro. From the site, it looks more like a team to
help the Ubuntu effort.

to be precise, gobuntu includes truely free software. It would not
include anything that does not fully comply with four freedoms viz.
use, study, modify, and redistribute. The list of components that it
would not include goes from firmwares, drivers to restricted/non free
applications. Its a free software distribution , and good for the folks
who want to build products on free software stack and don't want to
worry about someone raising with any licensing issues in future.

Re: [Ilugc] [OT] Old Computers, Rs. 14 /- per k.g.

2008-05-23 Thread Gourav Shah

There is really no market for these kind of comps. I have several such
comps. gathering dust. The best one can do is salvage the working HDDs
for reuse but then again given their age they could fail any time. I
use them on experimental machines only.

If you have any such throw away machine which atleast powers on, and are
in chennai, do let me know.
I would pick it up form you. I want a couple of old machines to research
on and build and appliance out of it.

LTSP + Edubuntu is an excellent combination for educational institutes
in rural as well as urban areas all together imho.
As most of you are already aware, it uses simple and highly efficient
technology to provide effective and feasible alternative to using high
end fat clients as desktops with proprietory os.

These days I am working with a silicon valley based NGO to set up a
computer lab for an orphanage in karaikal, a costal town in tamil nadu.
Our intent is to use computers in a school setup so as to make existing
learning more effective. And we believe that we could use a simple
technology to make big difference in people's lives.

I have a setup almost ready with one amd opteron dual core server and
8 diskless and light generic clients with accessories such as
projector, printer/scanner, speakers etc. Edubuntu comes loaded with
LTSP, which makes setup mostly automated and has a number of educational
softwares and interesting games. We are right now working on setting
up few add ons and customizing client desktops.

I would be happy to showcase it at Rural India Conference. I could spare
a weekend for the conference, but will not be able to visit the place
before that due to my other engagements. If I get some help from a
few enthusiastic volunteers /college students, who are willing to come
and work at my office I could work on customizing it in Tamil and make
it rock. If any of you want to have a look at the setup and provide
suggestions/feedbacks/help, feel free to stop by at my TTK road office.

Re: [Ilugc] network driver

2008-08-10 Thread Gourav Shah

The above laptop is loaded with dual OS having Win XP/ RHEL Server Edition 5.2
with kernel 2.6.18.92.el5 x86_64 GNU/LINUX which is
RHEL Server release 5.2 (Tikanga)
The issue is that the network connectivity of both Wired and Wireless are
functioning perfectly for Win XP without any issue whilst the same is not well
with Linux .
The available NIC drivers for RHEL are as follows
Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express

Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit controller
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 XBG Network Connection

could yo upaste the output of "lspci" command here? I might be able to
help you if I know which cards you have exactly.

As per I understand, you need to load the kernel modules for both wired
and wireless network cards, which have not been loaded already. You could
do so using modprobe and ndiswrapper for wireless card.

If you have intel pro wireless 3945, its supported with ndiswrapper, which
is listed on this page

http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/index.php?/component/option,com_openwiki/Itemid,33/id,list_g-l/

here is the wiki for ndiswrapper + wireless card module installation
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/index.php?/component/option,com_openwiki/Itemid,33/id,installation/

Once you get the modules loaded correctly, you should have your hardware
working with RHEL.

[Ilugc] Karalikal Orphanage LTSP Lab Setup, Call for Volunteers For Educating Teachers

2008-10-15 Thread Gourav Shah
Many of you who attended the ILUGC meet On saturday have background on
this.
For rest here is a brief info,

I am working with a valley based NGO called Home of Hope to setup a
computer lab
for the orphange set up in the tsunami affected coastal town of Karaikal.

For more information on home of hope, and their projects, following are
the links

Home of Hope: http://www.hohinc.org
Karaikal Project: http://www.hohinc.org/projects/kariakal.html /
http://hohlab.org/
HOH Featured on NBC : * *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6T8YmxPOcE
Moving Pictures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKk4WPV6s0M

We are using Edubuntu + LTSP setup with one server and 8/16 client
machines.
The setup is almost ready, customized in tamil, and most of the
machines have already been shipped to karaikal.
I am personally visiting the orphanage this weekend to finish the
setup. I could probably be
able to make arrangements for a couple more people if there is enough
interest.

