It's best to go with the most compatible hardware to ensure that
you can always try other hypervisors without problems.

This box which I use this at work is 1yr old now:

AMD Phenom X4 9650 processor
Asus M3N78-EM mother board
2 x 4GB OCZ Gold RAM
Dual port Intel EEPro NIC
2 x 750GB SATA HDDs

100% compatible with CentOS/Xen, and commercial Citrix XenServer.

VMWare ESX does not work -- cannot detect SATA controller.

KVM (untested) should not have any problems since most issues arise
due missing kernel drivers for disk controllers, NIC, etc. So it comes
down to which distro/kernel you will be using to run KVM.

I later found that out on wikipedia.

Bit slow but fast enough for me on OpenBSD at least.

I can claim to have some patience I suppose. Even as I speak I run
qemu.

But KVM is a linux thing right?

And there is kqemu acceleration on OpenBSD already. I don't usually bother.

Everything just works and is fast enough for me.

I never guessed that both of us were really talking the same thing.

For me cloud/virtualization/emulation/vmware/xen/whatever means qemu. ;)

The user land tools for KVM are qemu with KVM extensions (hard ware
acceleration)

I have not but saw it on a friend's laptop a couple of years ago. It
was slooow.

If you are familiar with the qemu options, then transition to the
qemu-kvm tools should be close to no-op (at least that is my
understanding not having used qemu at all).

As usual my answer is not going to help you. ;)

I run qemu all the time

http://aplawrence.com/Girish/qemu.html

It is emulation technology and it does not have any dependency but
this is my idea of virtualization. ;)

I have heard of KVM but dunno a thing about it.

Have you run qemu anytime? It is incredibly useful for my product dev
activities.

It took me a very long time to really get comfy with it.

Why? Even this project was born out of the power afforded by qemu.

I hope I did not end up hijacking this thread.

[Ilugc] Linux KVM on desktop with AMD CPU -

2010-06-12 Thread Arun Khan
Subject line pretty much says it all. I have a couple of Intel based
solutions and I am happy with the performance of KVM on them.

I am considering a third system (desktop) with LKVM capability on the
AMD/CPU platform.

>From the Mumbai ILUG list I got the following information but none of
the posters have used their desktop to run LKVM.
ASUS M4A785D-M PRO AMD Phenom 9650 Quad Core Processor + Gigabyte MA78GM-S2HP

I would appreciate input from members who have used LKVM on an AMD CPU
(desktop). Please give your motherboard + CPU combo.

Thanks,
