The problem arises when we start assuming things. The original email is
addressed to Mr. Baskar in his Linuxpert Systems mailing list; not the ilugc
mailing list. So when Baskar asks for help, one would normally assume he wants
help to conduct on behalf of LinuxPert Systems only, not this list. There is
nothing wrong in doing this, but clarity was missing.

Now, in Baskar's reply he says ...cannot be handled by me or by my
company,...If anyone does, it will be 'on behalf of ILUG-C' only.

See? Our assumption was wrong. Why this restriction for anybody else to conduct
only on behalf of ilugc? On what basis is Baskar placing this restriction on
others in this list?

Re: [Ilugc] Request for seminar on 'Free tools in Software Engineering'

2013-09-19 Thread Sundaram KR

Dear Fellow Luggies; I can sense many people will feel I am the reason for
Baskar unsubscribing from this list. So far in this thread I asked a direct
question and got vague replies. Now that this reply from Baskar has been
posted, I want to clarify. 3 months back, Baskar asked me if I could help him
in a 2-day workshop. I agreed, and in my slides, I displayed my company logo to
which Baskar objected, and said only his company logo should be displayed. I
then removed my company logo for the rest of the workshop, and politely
declined to involve in any further of his requests to help.

So in this thread when Baskar asked for help, again I asked for clarity; and
after 3 emails, it has emerged Baskar cannot do the program with his company;
but he is still insisting others to do only on behalf of ilugc, whatever that
means.

The aim of ilugc is to spread the knowledge, awareness and use of FOSS. I will
do this to the best of my ability, and largely I will be charging some money
for these activities. I do not feel guilty about it, since Free in FOSS stands
for Freedom, not Gratis. Instead of arguing, I am going to post about the
potential, skills available; projects needed, opportunities etc. revolving
around FOSS. If needed, I will put [Commercial] tag to all such posts to
satisfy the pedants. The growth of FOSS is more important than petty arguments
in a mailing list.

[Ilugc] Should FOSS discourage Intel and embrace ARM?

2013-09-19 Thread Sundaram KR

In this post, I want to outline my thoughts regarding Intel processors ; and
why the FOSS community ought to distance itself from Intel and move towards ARM
processors.

In my view, FOSS is more a philosophy, and a way of life, and applies to many
other aspects than mere software. Since Intel is part of the Trusted Computing
Group which governs the specification of the TCPA; I think it is safe to
assume that Intel has implemented TCPA in all their recent product lines, such
as Haswell an Atom.

ARM Holdings licenses the technology to several dozens of manufacturers;
leading to the tremendous innovations we have seen in mobile devices, SoCs;
SBCs such as Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone; which are unheard of in the Intel or
x86 world.

When Linus Torvalds was approached for introducing changes in the kernel to
parse binaries as part of secure boot process, he reacted violently, and in a
series of mailing list postings; lucidly explained the true meaning of
'security' and 'trust'.

A college in Coimbatore has implemented Linux in about 650 out of 700 PCs. But
still they are all Intel PCs. Now that the Raspberry Pi is a fairly decent PC
capable of running 'Linux'; it's only drawback is slow GUI performance. I have
searched in vain for readily available low cost ARM PCs or Server systems,
capable of running Linux (not Android). If any one has any links to share, it
would be useful to the community.

There have been cases where groups, and conferences (in India) have been
hijacked for personal or commercial interests.

I have not seen anybody hijacking this list for personal interests which are
not based around Free Software. If anybody tries to do that on this list, we
can simply ban them. But banning any post on a FOSS activity such as workshop;
just because it is commercial does not make sense to me.

But, this list is quite considerate to allow people to post with a
'Commercial' tag. Otherwise, it wouldn't have survived this long So, how
one balances the number of voluntary and commercial posts is crucial, just as
 maintaining the signal-to-noise ratio.

Very true. Which is why I suggested a FOSS-AD tag, and limiting such tagged
posts to 5 per month.

Totally banning such FOSS-related posts entirely is not a good idea, IMHO.

Re: [Ilugc] Apologies for posting FDP/Workshop event mails in ILUG-C

2013-09-16 Thread Sundaram KR

I want to make several points on this topic:

1. The Free in FOSS stands for Freedom or Sudhandhiram; not Free as in Gratis
or Ilavasam. As long as any of the 3000 members of this list post their
thoughts, and those postings are related to Freedom providing software; I or
nobody should have any objection. I argued this point with the late Kenneth
Gonsalvez; and he suggested to put a Commercial tag; which in my opinion is
redundant and nonsensical.

2. The Linux kernel is jointly developed by entities such as RedHat, IBM etc.
all of which are commercial public companies, that exist to provide gains to
shareholders. The employees from the companies routinely post on the Linux
Kernel mailing list. They do not add [Commercial] tag to each and every post. I
don't see why our Linux User Group mailing list should be any different.

3. The fact that Baskar is a long-time member of this list is not relevant to
this discussion; the fact that he is talking about Freedom providing software
is the only relevant point.

