Search in any search with the error message.
You will get the answers, mostly.

If you search and did not get answers, then ask here.

I searched for you and got this link.

Follow this and proceed.

First fix the above before targeting other error messages from BIND.
I suggest you get an understanding on how DNS works if you have not done so.

SOA, NS records are mandatory.

Check the file vel.com
it seems no zone data is entered.

Check reverse.vel.com line 8.

Everything is resolved by the NS records for your domain.
Have you *changed* the NS records for your domain within the last
couple of days? The NS changes take a few hours to propagate.

dig has nothing to do with hosts. It uses bind and internet servers for DNS.

hosts is the file lookup method in /etc/resolv.conf. This has nothing
to do with BIND
 or dig.

the dns name is able to resolve to my hosted ip ? Strange thing is online

Actually forward & reverse zones are configured in the DNS servers. I can't
able to access my DNS server since there is no control for me. But when I
try to search in Active directory I can able to see the ubuntu machine in
the server OU. Hope I assume there will be an A record for the ubuntu
machine also.

In Windows PC, if i enter the DNS address in the TCP/IP properties the
netbios name resolve perfectly even the machine not in the member of
domain. What configuration requires in linux machine to work like windows
machine.

Are you running a caching DNS server on your laptop? I have also seen
changes propagate within a few minutes to my own intranet caching DNS
server.

> take a long time to penetrate squid in the office.

Assuming that you have done things correctly on your DNS tables:

The point is - DNS records from your SOA server are pulled by other
DNS servers and cached. Besides setting the TTL values etc, your SOA
DNS server has no control over the other DNS servers; which is the
point made by Raja.

Your proxy server is probably caching the DNS entries as well. As a
test, make a change in your DNS then stop/start your proxy server.
See if the change is picked up the Proxy server.

actually my reaction is a bit of knee jerk - I have very frequently
faced the problem where someone goofs up in setting the DNS and blames
it on time to propagate. Usually after a week or so, the guys finally

This is the best case scenario; you may have been lucky to see the
changes come through this fast.

My domain registrar (GoDaddy) says it *may* take 48-72 hours for the
changes to propagate worldwide. Changes are "pulled" by the various
DNS servers and some may not if the host is in it's cache.

A crippled workaround to this problem is:

1. define a new host name in your DNS server
2. force the "DNS" server to resolve this name i.e. host
ip_of_dns_server

This will force the DNS server to query the SOA, realize the change in
serial etc and update it's cache.

As a rule of thumb fundamental changes to the domain entries should be
done over the weekend.

By the specs, DNS caches should honor the domain's TTL values.
But there are several misconfigured relics (typically HP/Solaris bind)
run by ISPs till date which blindly cache all zones for 2 days.

It will take 24 hours to 3 days for DNS to fully propagate. Also, in this
scenario it is better to put a CNAME pointing www.abc.com to abc.com rather
than two 'A' records, IMHO.

So I put the "A" record for abc.com as 5.6.7.8 and also I put the "A" record
for www.abc.com as 5.6.7.8 in my zone files of master & slave servers.

The www.abc.com is resolving in new ip everywhere.
But still abc.com is resolving in older IP in many places. (I checked with
some of my friend's offices & like kloth.net sites)
my need is , abc.com has to resolve in new ip .
How can i sort out this issue?

Well I dunno about Centos.

You need to edit zone files and so on. They have an arcane syntax.

In OpenBSD you have a chrooted named that drops privileges and runs securely
with a non root user ID.

Everything is preconfigured.

All you need to do is have a line

named_conf=""

in /etc/rc.conf.local file.

And reboot.

You get a fully functional DNS server.

It is that cool.

This is a great place to deal with CentOS specific considerations.
However, IMO, it is also imperative to understand how DNS works (or
for that matter any service that one wants to deploy), at least at a
macro level i.e. action/re-action between client, server and root
servers. I find this kind of research/curiosity lacking from the way
the questions are posed.- just tell me what to do, I don't care how
the service works. The result is that we end up with unbaked
network/system admins who claim they know "xyz" service.

To the OP please do the following:

(a) spend the time on understanding how DNS works. It is the most
essential service that forms the platform for practically all other
network services.d If you don't get it right then nothing else will
work. TLDP (www.tldp.org) has a nice HOW-TO which delves into the
basics of DNS a good starting point. "DNS and Bind" by O'Reilly is
another great resource for DNS workings just as this is
. Both start from the basics and
then move on to BIND configuration.

(b) BIND is the default DNS server in most Linux distros. However,
the config files can be organized in different ways. The config file
organization in RHEL/Fedor/CentOS is different from that of Debian
which is quite different from that of openSUSE. Therefore, mention
which distro you are using and the version of BIND as well.

2010-04-20 Thread Immanuel Jeyaraj
Why do you need a DNS set up...

anyways, here is the procedure...

as root run the following... I am assuming you are using CentOS5.4

yum install dns
you will need some basic DNS zone files. If you are using GUI then
install system admin scrips

yum system-config-bind

run the system-config-bind. It will complain that you don't have
certain zone files. It will offer to create them for you... accept it.

now you can use your favorite editor to create your zone file...

nano / gedit /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf

You need to create your DNS server config file... it is our of scope
of this email...

after which you need to create 2 zone files (forward and reverse zone
files)... it is out of scope of this email...

after which you need to restart your dns server by issueing

service named restart

well, when you restart if you want your DNS server to start automatic then type

chkconfig named on

that is it...

