Adding to the list of reading material suggested by others:

Introduction to Economic Analysis by Preston McAfee. Its available at
http://www.introecon.com

Its hard core economics book which I hear (no, I have not read it )
covers the economics of abundance - the underlying philosophy of free
stuff - in contrast with the economics of scarcity - on which
philosophy much of today's laws and business models are framed.

Do tell us if you find it worthwhile :-)

Here are some more articles on the topic.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001247.html

http://journal.dedasys.com/2009/03/27/codinghorror-and-open-source-economics

http://journal.dedasys.com/2009/03/27/software-economics-public-goods

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_good

I think it is only in a maximally free market economy like the USA
that people would think of a "public good" as something to be created
by "market forces". Software grew in the USA and so it has acquired
the economics of that country!

Kapil.

This economic side of FOSS is still vague in many of our minds in this

We just saw sun being valued for 6 Billion USD. According to market cap
and revene data, I would say Redhat should be valued little less than Sun.
Together Sun and Redhat are the two most important and successful FOSS
companies out in todays industry.

PS: I don't answer your question. But I guess these data are relevant.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=foss+business+models will help. In the specific
case of Firefox, search engines like Google and Yahoo share revenue
based on the number of ad clicks they get via people using Firefox.

2009-03-25 Thread Selvakumar Rajeswaran

Hello all,
Can anyone explain the economics of a typical FOSS based business...
Say for example, if we take a FOSS company like Mozilla, what is its exact
business model ?
Since Mozilla software is free to download, where does the company actually
making money ?

This economic side of FOSS is still vague in many of our minds in this mailing
list including me.

Thanks,
Selva.
