 discuss how the pickling protocols (0,1,2, and 3) work as well as
 real-world issues (gotchas, backwards-compatibility, etc). We
 will concentrate on the basics of this stack-based protocol: what
 it looks like, how to encode/decode, speeds of different
 implementations.

 Reference) would be helpful for the curious to explore.

These are just the first four chapters. The manual has been divided
into three parts, so that they can be released early to the colleges.

Sure a Further Reading section would be useful, we will definitely
add them up.

 I hope the original manuscript is written in Docbook or equivalent

The manual is written in AsciiDoc, which is then converted to Docbook.

You can take this path AsciiDoc - Docbook - FO - RTF.

  1. AsciiDoc has a Docbook backend, so that shouldn't be a problem.
  2. Docbook XSL stylesheets[1] can convert Docbook to FO.
  3. Apache FOP[2] can convert FO to RTF.

If we were to take asciidoc-xsltproc-fop route, we will have to embed the

 We can choose any topic, create documentations on introduction, create

 Please update here, if you wish to contribute for the LAB Manual.

I would like contribute to this. I can provide help in the areas of
Python and GUI Programming.

I have been doing GNU/Linux training for quite sometime and I think I
can provide some useful inputs when it comes to doing a GNU/Linux
lab. The syllabus also seems to have some issues, but I think it can been
fixed up with a little bit or re-ordering and trimming. A few suggestions
for the lab manual:

  * There seems to be too many languages: Python, Perl, PHP, Gambas
... I would suggest that one language be used through-out the lab
exercises, and the others be just touched upon.

  * One of the problems with labs involving installation of kernel and
software packages, is that the students have to be given root
access. And there will be lot of maintenance overhead for restoring
the system back to a sane state. This can be avoided by installing
the packages within a VM. Within the VMs the students get complete
root access, and even if things screw up, the VM's harddisk image
can be restored from backup.

  * The better order would probably be: (I have choosen Python as
the primary language, here. But other combinations are also
imaginable.)

- Running Python
- GUI Programming (using Python)
- Version control systems ...
- Virtualisation
- Setting up the complete network ...
  (using a virtual network formed by multiple VMs)
- Installing various software pacakges (within VM)
- Compiling from source (within VM)
- Introduction to package management (within VM)
- Writing user space drivers (using Python)
- Kernel configuration, compilation and installation (within VM)
- Running PHP
- Running Perl

Anyone knows how to find the factorial of a number without

Use lookup tables. If you are using 32 bit ints to store numbers, you need a
lookup table till 12.

uint32_t factorial_lut[] = {
1,
1,
2,
6,
24,
120,
720,
5040,
40320,
362880,
3628800,
39916800,
479001600,
};

uint32_t factorial(uint32_t n)
{
if (n  13)
   return factorial_lut[n];
else
   return -1;
}

I could think of one reason why you would ever want to do this is - speed.

 How can i read a barcode using a C program.

 I can able to read barcode manually in a gedit. i Need to create a c
 program which reads the barcode device and write the data to a text file.

 How this can be done.

Input devices like keyboard, mice, etc. go through the input subsystem. And the
USB barcode reader in this case seems to act like a keyboard, and hence also
goes through the input subsystem.

Each of these input devices has a device file named /dev/input/eventN. When the
device file is read, key events are reported. See
http://www.thelinuxdaily.com/2010/05/grab-raw-keyboard-input-from-event-device-node-devinputevent/
for an example.

You will have to identify which /dev/input/eventN corresponds to your barcode
reader. This can be obtained from sysfs. Alternatively, there are aliases to
these device files, that make it more obvious. The aliases are present in
/dev/input/by-id/
