[ilugd] Directory Permission..

2003-09-12 Thread J.Mohamed Zahoor
Hi luggers,
I have one baaasic question...
Assume that i have 2 account in my linux box, one is
xxx and other is yyy. They both are in different groups.
i have the permission for their home directoties as given below.

drwxr__r__ xxx
drwxr__r__ yyy

I want the files of xxx to be been read by the user yyy.
But when the user yyy does as cd /home/xxx.. it says
permission denied. WHY IS THAT SO. because the user xxx has
given read permission to all, still user yyy cannot enter
user xxx home directory.

But... But when i changed the permission of the home directory
of xxx as follows

drwxr_xr_x xxx

Then user yyy is able to do cd /home/xxx.

Can anyone explain the secret involved...

2003-09-12 Thread Robins Tharakan
hi all,

this is more of informative mail, rather than a question.

in the ilugd meeting held on july 20th i presented a small project about
trying to automate/simplify patch/kernel management according to needs
of the user, rather than download the hole patch/kernel and then let
compilation select whats required.

a small final-pre-rc0.01 is up on the net for viewing.

http://vavilu.hypermart.net/index2.htm
or
http://photos.royans.net/~robins/

(intro for people who werent around then...)
basically they allow you to select current/target version of the kernel,
and give you a custom patch for that. the best part being if you select
the architecture, (for e.g. ppc) it'd remove all other architectures
from the patches.)

1. there are lots more of TODOs, and aims for the project given on the
website...
2. still trying to get sourceforge.net to allow cgi/pl or else hypermart
ki jai!!
3. you probably wouldnt be able to do much about the patch, maybe just
try seeing it in "less" or something for a viewing thats all. its *not*
a bz2 file!!

i'd post further updates whenever they are available.

cheerios!

Programmer to Project Leader:
"This is not possible!!! Impossible. It will involve design change
and nobody in our team knows the design of the system. And above that
nobody in our company knows the language in which this software has
been written. So even if somebody wants to work on it, they can't. If
you ask my personal opinion the company should never take these type of
projects."

Project Leader to Project Manager:
"This project will involve design change. Currently we don't have
people who have experience in this type of work. Also the language is
unknown so we will have to arrange for some training if we take this
project. In my personal opinion, we should avoid taking this project."

Project Manager to AVP:
"This project involves design change in the system and we don't have
much experience in that area. Also not many people are trained in this
area. In my personal opinion we can take the project but we should ask
for some more time."

AVP to SVP:
"This project involves design re-engineering. We have some people
who have worked in this area and some who know the language. So they
can train other people. In my personal opinion we should take this
project but with caution."

SVP to CEO:
"This project will show the industry our capabilities in modeling the
design of a complete system. We have all the necessary skills and
people to execute this project successfully. Some people have already
given in-house training in this area to other people. In my personal
opinion we should not let this project go by under any Circumstance."

CEO to Client:
"These are the type of projects in which our company specialize. We
have executed many projects of the same nature for many big clients.
Trust me when I say that you are in the safest hand in the Industry. In
my personal opinion we can execute this project successfully and that
too well within the given time frame."

Hi,
I had already posted a reply to ur problem earlier today. Please
refer to that mail for a solution and then mail back to the group
if u can't solve the problem.

 Regards,
 Bhaskar
P.S. I wonder why you are using a multi-processor kernel(???). I
assume you system is a uniprocessor box. If so, please load the
2.4.20-8up kernel instead.

Hi,

Just because the windows OSs are not kind enough to allow you to
retain the previous MBR, you dont need to upgrade your
installation to get back grub. You can get back the bootloader by
a simple grub-install.
For that, you need to use the boot cd of the linux distro. Enter
"linux rescue" at the prompt and answer a few simple questions.
Then you are dropped to a shell. chroot to /mnt/sysimage and you
will have you installation as /. Running "grub-install /dev/hda"
(read the info pages on grub for variations and details) will
restore your MBR.

Coming back to your spawning problem, there seems to be an issue
with upgrading, possibly with glibc (anyone knows about it?).
Open /etc/inittab in an editor and change the "id:5:initdefault"
line to "id:3:initdefault".
Find the entries for tty4, tty5, tty6 (will be like
"4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4" etc) and comment them out.
Try rebooting the system now and hopefully you will be seeing a
login prompt. The init level will be 3 so you will be in a bash
shell. Try starting X and reply back if you have further
problems.

 Affly,
 Bhaskar
