What profile? newusers will create a home directory and populate it

Sandeep not contain variable for profile additon(Users Name,
Sandeep Designation department). Please suggest.

Uh, where're you going to store this information? The normal means to
add additional data about users is in the pw_gecos field of
/etc/passwd, i.e. the 5th field. The de facto way of doing this is:

Fullname,Department,Office Phone,Residence Phone

Finger will interpret the pw_gecos field according to this schema. If
you want to add to this you'll have to go in for LDAP or a database to
store your users' information in.

Arjun,

You may go ahead with IPTABLES which will also help you in NAT/Proxy --
Simple and Sweet :-)
Or else squid is also an option wherein you can use ACLs and data
caching simultaneously...

HTH...

Dear Friends,

I plan to use an old PC based Linux firewall/router for my father's
office network. I want to know which ones are good and can be
used/implemented easily.
There will be around 20 Win/Lin machines with one proxy+mail server (may
be Linux). The network will be connected to Internet thru
cable/DSL/Modem.
The Lin firewall/router will sit between the internal network and
internet.

[ilugd] T-Shirts (Final Call)

2003-12-26 Thread Tarun Dua
Hi All,

1. We still have to decide the logo(AFAIK), a quick show of results from the
ILUG-D polls officially declared by the linux-delhi.org webmaster is
awaited on the list.
2. This is the last and final call to order your Linux Delhi T-Shirts
(all subsequent T-Shirt related discussion except the logo choice shall be
taken OFF-LIST and completed before 7th January the cutoff date).
Please E-mail Tarun Dua / or call him at 919811912182 (or send in your
Cheques for Lords Wear payable at Delhi on or before 7th January) after
which no more requests for T-Shirts will be entertained.
T-Shirt Prices ( Less than 5 : Rs. 130/- each, 5 or more: Rs. 125/- each)
3. People who have ordered the T-Shirts need to specify the sizes. I'll
confirm and reconfirm before I place the order.
(OFF-list please)
4. Those who have not ordered the T-Shirts please note that Linux Delhi will
not be stocking any T-Shirts for you.. 76 T-Shirts (including Sudev's 50)
have been ordered at the last meet. The shortfall(we needed atleast 100)
has been covered by Raj/Kishore and yours truly (however my guess is that
neither of us may actually be able to save T-shirts for the lazy guyz to
buy laternot me atleast)

[ilugd] How to represent a number as binary in C

2003-12-26 Thread Kapil Sethi
Hi,

We all know that in C, to represent a number in hexadecimal we prefix the
number
with a 0x
eg. 0x100 is hexadecimal.

1. What suffix/prefix is used if we want to represent a binary number?

2. What suffix/prefix is used if we want to represent an octal number?

Thanks

Re: [ilugd] How to represent a number as binary in C

2003-12-26 Thread ANUJ SEHGAL
Hey Kapil,

Hmm... Homework or test question??? ;) Anyway, here is a list of how to
represent number in C, C++ and Java:

 1. Octal - To represent octal prefix a number with 0. Eg:
074728 is an octal number.
 2. Hex - To represent Hexadecimal prefix a 0x. Eg: 0x1137 is a
Hexadecimal number.
 3. Binary - Strange that you would ask this coz computers
always store numbers in binary irrespective of how we represent it. So,
even an octal and hex is simplified to binary and stored. It us up to
the programmer on how to display a number. The representations are
useful for storing numbers coz this we the programmer doesnt need to
conver them to binary. C, C++ and Java by default use decimal
representation (but for computing purposes it is converted to Binary).
But if you have a binary number that you wish to store in a variable, it
needs to be converted!

Hope this helps.

Hi ,
  Something serious ? :)
Any way the solution to query .
1 capturing audio is basically reading /dev/audio or /dev/dsp
  eg , dd bs=8k count=5 /dev/audio test
with this you will have 5 seconds of data . { ( sun
audio format (.au)  u-law encoding )) }
cat test /dev/audio to hear it again.

/dev/dsp is better a alternative because the ulaw
encoding adds some noise ...distortion if you like to call it... and
the above example most
probably, will not work with /dev/dsp ...:)

If you are looking for oscilloscopes:
http://linux.maruhn.com/sec/xoscope.html. google for more.

 other relevent information :

  http://www.alsa-project.org/applications.php3
info : open sound system is obsolete as of 2.6.0
(ALSA is the standard , although an OSS emulation is provided )

  2. Octave (http://ww.octave.org ) is the thing you are looking for.
Don't expect to find a feature by feature copy of Matlab, but I think it
should suffice.
Hey, btw you can always use the Linux version of
Matlab ;) .

regards
Ankit .
ps : i nearly forgot about audacity .

Hi..
[snip]

ironically, in most cases you could actually find a
 superior technology
to one offered as mukt and muft under gnulinux.

True. So would companies really go head first into the
pool that is Opensource?

so i've discovered, precedents, case-studies, peer
 pressure, competitor
adoption, and best-practises in verticals work far
 more effectively.

Hasnt the trend recently been to incorporate a mixture
of OSS and Closed Source/Propreitary software? Most
corporates and organizations initially looked on OSS
as an answer to their prayers, what with cost savings
and blah blah..

[correct me if i'm wrong, but reading any industry
related news seems to bring about this conclusion..]

look at the stage of development at which most of the
OSS programs are.. they'd be great for individuals and
computer enthusiasts but would an organization be
willing to bet a couple of million dollars on
something like that?
