I had to dig this mail to fulfill a promise I made at the start of
the world cup. The source code is hosted here:
https://github.com/openbala/rummy.openbala.com

For those who are reading this mail for the first time:
I developed a website called 'Rummy' - http://rummy.openbala.com as a
pet project. This was a cricket game based on World Cup 2011 matches.

It had its run, now I'm working on the site for IPL. The website was
developed on Ruby on Rails. This mail is to say that the source code
of the site is open and it is available in github. (And I'll keep
checking-in new code as and when I commit to Heroku for IPL)

And BTW, please checkout the website you have not done so already - it
has an anonymous login for browsing as well - no need to have a
Facebook or Twitter account.

all source code on the internet have files that are not under version
control - or are dummies where they contain secret information like
passwords and keys.

Another word of caution!
Unfortunately Cricket it seems is not for the free minded :)

On your welcome page there is the World cup logo. Beware of the sharks, they
might come after you if your app becomes popular.

My caution is a little paranoid, but can any legal expert in this list throw
some light? Is just adding trade mark info enough legal protection? How can
you prove that there was no commercial interest in what you are doing?

Arun

Srini thanks,

This is deployed on Heroku and it is based on a git repository. So, I
can mirror/fork or host it in my github and share.

As Arun said, the API Id, key and secret are potentially abusable. In
fact, in my app I request for permission to post on their wall (to
inform that the results are out)
So, I've to hide those from the source code in the fork and show it
open. I shall do it soon. Thanks for the feedback.

Just a word of caution - Check, double check and re check what terms you
have signed up with Facebook when you got your developer and application
keys. Also, you should be extremely cautious about sharing code for a social
media based application. You are given access to the social graph through
the keys.

As a fellow LUGie, I expect to checkout the code from some repository,
rather than mailing you for the code.

Happy to explore the application but sad to see the unavailability of
the code for public .

Hope you open the code for public and help us to learn, reuse, share,
modify the code.

Thanks.

[Ilugc] [OT][Commercial] A World Cup game site

2011-02-19 Thread openbala
All,

I've a site created where the user chooses top 5 players per world cup
match and based on the player's performance - the user gets points and
ranked.

The site is : http://rummy.openbala.com

The site is developed on Ruby on Rails and deployed on Heroku.

P.S. - Even though the subject says [Commercial], it has nothing to do
with it. There are no ads. Only thing that you require is a facebook
account.
P.P.S. - I thought quite a lot before posting it in this forum, there
is nothing obviously related to 'free software' on this - please
consider this as a fellow LUG-gie's FYI.
P.P.P.S - I can give the source code to whoever is interested, please
contact me offline.
P.P.P.P.S - This site is dedicated to all you cricket lovers.

Thanks,
Balaji