It's in RFC 1034 at the end of Section 3.6.2. It is legal and BIND will
support it. Why would you do that, though? It doubles the number of
requests on the nameserver.

[Ilugc] DNS Zone File Clarification - BIND

2010-02-18 Thread Yogesh
Good Day,

I'm setting up a DNS server using BIND. I have a small clarification to
make.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIND9ServerHowto#Alias%20Records

The above link says that you cannot point one CNAME record to another. Which
means:

ns A10.10.5.5
www CNAME ns
test CNAME www

is illegal, right? The wikipedia article has an example for the contents of
the zone file, which has a CNAME pointing to another CNAME. I'm a bit
confused.. Please help. Can you also point me to the right RFC to look into
?? I'm looking at RFC 1035 but can't find any reference to this. Or may be I
simply fail to see where it's mentioned.

The way I understood the OP, he wants to setup DNS zone and not just
be a consumer from some other server that gets referenced via
/etc/resolv.conf

The quick (and archaic) way would be to add entries in /etc/hosts.
This works great when you have only one machine in your setup - no
overhead of installing BIND, creating forward and reverse maps etc.

See "man 5 hosts" for the format of each entry and also make sure that
/etc/nsswitch.conf has an entry like:

"hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns"

"files" must be the first entry; it forces the name resolver to look
at /etc/hosts first before querying a DNS server.

> and how to create domain and sub - domain ?
>> how to use that ?
>>
>
> This you can do by configuring / adding Virtual Hosts entries in the  web
> server config.

IMO, this is an incorrect answer. To be able to do the above you
still need the Vhosts to be defined in a DNS table (or /etc/hosts if
*all* name resolutions are done on one and only one machine).

To set up a "zone" associated with a domain name, OP needs to
register a domain name with a registrar and use that domain name.
Zones for sub-domains can be created by prefixing a name to the
registered domain name. I have seen people use domain names
registered for other entities internally - that creates problems and
should be avoided.

So for instance, let's say the domain name is registered as
example.com. A sub domains can be intra.example.com, further sub
domains could be chennai.intra.example.com etc. I hope you get the
picture.

BIND has excellent docs that come bundled with the software. I
suggest to OP to read those first and then ask specific queries on
things that you do not understand.

Let me hazard a guess at what you want to achive:

1. You want to use computer names using part or full FQDN e.g. ping
yourcomputer.yourdomain.com

2. You want a private set of computer names within your own premises
to appear in your network and not to the outside world.

3. You want to use the computer/domain names from the publicly
available one from all the computers within your network and you want
those names to be stored locally on your DNS server.

4. You want to know how to setup a dns server to address 1,2 and 3
above in a step by step way while understanding why each step has to
be taken and with what alternatives, if any.

Is your question understood properly?

1. Right click on NetworkManager applet.
2. Click on Edit Interfaces.
3. Select the interface you connect to.
4. Go to IPv4 settings and manually set DNS there.

You're probably getting an IP address and DNS through dhclient. Add the
following to /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4;

[Ilugc] DNS records and MX querying CGI

2009-10-12 Thread Girish Venkatachalam
Guys,

I have written a CGI script to figure out the IP address associated
with a domain.

It will also print multiple IP addresses associated with a domain.

Additionally what the script can do is print all the MX records(for
e-mail sending) with
their associated weights and IP addresses.

Take a look yourself:

http://spam-cheetah.com/dns.html

Of course you can download the CGI script and view the syntax
highlighted version
either here:

http://www.spam-cheetah.com/bgquery.html

Or you could go there from the query page.

Hope this is useful. In case you are curious you can read about DNS
from RFC1035.txt
which you can obtain like this:

$ wget ietf.org/rfc/rfc1035.txt

And you can

# perl -MCPAN -e 'install Net::DNS;'

and

$ man Net::DNS

I developed this code from the examples given in the man page.

2009-05-31 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

Would request someone to clarify the meaning of delegation-only and
root-delegation-only options. I searched on the net on the isc, redhat etc
websites however could not understand the meaning of "undelegated response"
and therefore am not able to understand the meaning of the above two
options.

Regards,
Ashish

Possibly add the other IP to /etc/hosts, in case you want to do it on
just a single machine. Or run your internal DNS server with the entry
for this domain, if you use it regularly and on more than a handful of
machines.

[Ilugc] dns round robin

2009-05-10 Thread Ashish Verma
Hi,

Scenario:

Accessed/logged in a web server using HTTP. Now when attempting to upload a
document, I get "Oops! This Link Appears Broken", which appears to be a
Google message for 404.

Is it possible for a browser to attempt to make connection on a different IP
mentioned in DNS for a server, for the purpose of uploading documents, where
there is already a connection established when logging in.

10.10.10.10IN A www.test.com
10.10.10.11IN A www.test.com //incorrect IP

Ashish

I cannot explain why this is happening but I am sure that

202.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 are the DNS servers of www.opendns.org

[Ilugc] DNS IPs

2008-09-17 Thread indianathan n
Dear experts,
When I use BSNL broad band and Airtel mobile internet
connection, DNS IPs are different for both Linux and Windows PCs.

For BSNL GPRS,

In Windows,
202.96.209.133, 202.96.209.5
In Linux,
202.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

For Airtel mobile internet,

In windows,
202.56.250.5, 202.56.250.6

In linux,
202.56.240.5, 202.56.230.6

When i tried to use windows DNS IPs in linux, Linux OS is not connected and
the same result for windows.

What is the reason for this?

Please explain or give me an link