4 All postings in this list should serve a purpose to be relevant; sending
reports of workshops 10 times a month, serves no useful purpose in my opinion.
Rather, it can be posted that a workshop was conducted on so and so topic; and
so and so were the agenda and activities therein. If somebody can conduct
workshop on some relevant topics; they can post their capability even if they
do or do not conduct workshops. Provided that this is done on occasion; this
need not be construed as advertising. Evangelism is also advertising, and
advertising skills on Freedom Software; even at a price; should be acceptable
and encouraged on this list. The thread on a Facebook page for this list is
also to advertise the existence of this list and its members; so advertising
FOSS capabilities on this list is not evil.

5. If required, we can insist on Ad tag for such threads; and have a policy
restricting the number of Ad posts to say 5 or 10 per month. In my opinion the
Ad tag is not required; but if some people strongly feel; it can be insisted.
There is no shame on posting Ads; in fact; only because of the postings I came
to know of some people and their skills.

Re: [Ilugc] [Job] Wanted - Rails experts

2013-02-25 Thread Sundaram KR
has said that it will pay 8 thousand per month and in addition of 2 year BOND.
This happened about couple of

years back.

Yes. But there was no intention or attempt to deceive. It was the truth.

The candidate you sent ran away when asked to write a simple report using Ruby
on Rails.

So before pointing fingers at others on a mailing list, think about yourself
and the quality of the students you produce. If you have any grievance, send
email to concrened person directly, instead of making a fool of yourself on the
list.

Re: [Ilugc] [Job] Wanted - Rails experts

2013-02-25 Thread Sundaram KR
The candidate whom I was talking about is completed his 1 year at a company
with 16 thousand per month, with 3 increments.

Good to hear. But he was useless when he met me 2 years back.

IMO it is better to say NO to the person than throwing a peanut offer,.

I make an offer. The person can say NO, if he feels it is peanuts. I have got 2
better candidates who started at 8K and earning 22K and 26K now after 2 years.

I have great respects for my students and they are good, needless to prove
them in this floor.

But your student did not prove himself in my interview. That is important, not
this mailing list.

2 year with 8 thousand each month (for 24 months , with out increment) is not
a offer which is worth to discuss.

Okay, don't discuss. No compulsion from anybody if you want to keep quiet.

No need to lecture about Corporate Social Responsibility for a fresher in a
recession market. You must understand how difficult it is to be an employer in
today's market, no point thinking only from employee point of view.

Thyagarajan, you claim to be a trainer, and you are a senior and longtime
member of this list; yet you cannot understand that this mailing list is not
the relevant place to share your experiences. Not only that, you have mentioned
a very specific experience with a specific company as well. Not only
irrelevant, but highly indecent of you, and even now you fail to understand or
even apologise, or move on in silence.

-

So now I will share my unfortunate experience of interviewing one of your
trainees. I asked him to write a simple report to demonstrate the coding skills
he claimed in the resume. Your trainee ran away.

I hope this experience is useful to anyone in this mailing list - before
recruiting, please check the skills mentioned in the resume. Do not believe
whatever is written.

Thanks

Re: [Ilugc] Linux

2013-01-10 Thread Sundaram KR

Here goes a small para on Linux;
(a) Linux is an ' Operating System' (OS) that is non-propreitary and falls
under the Open Source category(OSS).

Corrections: Linux is a kernel. GNU is the operating system. GNU/Linux is an
operating system.

It falls under the Free software category, additionally it is also Open Source.

This has spawned a variety of versions

Corrections : Distributions is a better word to use than Versions.

(c) It was originall y conceptualised by Mr Linus Travos

Corrections: Written, and continues to be maintained, instead of just
conceptualised.

Torvalds is correct, not Travos.

Re: [Ilugc] [OT] Best first language

2012-10-23 Thread Sundaram KR
Any better choices? A language which will
be a foundation for her to explore and make better choices later and

a language which is not imposing and is fun?

For my son who is in ICSE school, they taught him Scratch and Alice when he was
7. Both these 'free' software packages are very good first languages for kids -
they are fun, easy to learn and very powerful programming concepts can be
taught.

After 8 to 9 years, I have started with BASIC and he is fascinated by what he
can do with that. Although many people say Python is better than BASIC I am not
convinced. Indentation is not for kids. Simple GOTO constructs are far more
powerful for learning.

YMMV

Re: [Ilugc] Low cost Linux tablet

2012-10-15 Thread Sundaram KR
So, can I summarise like this:

1. There are no low cost tablets pre-loaded with Linux.

2. 'Some' Android tablets can be tinkered with and one can load Linux on them -
Ex: Archos tablets. But these are expensive, so it does not answer the original
question.
-

In which case, let me rephrase the question:

3. I see Zync, Wespro and other companies giving away low cost Android tablets
with 10 display at Rs. 7,000/- to Rs. 8,000/-

Can anyone help me load Linux on these devices, so that I can connect a
keyboard and mouse and use it as a low cost laptop?

Hospital Management Software Maintained by Software Vendor ? is it running
 on ubuntu setup?

is this open source software? if so, please let us know which one.

Actually, I spoke to the doctor this afternoon and asked the same question.
The software itself is based on java I believe, but it is now completely
deployed on servers and clients running open source operating systems. The
source code is however been provided, but under NDA, so it is not open source.