Now, as we discussed in the meet, we need a few volunteers to educate
the teachers there
on using edubuntu and the packages that come with it. Eventhough, most
of the software are self explanatory,
I feel there is still a need to atleast educate them on which ones are
used for what purposes.
We could design a syllabus as well if we have enough human resources.

I would appreciate, if you could reply back with your interest to
volunteer and we could take it further from there.

Thanks
gourav

Re: [Ilugc] Students Project - suggestions

2008-10-15 Thread Gourav Shah
I had a talk with folks back at my organization, and we do have a few
interesting projects that we want to work on, but don't have enough
time due to our other engagements. I have put togather a list of those
projects as well as few personal hobby projects, that we would love to
see taken up by students and getting it done. The students will get to
learn on few of the interesting and practical technologies. We might be
able to have them intern at Efficient Frontier(www.efrontier.com)
subject to our availibilty to mentor them.

This list is in order of priority that we want to get done,

*1. Build a complete conferencing system:*
Build a solution to provide a complete voice and video conferencing
system based on free/open source software. Build dedicated appliance
based on Asterisk/Freeswitch/Skype to provide a VoIP solution to
interconnect multiple offices of a organization spread across the world .

Topics Touched : Operating Systems, Telecom, Networking,
Scripting/Programming, VoIP

*2. Design and deploy Server Automation and Virtualization Solution *
Compare various virtualization technologies such as openVZ, kvm, xen,
virtualbox; identify the most suitable for server virtualization and
provide a solution to setup, automate, manage server virtualization.

Topics Touched: Operating System Internals, Networking, Virtualization
Techniques

*3. Framework for Online Testing*
My organization uses a barebone online testing framework as part of the
recruitment process which is built on Google Apps, Python etc. This has
helped us to carry out hiring in a much efficient manner than earlier
times. We need someone one to take this framework and build a very
intelligent and complete solution with enhancements such as computer
adaptive tests, streamlined UI etc.

Topics Touched: Python, Google App Engine/ BigTables(google's Db),
Algorithms

*4. Build a Custom Distribution based on OpenSuse:* This is the
requirement for my organization. We have standerdized on opensuse and
build our own distro on top of opensuse. We want to manage our own
distro more effectively and innovatively and also customize, trim,
optimize host opensuse os according to our needs for both desktops and
servers.

Topics Touched: Operating Systems, Kernel Compilation, Optimization,
Package Maintainance etc.

In addition to these, here are a few personal hobby projects,

*1. PVR/Home Entertainment/HTPC Appliance*: Design and develope a
commercially viable appliance based on linux/embedded linux to work as
a PVR(Personal Video Recorder) and home media/entertainment server. It
could work as a one stop solution to all home entertainment needs. Do
additional things such as customizing mythtv to make it manage with set
top boxes available in India, add channel guides, manage
bigflix/seventymm queues etc.

Topics Touched : Operating Systems, Networks, Scripting/Programming,
Embedded Systems, Multimedia Systems

*2. Enhance mobile appl smb4s60 * - smb4s60 is a mobile smb client
written in python . Currently works in Nokia s60 phone and enables
browsing network shares over the wireless network. Written by Premnath
Sah ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Homepage: http://www.lnkr.net/smb4s60

One can take this as a base and add more functionalities, add support
for wide number of cell phones and handheld devices etc.

Topics Covered:
Python, Nokia S60 platform, SMB/CIFS, Authentication, Networking.

*3. LTSP Benchmarking:* There are no solid benchmarks available on
which to base decisions as to what hardware to use to deploy a LTSP
setup, how to scale it up etc. This project will involve setting up
LTSP with different hardware and testing it running various sets of
applications, monitoring server and collecting performance data, put
the stats in a database, and come up with benchmarks.

Topics Touched : Operating Systems, Networking, Performance Testing,
Scripting/Programming, Database

We could spec out the projects if students would like to take it up.

Thanks

I am assuming you could use grep here, if not, please specify how you intend
to do the pattern matching.

grep has a option to invert match, here is a snip from manpage,
...

   -v, --invert-match
Invert the sense of matching, to select non-matching lines.
(-v is specified by POSIX.)

so if its grep, you could use, grep "^2009/"

Exactly. Solr is a very powerful open source indexer around. Its a
subproject of Apache Lucene and uses lucene libraries for indexing. Well
supported by the community. You could use Tika content extraction framework
to index not only html but also a lot of other rich text documents such as
doc, ppt, xls, rtf, pdf , even tar.gz, bzip, zip formats.

