Re: [ilugd] libsigc++ install problem

googled it, downloaded the tar.gz. extracted the folder, changed to
root, navigated to the directory using cd, and issued the usual combo of
 ./configure
 make
 make install

 all okay.

the original application still demanded libsigc++.

curious, i did an rpm -qa libsigc++ and the shell came back
 empty-handed.
[snip]...

did an ls into /lib and found it does not exist there.

 what's going on?

Source packages are installed in the /usr/local directory.
So your libs are getting installed in /usr/local/lib and not /lib.
Check the Makefile of the source package.
You will find a line prefix = /usr/local.

This is basically done by all source packages so as not to mess around with
the default system settings. /usr/local/ holds all such sources you compile
and install. The system doesn't mix up between the two.
Even after you did a make install, the package is still asking for the lib.
That means your /usr/local/lib path is not searched for library files. You
are required to add the path to search for library files.
Read the INSTALL file that comes with the libsigc++-1.0.4 tarball. Also
./configure --help will show you how to change the default install
directories.

Either you edit the Makefile ( not recommended as files might be erased etc)
to install them in the system directories or pass parameters to the configure
script.

Also, when you install a source package, the rpmdb doesn't get updated.
Installing a package with rpm -ivh *** updates the rpmdb so you can use rpm
- -qa to query the BerkeleyDB database. So the database doesn't know about the
new install you had done. Querying it is meaningless. Hence you didn't get
any result. But its installed OK. You only have to give the proper links to
the library files directory.

Bhaskar

[ilugd] Fedora Core 1(yarrow) CDs available

2003-11-06 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
Thanks to some unusual largesse of my ISP, there was no cap over my
bandwidth today. And I could download all the three CDs of Fedora Core 1
within 12 hours (144kBps!! :) )

All those who want copies can mail me, grab some blank CDs and head over
to my place to get them burnt!

For those who haven't heard about Fedora, it is the new name Red Hat
Linux (sortof). So this version is like Red Hat Linux 9+.

[ilugd] About RedHat Linux and Novell

2003-11-06 Thread Varun Varma
There have been a lot of rumours lately about how free Linux is coming
to an end. My 2 cents worth...

RedHat discontinuing RHL:

I think that RedHat, knowingly or not, handled their PR very badly with
this one.

With Fedora, RedHat had now moved to community driven development model
one of the greatest successes of the open source movement. They have
contributed a commercial product base [aka RHL] to the project, apart
from providing technical and manpower resources. Hopefully, this would
achieve what Debian couldn't [last update to the stable release on 16th
December, 2002].

RedHat should be thanked for this, not condemned.

There is going to be pressure on RedHat to make Fedora work. They can't
have a highly visible project like this go bad it would reflect poorly
on Linux itself and thus their own enterprise product base would be in
jeopardy. They have built their entire credibility on the RHL product
line - imagine what would happen to that if Fedora bums out.

Remember, while RHL has been discontinued, the customers haven't been
left in a lurch...Fedora offers an upgrade path to RHL.

RedHat CEO saying You should buy Windows:

I couldn't agree more. I am not going to recommend running Linux to my
aunt...imagine the hoops uncle would have to go through to get a video
player to work when he want's to see porn.

Matthew Szulik's comments have to be taken in perspective. He is not
saying that Linux is not meant for desktops - in fact he says that it is
an excellent option for enterprise desktops.

And people with a appetite for technology can use Linux very effectivelt
as a desktop. But, is not for the average home user - not yet.

Novell's acquisition of Suse:

This, if anything, confirms the viability of Linux in the enterprise.
Novell would be able to help Linux penetrate into a wider market. Linux
penetration would continue to increase as it was, and Novell would
simply add it's roster of enterprise customers to this base, making even
 more people look at Linux.

Because of the various other networking/office/collaboration software
that Novell makes, they might be able to offer a comprehensive Linux
based alternative to the Microsoft platform.

For very long, one of very thin criticisms for Linux has been it has no
support the only support you can is from college kids on mailing
lists. Novell is now committing it's support infrastructure to Linux.

Also, this would make Novell compete with RedHat in the Enterprise Linux
space. And we all know that healthy competition makes everyone better.

not so bad after all.

Fedora is much like Debian unstable. The ancient
kernel of Debian woody is one thing which will keep it
away from Enterprise use.

RedHat CEO saying You should buy Windows:

My 11 year old son uses Linux to browse the Net,
listen to mp3 music, play some games. Much like hw
would do in Windows. He has a separate account on my
home PC to log in. His only crib is that some of the
games he does not find on Linux. He cannot install a
software on Linux, cannot do system administration,
cannot install Linux on a PC. But then these are the
tasks many adult Windows users cannot do on Windows. I
don't deny that there remain issues for Linux on the
desktop. But still I will say that Linux is desktop
ready.

But the beauty of Linux is not there. It is that I
have freedom to do what I like on my system, even
trash it , and that I have so much of choice
vailable. Under Windows, I cannot even think of it. Of
the average individulas using Windows on their PC at
home, how many will be using paid software, AutoCad,
Adobe and what not, if they were to dish out money?
And how many will notice if Linux is configured and
bundled along with their machine when they buy it? Of
the myriad features of the so-called powerful Windows
software, how many we really make use of, unless we
make proffessional/commercial use of the software?

My two cents...

no doubt fedora and SuSE acquisition would definately help Linux in
enterprise, but this is a move which would change the stand and vision of
Red Hat purely for the narrow commercial gains(RMS) .

this is a vast departure from the values on which the company started off
and gained support from the community .

as far as Novell is concerned i can just say back with the vengance :)

[ilugd] XConfiguration (Help)

2003-11-06 Thread Sushant
Hello,

I just installed TurboLinux version 8.0.

My problem is, X windows do not react to the keystrokes (i.e. i do not get any
response from the Xwindows) and as a result i was unable to login the GUI mode.

Initially the system used to launch the xdm by default and i had the runlevel 5 set in
the inittab file.
Now, whenever the system booted in the runlevel 5 i was unable to come to the command
prompt, because the system didn't recognize the keyboard (i tried ALT+ctrl f1).

Then i logged in single user mode, and change the inittab file to set the runlevel 3
as the default runlevel
Now after booting in the aforementioned runlevel, i tried launching kdm instead of xdm,
but still on the login screen, there is no response for the keyboard events.
And the strange part is, the command shell recognizes the keyboard.

Kindly help me on this issue.

Thanx
