[ilugd] Re: Accessing NTFS filesystems from Linux

2003-08-04 Thread Bhaskar Dutta
Hi,
I would like to make a few suggestions to Subodh on mounting
NTFS partitions under Redhat.

Firstly please check whether NTFS support is enabled in the
kernel. Redhat doesn't support NTFS in the kernel due to certain
legal reasons. I dont know about PCQ Linux 8.0. Check whether NTFS
is supported by executing

# cat /proc/filesystems

If you see the word NTFS in the output then you are through! Else
you will have to download the NTFS modules for your kernel from

http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/redhat.html

Install the RPM for your kernel you obtained from the site.
You may also compile a kernel with NTFS support from the kernel
sources if you can.

After this phase is over, type

# fdisk -l /dev/hda

to find the devices mapped to your windows NTFS partitions. If
your C Drive is NTFS, you will see hda1 mapped to NTFS and so
on...

Now, create mount points for your NTFS partitions like:

# mkdir /mnt/win_drive

and then mount the partition (READ ONLY) by:

# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_drive -t ntfs -r

Be careful not to mount the drive with default settings as then it
mounts in rw mode which may end up screwing your NTFS file
system.

Remember to unmount the drive before shutdown by doing

# umount /mnt/win_drive

To automagically do all the above stuff of mounting and
unmounting, add the following line to your /etc/fstab file:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs ro0 0

Note: Remember not to mount the drive with write option as it is
not fully supported. If you store any tarballs in the NTFS drive
and try to unzip them using gzip or bunzip etc, you will be
writing to the NTFS partition. Don't do this as it may result in a
corrupted file-system.

RE: [ilugd] Problem in loading linux 6.2 in 40 GB Hard disk

2003-08-04 Thread Tarun Upadhyay
To be precise, there is nothing called Linux 6.2. You probably are trying
to install Redhat 6.2.

With that aside, let us come to your real question - for which my
counter-question is why do you want to install such an old version of
Redhat. Older version would have more security issues and compatibility
problems with newer hardware (including with your hard disk). I would
suggest that you go with a newer version of Redhat (if you chose that to be
your poison) - say 9.0 or 8.x.

Of course, I am assuming that you are a newbie here - since you asked a
newbie question. If you understand what you are doing, by all means install
and run redhat 6.2.

With Warm Regards

okay, first let's get the *facts* right.

the name Linux, is derived from the name of its creator, Linus Trovalds.

So the next question: how do we pronounce the name, Linus.

that's really simple.

Linus, in the classic style of unix and C terms, is the indian name, Sunil in
reverse. Apparantly, according to uncofirmed reports, Sunil Trovalds'
ancestors, after having learnt UnixTantra in ancient India through severe
yoga practises, left to share its secrets to other, barbaric worlds, where
goddess sarasvati, the goddess of knowledge, was kept locked and jailed in
the Lanka of Patenting KopyRIte. All of this was revealed to the Trvolads
elders in a dream sequence.

Sunil grew up to be an ordinary, conservative boy, and at the appropriate
time, changes his name from Sunil to Linus, and ushered forth into the world
a 'beej mantra' called a 'kernel' in the Unix world.

This beej mantra is correctly pronounced as Sunil but said in reverse. Hence
Leenus.

Uttering it in the right tone, right bhaav, and right frame-of-mind,
apparantly unleashes a powerful, self-replicating kernel (much like
ghatotkaccha) that is supposed to create a worldwide storm that will finally
free sarasvati from her chains. or so it is hoped.

RE: [ilugd] wireless lan

2003-08-04 Thread Sandeep Gupta
hi yogesh
wlans come in two modes: infrastructure and ad-hoc. but considering your
requirements, u should operate in infrastructure mode. there would be
one (or more) Access Point (AP) and all the clients would have wireless
ethernet cards installed in them. The AP provides an interface between
the wired and wireless networks. So, you can actually continue to run
your servers on the wired n/w.
we have deployed a wlan in our campus and use Dlink products. They
operate at 22 Mbps. Dlink didnt release linux drivers for these products
but fortunately a sourceforge project did so, recently. so running linux
clients would not be a problem either.
hope this helps

[ilugd] The Mimail worm story: from the IEEE CS

2003-08-04 Thread Shuvam Misra
This message came to me because I am a member of the Computer Society of
the IEEE. It appears that the virus-warning spurious messages are
affecting them too. This is an interesting wrinkle to the PC-based worm
story.

[ilugd] Linux distributions for North Delhi users

2003-08-04 Thread Bhaskar Dutta
Hi,
I am willing to burn Linux CDs for people residing in and
around north Delhi. If you don't stay in this vicinity, you may
still get the CDs provided you pick them up from my place. I have
the following distributions:
 Debian 3.0 r1 (First 3 binaries)
 Redhat 9.0 (3 CDs)
 Redhat 8.0 (6 CDs)
 Mandrake 9.1
 Mandrake 8.2
 Knoppix 3.2

I will not be charging any money for the CDs provided you get
your own blank CDs. Otherwise the charge will be for the price of
CDs only. But please don't ask for all the distributions at the
same time. Choose only the one that suits you the most and I will
burn it for you. You may mail me at my email address for address
details. I stay in north campus, Delhi University.

 Regards,
 Bhaskar Dutta

Re: [ilugd] spam problem !

2003-08-04 Thread Suresh Ramasubramanian
Jim De wrote on July 12, 2003 re: [ilugd] spam problem :

Thanks for the feedback. I am using postfix but it is currently in the
closed intranet
environment. for external email i am still stuck with using the smtp and
pop3 services
of our host provider.

If you get such problems mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you have a dedicated IP from palcom, and want to send mail out to the
ilugd list using it ... if that is the case mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with details of what your IP is.

If you are using Palcom's smtp server to send out mail do note that their
entire IP block is listed in assorted antispam lists because they are
hosting spammers on a non-stop basis, and not paying any attention to
complaints.

You can find several providers who have an antispam attitude and also
provide smtp auth capable email (for free even) - http://www.myrealbox.com
for example. Other providers (such as http://www.pobox.com and
http://www.fastmail.fm for example) will sell you imap/pop3 + smtp auth
accounts for a moderate rate per month. Lots of other providers too -
indiainfo, yahoo etc provide pop3 + smtp auth for a premium rate.

Or you can be an ultra geek and use an ssh tunnel to send out your mail
through a free shell account somewhere (like arbornet.org /
grex.cyberspace.org)