Initcron Labs has designed a appliance for solr by name Blaze. Check it
out at http://www.initcron.org/blaze .

There is also another lucene based project called Nutch which provided web
specific features such as crawler, html parser, link graph database etc. You
can also integrate solr and nutch to build a solution.

Here are a few useful links

Agreed there is a learning curve here. However you wont need to go into
lucene/solr internals in order to implement it. All you have to do is
install it and then use which ever is your favorite language to submit
documents to solr, which uses REST API (get/post) and returns output as XML.
I had successfully implemented solr solution not going into java internals
and using pycurl. There are python extensions available for solr/lucene.
A couple of them are

As Girish and Rajgopal suggested, FreeBSD is the ideal solution for you. I
suggest you use pfsense http://www.pfsense.org/ which will give you a easy
to use web interface to configure all this. Ideally, use a dedicated box
with CF card running pfsense. You could get a Soekris Embedded box (
http://www.soekris.com/index.htm) and install pfsense/freebsd on it. Very
solid solution. We have been using this type of solution for years without
almost no issues.

Zimbra uses Apache Lucene library for indexing and search. However, the
community edition comes with very limited search options. They have more
sophisticated search options such as full text search, attachment search
etc in their Network Edition which you have to pay for. Thats one of the
features with which they differentiate their paid products from community
version.

One of the options is to setup a Apache Solr based full text indexing and
search server for Zimbra and feed your emails with Sor Data Import handler.

Re: [Ilugc] More Soekris questions

One way to install BSD on your CF card is to plug it into a usb card reader
attached to your PC and install directly onto the CF.

You could get a CF card in chennai at Richie Street where the computer
wholesale market is. However you may not get 256mb one. I was looking for
512m and the minimum I could get was 2GB.

2gb card that I have works with my soekris net5501. I am assuming it would
work on your 4801 board as well. If you are unsure, and want to try it out
before you buy it, you could come to my office and try it out. Contact me
off the list if you want to visit.

Will Soekris Net4801 work with 256 MB CF, i use 64 MB now.

make sure you check system logs, /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog etc.
to find the clues. Also you might want to enable sar/atsar which gives
you a report on the resource usage every 10 mins interval or so, which
could help you to narrow down if its because of server running out of

Opensuse 10 reached end of life long time ago. so is 10.1, 10.2 and now 10.3
since a few days ago. This means, for any versions earlier than 11, you will
not be able to install packages using Yast from the official repositories.
The latest version of opensuse is 11.2. I suggest you to use more recent
version of opensuse (11 or later). If this is not feasible for you, do
consider installing package from source.

if you do not have spaces before text in the file, you might as well use

Can you provide some more clarification on whether
1. you wish the MP3 player to support running Linux OS on it, or
2. you just want to sync/connect the mp3 player to the computer running
linux?

- If its the first option, look at http://www.linuxfordevices.com/
- for the later, check out http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9266 ,
http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html (ipods). you may have more apps which can
sync with/manage your devices.

1. Be passionate about your interests. If you are not, find something which
you are really really interested in. You need to love what you do, and if
you already do that, money, fame, jobs , increments will follow. Your
passion will show up to your prospective employer while they interview you
and also later with your deliverables . This not only applies for if you
want to be a Linux Professional, but in general.

2. If you CHOOSE to be a Linux Professional based on your interests and
passion, welcome to the great and open world of opportunities and land of
self learning and collaboration. Start reading documents, get the books
which give you introduction and insight on the technologies you are
interested in. There is wide range of resources freely available.

3. Play around with your system. Try installing various distros, learning
tools, utilities, applications, doing cool things with your system. GPL'ed
software gives you the power to use it, learn it, play around with it,
modify however you want and also share the cool stuff with your friends.

4. And here is the best part. FOSS is all about collaboration. Choose a open
source project of your interest, start learning about it, test it and start
contributing if you like. There is no one who will stop you from doing it,
and you dont need to be in a job to do this. You will get to interact with
the people from all over the world who have years of experience and
expertise on the technologies of your interest. You would benefit
tremendously and improve on your technical skill just hanging around with
the experts. Also you'll get to see how different people approach the same
problem, different styles of working, coding styles etc. You can pick and
choose whatever you like and evolve as you go.

5. Be on the mailing lists, irc channels, attend events, interact with
people. Get visibility while you do so. One's who are contributing well, and
are smart enough get recommended and do not even need to do certifications
etc.

