yes, i know what extraordinary effort anand has to put in, to attend an
ilug-d. once he hitched all the way to piragari for a meet, then got a
lift till near hyatt on ring road, to catch a bus to take him back to
faridabad. so abhishek, would love to see you make an effort just once
to get till faridabad in turn. looks like we haven't had an ilug-d in
faridabad for a long time (maybe *very* long time, or even never) so
let's have one there.

the national capital region has a population of more than 10 million
people, condensed into delhi, gurgaon, faridabad, noida, in a growing
radius. am sure you'd find a couple of tiny countries with that kind of
population. so how many people among these 10 million can we reach out
to, with the message of gnulinux?

the NCR is the treasure-chest of the North of India. The North is the
treasure-chest of the country. THis is also the biggest market for
computers in india. if ilug-d has to hike it once a month across the
span of the NCR, no big deal.

[ilugd] Knoppix Kicks!!!!!

2004-01-13 Thread Suraj Berwal
Hi All,
I got a Knoppix3.2 CD last saturday. Today I have run my system on
Linux(Knoppix) for the whole day without any major hiccups.
Wonderful!
Here are some things I noted:
1. My sound card was not working with windows98. some driver conflict issue.
ran Knoppix and woila! sound card just started emitting some wonderful
music. All my colleagues were left stunned! The sound quality was much
superior to what I have on windowz.
2. Network configuration and windows network browsing using Lisa were so
easy. Neednt mention the autodetection of hard drive was such a pleasure.
3. Only problem is when I tried to make a persistent image of Knoppix on the
filesystem that it threw an error. i dont remember the error but was
concerning some KDE file which it could not locate in /usr/share/
directory. If someone could help me with this then It would be really easy
for me to switch to Linux. Now that I am really tired of all this
windowz bamboozle.
4. Another thing is I need a email client which can import all my mails from
the Outlook Express 6.

Just once again Knoppix kicks and windowz s...
Waiting for your replies...

it converts dbx datafiles into mbx, which almost all email clients open.

your real problem is your contact list. just export that as an ldap

Package: cvs
Vulnerability : multiple problems
Problem type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE Id(s) : CAN-2003-0977

The account management of the CVS pserver (which is used to give remote
access to CVS repositories) uses a CVSROOT/passwd file in each
repository which contains the accounts and their authentication
information as well as the name of the local unix account to use when a
pserver account is used. Since CVS performed no checking on what unix
account was specified anyone who could modify the CVSROOT/passwd could
gain access to all local users on the CVS server, including root.

This has been fixed in upstream version 1.11.11 by preventing pserver
from running as root. For Debian this problem is solved in version
1.11.1p1debian-9 in two different ways:

* pserver is no longer allowed to use root to access repositories

* a new /etc/cvs-repouid is introduced which can be used by the system
administrator to override the unix account used to access a
repository. More information on this change can be found at
  http://www.wiggy.net/code/cvs-repouid/

Additionaly, CVS pserver had a bug in parsing module requests which
could be used to create files and directories outside a repository.
This has been fixed upstream in version 1.11.11 and Debian version
1.11.1p1debian-9 .

Finally, the umask used for 'cvs init' and 'cvs-makerepos' has been
changed to prevent repositories from being created with group write
permissions.

Re: [ilugd] How does Microsoft armtwist its own partners?

2004-01-13 Thread Puneet
Microsoft plans to broaden its attack on Linux and related operating systems
this week by giving away a set of tools for migrating applications to
Windows.

The company is expected to release on Thursday a new version of Services for
Unix (SFU), a collection of tools that help Windows systems to work with
installations based on the Unix operating system and its open-source
derivative, Linux.

Microsoft previously charged $99 per client or server to use SFU. But the
new version, 3.5, will be free for any customer using a current Windows
operating system.

SFU packages an array of tools designed to accomplish two main tasks: that
of allowing Unix and Windows systems to work together by using common file
systems, directories and other resources; and that of helping information
technology workers to migrate applications from Unix to Windows.

regards,

Puneet

Microsoft Monday launched a new advertising campaign designed to extend
its
fact based assault on the Linux operating system.

