[Ilugc] Influence of M$ on hardware
Hi Just sharing a small incident of influence of M$ on hardware. I have been suffering with overheating of my Dell laptop for about over a month. It occurs(yeah still occurs) only with linux and not with windose. Earlier I thought it was a kernel issue but now I have figured out that the problem looks like that the acpi bios seems to be compiled with m$ compiler, though iasl for linux only reports certain optimizations only but a deep insight into dsdt.dsl indicates this or at least have m$ influence over it heavily. It seems that manufacturers are forced to comply by m$ otherwise they'll have to pay the "microsoft tax" in terms of getting blacklisted for distributing windose or create some other problems for them (I am not much aware of businees ethics :D ) Some findings and discussions have lead to this conclusion that some manufacturers have been duped into allowing there acpi code to be compiled by m$ compiler -- Siddharth Srivastava When you have learned to snatch the error code from the trap frame, it will be time for you to leave. ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
Re: [Ilugc] suggestion to buy laptop
Hi I planing to buy a Laptop. Mostly I will use Centos and OpenSUSE. I > need your suggestion to buy good Linux compatible Laptop. I seen the > bellow asus looks good for my budget and it has Intel Core 2 Duo > processor. If some have experiences with asus please share me. > > http://smartshoppers.in/product/asus-pro8bij-vx300d-laptop/ > > I would like to know about Linux prebuild Acer Laptop also. > My two cents. I have a Dell N4010 and since I have bought it I am facing lot of trouble working with linux. First: No linux distro(keep Mandriva away) detected it's network card out of the box. Second: the fan speed increases abruptly and the temperature goes haywire (though I am still struggling to get some utility working on it for measuring temperature-this is off topic though : ) So just check the compatibility issues of various components before deciding. > > > Thanks for your time. > > -Mohan L > ___ > ILUGC Mailing List: > http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc > -- Siddharth Srivastava When you have learned to snatch the error code from the trap frame, it will be time for you to leave. ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

[Ilugc] Compiling Marble
Hi I am trying to compile KDE Marble from source. I wanted both Qt and kde version on my system. How can I accomplish this ? I did the following: I needed to change the default installation locationi.e. /usr/local (otherwise both installation will overwrite each other) I used cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX= /usr/exportqt ../marble (exportqt is the directory where I want the Qt version to be installed) Any other way ? after this I used "make install" Then, I set the environment as export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/exportqt/bin/marble (marble is the name of the executable) Any other alternative to set environment ? But when I invoke marble from the shell, it says "marble not installed". On clicking the marble gadget icon from the applications directory it says " marble executable not found". How can I overcome this problem ? Thanks -- Siddharth Srivastava Human Knowledge is for all ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