If you do all this, I can personally guarantee you that you will end up with
good work and also enough money. You may also get lucky and find a mentor
who could personally guide you in the right direction.

I clearly see two groups here, one is the experienced professionals, most of
whom are recruiters as well, who have interviewed the certified
professionals and are really unhappy with the quality and have lost the
trust on the certifications. Second group is the freshers who think if
they do certifications , they have better chance at getting jobs.

In crux, for the second group, Certifications may give you better chances of
landing up with a job as a fresher than not having one. But that will
happen only if you have passion for your work, and have taken efforts to
learn things on your own while doing the certifications and if you are
thorough with it. If you believe you will mug for a few days, pass the
certification exams successfully , and suddenly will be preferred for a job,
think again. Certification or no certification, your knowledge, passion and
soft skills is what will get you a job. This is what your prospective
employers will look in you. My personal advise is, if you choose to do a
certification, its a good thing, but you should spend time and efforts
learning what you will. Its the journey that will matter not the destination
alone.

I have tried this modem on ubuntu 9.10, and it works out of the box. Was

Re: [Ilugc] what is meant by cloud computing

2010-04-17 Thread Gourav Shah
check these links to know more about cloud computing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing
http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/
http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud

To simplify, its like utility service such as electricity. You use
electricity whenever and whatever quantity you need and pay for it at the
end of the month. With cloud computing one can demand for computing power
whenever and however much needed and pay per utilization unit.

This requires considerable amount of infrastructure to be set up at the
provider's side. At the user's end, its sheer convenience. Imagine you have
a startup with limited costs, no IT resources, you have to get started
immediately and get the product live etc. All you do is, go to a cloud
provider, demand for resources, start using it right away and pay per usage
unit. Its a win win for all.

I have used both, Puppet and Opscode Chef, for over two years now to
automate complex clustered setups. I started with Puppet, and then moved to
Chef, and never looked back. Puppet uses declarative language, which is
easier to learn for beginners, however in comparison to Chef has multitude
of useful features which make it more attractive. It has many advantages
over Puppet, offers more features such as attributes overriding,
environments, data bags, solr search, knife client, support for
bootstrapping on cloud as well as bare metal. From my experience chef is
more stable and has predictable behavior which helps in debugging. So my
advise to you is, if you are starting with Configuration Management System,
start with Opscode Chef. Its a little more complex than Puppet is to
learn, but take my words, you wont regret going that way.

Here is one the example works I could achieve with Chef. This is using
bash script with Chef cookbooks. I have setup a mechanism to bootstrap a
Big Data cluster on ec2 with multitude of inter-dependent services such
as Apache Zookeeper, Hadoop, Hbase, Kafka, Apache Pig, Hive, Apache Solr
Cloud integrated and configured to talk to each other.

The end product is a script which takes arguments in the form of number of
instances of each type to be launched. Script uses ec2 api calls and Chef's
bootstrap mechanism and a few api calls to,

1. Launch ec2 Instances
2. Bootstrap Chef (Install and configure chef client)
3. Configure services as per roles (e.g. zookeeper, hadoop namende, hbase
master, hadoop slave, solr etc. )
4. Configure each service to find other services and manage dependencies.
E.g. Hadoop needs to know where to find zookeeper, and has its IP address
configured in its configurations.
5. Override config parameters to customize setup.

All you need to do is run the bash script with a few arguments, and after a
few minutes, you have your big data cluster setup and configured,
magically...

Here are a few useful links you could refer to,

Ideally, you could use AWS/EC2 platform to host such infrastructure which
could scale up/down as required , throw it away when done and just pay for
what you use.

Few inputs:
- AWS offers Elastic Load Balancer which is massively scalable.
- You could split your application into Apache | NFS \ Backend DB and scale
each part individually.
- Use In memory cache such as memcache for db, varnish for http cache.
This will reduce the load on the backend servers a lot.
- Use Autoscaling to scale up and down as your traffic changes
- Use spot instances for web servers with autoscaling. You will end up
doing considerable cost savings.

I have not setup scalable infrastructure for moodle in specific, but have
done it for multitude of other LAMP stacks such as magento, drupal, custom
php apps and so on. Each has its own specific challenges, but underlyting
architecture remain same.

Is DD-WRT supported on any of the routers available in the India market? I
am looking for integrating DD-WRT with Coovachilly + Radius server. I have
a old Linksys WRT54G, however not sure which one amongst current routers
support DD-WRT.
