Yes you are right ! We can create as well edit pdfs in Open Office 3.0 . For
editing Pdfs you need to install a plugin named " Pdfimport " .

The following solution worked successfully in Ubuntu 9.10. I felt that you
could get some idea to install/search for similar solutions for Debian.
step1: remove all ns-allinone-2.3x directory (if you put it anywhere to install
ns2) and revert back all the path changes you made in ~/.bashrc related to ns2.
step2:  Now export the Wouter Horré's ppa repository key by typing the
following command on terminal and enter:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys B3F3334F
step3: Now add the following ppa repository to source list
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wouterh/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/wouterh/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
step4: Reload repository information when prompted by "The information about
available software is out-of-date" notification or reload it manually by
following command on terminal:
    sudo apt-get update
step5: Now type the following command on terminal to install ns from the
launchpad ppa repository:
sudo apt-get install ns nam xgraph
That's all. There is no need to set-up any path, environment variables or make
any changes in ~/.bashrc .

A friend of mine uses BSNL EVDO and connects to Internet in Ubuntu through
wvdial.
The cost is Rs.800/- with more than 512Kbps(1Mbps I guess! ) speed and he

[Ilugc] Reg: Maemo OS

2010-11-28 Thread Manoj Kumar
Hi friends,

I have a fantastic smartphone ever from nokia which runs fortunately on
linux kernel.
Nokia N900. It runs on Maemo os, the bestEST competent for Android, though,
i don't find a lot many developers on this platform..

I invite some tech wizards and geeks to join this adventure and get their
hands dirty on maemo.

MeeGo which is the next supposed version of Maemo comes from the world's two
biggest rivals in microprocessor technologies, Intel with the support of
AMD. And from the smartphone giant Nokia.

Expecting a good response.

Though there isn't any official support from nokia for maemo to meego
upgrade, there is an appreciable support from meego community and already
the MeeGo v1.0 for n900 and netbooks are out..
The other best thing that i'd like to add to your point>"The good news

is also a risky way to port android on n900. i also guess there is a project

As you say, there is no corporate push behind maemo or there is never going
to be any too.. I hear of some gossips saying that nokia is supposedly to
draw its support for maemo after it releases n9 with meego on it.

When it becomes true, MeeGo shud be the real go.

IMHO,the real drive behind android against any of its competitors is the
name google first of all and its better interface than others. I hope this
is infact achieved at Meego. But there is still not a welcome for Nokia's
stand against Andriod which may yet more make meego slow to pick up.

All of these still may surely be faked,if MeeGo meets 'our' needs.

Recently, I had a chance to try Ubuntu 11.04 in a Dell Netbook(inspiron mini

Till I read this mail, I was thinking that I had tested a netbook version of
ubuntu.
Truthfully, I am doubtful whether this UI would catch up. It wasn't much
user-friendly.
The boot screen was interesting. I feel that Ubuntu developers love Mac.
This is evident in each Ubuntu release. Ubuntus looks are being inspired
from Mac.

[Ilugc] [ILUGC] INSTALLING UBUNTU ALONGSIDE AN EXISTING OS

2011-04-12 Thread Manoj Kumar
Hi Friends,

I had installed ubuntu 10.10 on my windows PC (WUBI) inside windows. I had
to reinstall my windows so I installed the ubuntu directly onto the hard
disk using the option 'alongside the existing OS'. This asked me to select
whether to install on the whole disk or the largest partition on the disk. I
went on with the latter. After the installation, I could see the windows 7
on the boot options, but i cannot boot into it. I think the ubuntu has
changed the filesystem into ext3/ext4 for the whole disk instead of that
partition alone. This makes me now inaccessible to the windows 7. This seems
different from the previous installations of the ubuntu which never gave me
this problem. And the other problem now is, I cannot see the other
partitions from ubuntu. My hard disk is of 1TB memory. Now what ubuntu says
me is the whole disk is free(945GB). But i have almost of 700GB important
data in the drive.

I need some help in recovering this. Also in installing the ubuntu alongside
other OS.

Thanks and Regards,
Manoj Kumar

Hi balaji,

Thank you for the input. But I am sure that only the largest partition(131gb)
was selected and formatted while installing. That is the option i selected too.

I am as good as dead if i cannot recover the data. I thought ubuntu was going
to behave the same way as it was behaving before.

Any thoughts over this?

I have experienced this kind of weird stuff from Natty Narwhal. I remember
someone saying in some other thread previously, this is due to few of library
files and kernel files that are not upgraded to the new ones during upgrade
to 11.04 which is not the case in from-scratch installation of 11.04. Though
I am not sure what it is, a weird restart shown me some error which
mentioned some gnome library files are outdated and asked me to replace(not
even upgrade) to avoid the system errors.