The campaign consists of a two-page advertisement, which was featured in
six
computer industry trade publications this week, that cites a 2002 IDC
study
that found that Windows 2000 costs organizations less to operate for a
variety of server tasks including networking, security, and file and print
serving. Reams have been written about Windows and Linux, the ad reads,
Let's skip to the bottom line.

On the next page, the advertisement directs readers to a page on
Microsoft's
Web site which contains a number of case studies and analyst reports that
tout the benefits of the Windows operating system.

The campaign is expected to run for six months, although Microsoft has not
yet decided on an end date, according to a company spokeswoman

Though Microsoft declined to say what it was spending on advertising, the
simple print advertisement is markedly different from the high budget
Linux
ads that rival company IBM launched in September of last year, which were
created by New York ad agency Ogilvy Mather and featured such
celebrities
as boxer Muhammad Ali and director Penny Marshall.

The difference is telling, said Bruce Perens, a Linux advocate and one of
the founders of the Open Source Initiative. IBM's advertisement targets
high
level executives, while Microsoft appears to be targeting more technical
 users, Perens said.

IBM understands that the people who really need the message are at the
top, he said. I think that the IBM ad says, 'Buy Linux and save your
company.' The Microsoft ad says, 'Buy Microsoft and save your job.'

Microsoft characterized the advertisement's focus on IT professionals as
in
line with the fact based campaign it has waged against Linux since
summer
of last year. That's when the company's general manager of platform
strategy, Martin Taylor, vowed to reduce the level of emotion in
Microsoft's
 criticism of Linux. There were some emotional statements made before;
we're
now on a direction to talk about the facts, he said at the time.

Monday's advertisement continues in that vein, a Microsoft spokeswoman
said.
We were looking at targeting the IT pros. IBM's was a broader Linux
movement campaign, she said. It's the IT professionals who want the
 facts.

According to Perens, the advertisement simply shows that Microsoft is
afraid
of Linux, and give the open source operating system more credibility in
the
enterprise. I think that Microsoft should continue this campaign in other
publications, he said. In fact, they should buy some TV ads; maybe a
 Superbowl ad.

 njoy!

[ilugd] Request to sign the petition

2004-01-13 Thread Ritesh Agrawal
Hi All,,

I know it is offbeat topic ,but i couldn't not stop myself to post it.

regards
Ritesh Agrawal

 So unfortunate !!

 Hi All,

I need help- firstly this is not a chain letter, this is a personal request, and
won't take even 5 min of your time - im sure all of you have heard of Satyendra
Dubey, the IIT Civil Engineer, who went straight from campus to work on the PM's pet
Golden Quadrilateral Project, when he could have been one of those who flock to the
U.S in droves. Here are some facts:

Dubey graduated from IIT Kanpur in 1994 as a civil engineer and started working for
the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). He was posted on to the PM's pet
project, the Golden Quadrilateral, for a segment in Bihar.

Last year in November, he wrote a letter to the government officials, specifically
the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) alleging corruption in the handling of contracts to
third-party vendors and mismanagement of funds by contractors. He attached his
references in a separate letter, stating clearly that he would like to remain
anonymous and feared reprisal from the relevant people.

This year on 27th November, he was gunned down in Patna.

These words from Sudipto Majumdar, 21, in a letter to the PM in To I say it all -

I can feel how Satyendra might have felt in staying back home and deciding to build a
new India - right under your guidance and vision
Isn't this what you always wanted? Didn't you try convincing IITians over the
years to stay back in India and make a difference? When someone tried, where were you?
May be busy deciding on poll tickets, may be selling dreams to some villagers, or just
may be wiping and hiding the rot that is all around us
My friends who emigrated then, with whom I differed in my beliefs, seem to stand
corrected in retrospect - they were the real smart ones. I was among the romantic
idealists who decided to stay and work in India. But I am lucky to be alive. May be
because I didn't stretch my honesty and idealism as far as Satendra did
Mr Vajpayee, on behalf of all IITians, I thank you for spending lakhs on every
IIT student every year. But please don't sell them dreams that can kill them. If
Satendra's killers are not punished, not many IITians would trust the government with
their futures.

PLS. PLS. take a stand and help his family and friends secure justice- India needs
more Satyendra's but courageous ppl shud not have to lose their lives. Help us by
signing this petition to the PM, it won't even take a minute. Pls. fwd this mail to as
many of your friends as possible.

 Thank You
 Best Regards
