Re: [Ilugc] Quasar - Accounting Package

I tried openerp, and its UI is very good.. it needs some level of training
for using it..

But the value of the software can be ascertanined only based on how
successfully it is developed..

Openerp uses postgresql.. UI based on GTK library

dont know how tinyERP can suit this..

I think, if we could project the business usability of open source tools
such as tinyERP, openerp, ERP5 (exclusively for apparels industry), and
openbravo, opentaps etc, we can popularise FLOSS tools very easily..

Currently, i am using gnuCash for maintaining my personal accounts.. but
the reporting seems to be not user friendly.. but for maintaining personal
accounts, its a very good tool..

Regards,
Senthil

I have been able to get TinyERP to install and work on Fedora 9/10.
And OpenERP 5.0 RC1 on Windows. Will be trying out at home, on

How many firms are *really* using tinyerp/openerp in India?
Claims of extensive deployment/usage should be validated (e.g. on
openerp web site or the consultant's web site).

On a side note, I have not had much success getting openerp to work on
Ubuntu 8.04 and Centos 5.2. I have followed the instructions for
installing from the source (ensuring required libs etc.).

The "server" python script bombs with error messages (plan to follow up

tinyerp is a perfect replacement - is in use in quite a few establishments in
India - one of the leading CA firms in Mumbai uses it extensively. However,
Tally has features that make it very easy to cook up accounts to evade taxes
which is why it is so popular - tinyerp cannot do this.

What about OpenERP[1]? It has a accounting only profile[2], that one
can use for accounting only needs. There's also a project on launchpad
for Indian localisation of accounting known as accounts_india[3].
There's also Indian Chart of Accounts[4], though it was released quite
a while ago.

Hi !

Like using wine another practical option is the route taken by some of
the medium sized enterprises here in North America. It is possible to
run Xp machine in a virtualised environment like kvm. That way out of
say 20 linux machines one or two will run Xp Vms and should suffice
for small business. It is not 100% replacement but even 95% is a
progress in replacing windows !

Another option is using a hosted version so that only a browser is required.

Of course nothing like a replacement. Quasar works well but is it like
quickbooks tailored for North American market. If any of you want to
work on it and "indianise" it and making it suitable for Indian
market, I am willing to help out. Kalculate is made for Indian market
but I dont know what are the issues. I know Sudhir of Kalculate and
marking a copy of this thread to him so that he can respond.

Tally, Photoshop/ Pagemaker are going to be the biggest hurdles here.
Publishers have expressed direct concerns that they can't do without
Photoshop/ Pagemaker and Wherever we conducted Ubuntu Release event
Tally was the key application people insisted whether or not an
alternative/ replacement is there..

Luckily both appeared working with Wine in Ubuntu 8.10 and there was
good amount of joy in the faces of users. But even if it works we need
a replacement asap. Few people have even expressed their willingness
to help in creating a replacement.

You get only 2 of the four freedoms. But for a end user, those are
the two that are actually worth having (especially if it is in a specialist

Yes . It is not open source in true sense . But if you buy the
commercial license then you can see the source code. I dont know how
you classify this . It is a client / server and so you can deploy in

It is a replacement for Intuit " quickbooks" .I do not know how