Re: [Ilugc] How to make ILUGC list user friendly?

2011-07-14 Thread Manoj Kumar
Hi all,

First of all , I am thankful to all the members of this mailing list.

Thanks to the experts who had already given the answers just when i needed
so that i just needed to search my inbox. And thanks to those who had
already asked the questions.

Thanks to those novice users(including me), who often get advised(sometimes
bashed) to correct themselves. That has helped me to post a proper reply(I
hope this is) today.

I have posted just one or two queries to this list. Genuinely speaking, I
did get some answers but not though the solutions. And also some *fear* and
a chance to get corrected before posting to a list. After that, I never
preferred to post a query to this thread without searching the previous
threads for an answer. And i almost got all, and I neglected the unanswered
questions, as I didn't need them that badly. Maybe someone, who uses the
search option like me, hesitating to post his/her query, just because he/she
isn't sure if he/she had really understand the mailing etiquettes
*correctly* or because he/she is likely to be bombarded for a bad grammar,
might need it badly. I am sure, I will start contributing to this list at
some stage when I've gained some give-able amount of knowledge, before that
I would *understand* the mailing etiquettes completely. And I do not want to
hesitate to answer at that point of time, just because I would get a serious
advice to learn before trying teach.

I am not sure, even after going through the mailing list etiquettes, if
posting replies to two different posts in a same reply is right or wrong,
but I'm just going to post this, so that someone might correct me if this is
wrong.

Just insert the Ubuntu installation cd when you are in Windows. A wubi
installer pops up. It is quite intuitive to install Ubuntu through it. Make
sure you have a free drive partition(a minimum of 30GB is more than enough).

[Ilugc] How to roll back an interrupted ubuntu update?

2010-01-09 Thread manoj kumar
Hi!

A friend of mine tried updating Ubuntu 9.10 post installation. He was using
Toshiba  satellite laptop and the update process had to be interrupted due some
reasons. Later  he found that Ubuntu doesn't  boot in and it displayed the
following error :

Failed to load module
i810 module does not exist
glx error: cannot get required symbols

I tried googling, but couldn't find any satisfying solution, one of which is to
press key after turning on the laptop and to  proceed with the recovery
options.  Finally , i had no other option that to suggest him to backup
important docs by booting in through live CD and then make a fresh
installation. Since Ubuntu9.10 uses Grub2 i couldn't use my rescue disk  that
works with Ubuntu9.04.

Now my question is, in case if an ubuntu update is interrupted, is it possible
to rollback the updates(something like system restore in XP)?

p.s. He is not using  dual boot OS' . His laptop runs only Ubuntu9.10 and he is
newbie to Linux

Thank You !

This is a wonderful idea. It could be implemented using a wiki kind of website

Suggestion:
The contributions can be categorized as additional information, separated from

I use HP deskjet F4288 and i am able to scan and take print outs in Ubuntu even
without installing the HP  driver. I guess this would be the case even for
other Linux distros.
HP F4288 is now succeeded by F4488 and it can be used for
print-scan-copy(xerox).The cost is approx Rs.3550/-

If the print is hazy, try adjusting the side bar on the paper load tray, so
that it fits to the size of the paper.
The only downside is that printing in Linux consumes more ink. You could deduce
this from the wet paper that comes out.
Also it is recommended that you buy a new catridge. The one that came with your
printer is just an introductory catridge and would last for only 60 pages. A
new catridge costs around Rs.350 (original HP as well as compatible types). I
would suggest buying a compatible catridge over original. A refill would give
you a print of approx 200 pages.
Also learn to refill the catridge, this would be handy. Refilling a catridge in
Chennai costs Rs.50 at a minimum and Rs.100 at a max. "How to refill" videos
available in youtube!!

:)

Happy to release the 15th edition of the Kaniyam, an eMagazine for
Free/ Open Source Software in Tamil.

This is an excellent initiative Srini. The articles in the eMag are nice. Only
thing that matters is the size of the pdf. The size is unavoidable. However,
you can try reducing its size, while maintaining its clarity, through this
site: www.smallpdf.com

Wishing your team all success!

[Ilugc] server hang issue

2013-09-22 Thread manoj kumar
Dear All,

Here is my problem. I works on servers. In the recent days many of the
servers are getting hanged. so the servers need to reboot continuously. I
am unable to find the reasons to resolve or troubleshoot the issue. the
symptoms that i found during the system hang.

1. Multiple Crons are running at a time

2. Only a single process consuming most of the memory usage.

I found these things in /var/log/messages. I want to know any other logs to
check the system performance and i need the troubleshooting guide.

I use the IBM X3650 Servers. The OS is suse Linux and Centos.

Thanks in advance
