Re: [ilugd] Re: Re: Re: Re: A Central CD vendor found--but there is a catch

2004-06-03 Thread Sharninder

1. Who posts to bazee at what frequency?
2. Who delivers the product?
3. Where from does one get CDs to sell them?
4. How is that better than ILUGD CD list?

Well, staying in Calcutta and with an extremely taxing job, I can't
really coordinate with ilugd for this even though I would love to be of
help to the community. Baazee is basically an online auction site and
*almost* a total copy of ebay. Lots of shopkeepers and other ppl sell
through baazee with a option which they provide called quick buy. Items
under quick buy are not on auction and they can be bought by directly
from the seller by paying the requested price.
The seller can post the number of items he wants to put on sale and also
the time for which the auction will stay open. Once closed the item can
again be posted. It does'nt take too much time to do that.
Its better than the CD mailing list cause the net in general seems to
have a wider audience and reach. Say, as a resident of bangalore, I
would not really be inclined to join a mailing list by ilugd. Though, I
know many people do join many mailing lists at a time, like I am
subscribed to lists from 10 cities right now. But baazee.com, IMO, would
cater to broader audience. I know RHCEs who don't have a clue what
mailing lists are ? But they do know about baazee.com.

I think we are trying to solve a different problem here.
Efficient duplication and distribution of CDs.
That involves a LUG member to just provide the master CDs and let the CD
distributer handle the rest including duplication(which B T W involves
significant time and effort)

Yes, I think rather than the distribution, the actual task of CD
replication and collection from various sources is the main task and
this is what should be taken care of first. I would suggest, that this
be done in the monthly meetings. We can make a list and the number of
CDs that would be sold out in a particular month and ask volunteers to
bring in 3-4 copies of the distros which they can burn and bring from
their own copies and then next month distribute the money again to the
members whose items have been sold on baazee. I hope I was able to make
myself clear :)
Basically, this way the users get their money for duplicating the CDs
and ilugd gets a name for distributing those CDs in the first place.

Not at all. Off-topic is OK, if only it WAS NOT A COPYRIGHT ISSUE.

Guys, please, please, do not do this on this list. You wish to rip off
someone's poetry, or software, or movies, feel free to do, in the privacy of
your privy.

Not on this list. And that means, you, who were going to ask for Oracle
CDs. Yes, you over there.

I don't give a s**t for ghazals and /or Jagjit Singh, and even
if I did I wouldn't be posting about them to a Linux list.

Bad user! Go sit in the corner and stay there. No bone for
 you tonight!

Vivek Raj, i belive it would have been a good idea to tell the
Vivek person politely first time, about his mistake. If you find
Vivek it difficult to this for every user (who commits a
Vivek mistake), you can just add this to guidlines for posting,
Vivek and write a script or something which will automatically
Vivek email the link (to guidlines for posting) to the list once
Vivek every month.

From the guidelines (http://kandalaya.org/guidelines.html):

Don't post Offtopic messages. NO, we dont want to know if a really
cool MP3 site with whole GNR collections is out there, or if the
taste of Coke's changed again! Try being as close to Linux, GNU,
Free Software and/or Open Source as you can be, and if the itch is
irresistible, let it atleast have to do something with computers.

IMO even the meanest intelligence would be able to make sense out of
that excerpt, and it would require a very special kind of stupidity to
post about GNR (or equivalent) after reading that.

And is it really only my job to ensure that the list stays meaningful
and on-topic? I'd agree that is the case if I owned the list, but
frankly (which unfortunately again means rudely), the options are
either (a) I do own the list, in which case everyone submits to
whatever arbitrary decisions I make and Amit and his ilk are out as of
yesterday, as is anyone who doesn't like my brand of shoes, my type of
music or my preference in cigarettes, or (b) we all own the list, in
which case we all take responsibility for the content that gets posted
on to it.

In other words, the guidelines are there, your suggestion to post them
automatically to the list is there, what are you waiting for? :)

OT / COMMERCIAL are still meant to be tags for topics that are
tangentially related to the list topic. For instance a joke on Linux may
be tagged OT etc etc etc.
If you are into ghazals find list for that or start a new list at
.so many list hostings possible ...
I would go with Vivek that tell a guy who does something wrong and it
may work out better in the long term. If repeated transgressions take
place flame directly and not through the list.
Serious issue Ghane had raised is violations of copyright in copyleft
world.

[ilugd] OT: FLOSS pitch

2004-06-03 Thread Sudev Barar
Selective snip of argument in favour of FLOSS:
Open Source Software and Linux - avoiding a lawsuit
by Alan A Hodson

In the not too distant future, when taxpayer groups decide to hold
their school districts and Board of Trustees accountable for the
senseless spending of hundreds of thousands of dollars in computer
technology purchases, especially software, there will be court
sessions where the Prosecutor will be grilling the district's Legal
Counsel with questions similar to these:

P: Was the district aware of the existence of Open Source
applications that involve no cost and no licensing fees to install
in Mac and PC laptops?
LC: Yes, I am aware of at least one department that after purchasing
laptops found that they had no money left for software, so they used
StarOffice, an Open Source application that is equivalent to
Microsoft's Office...
P: Are you saying that the district knows that there are software
products that require no licensing, can be given to teachers and
students to use, and still insist on paying hundreds of dollars per
computer to provide basic functionality to desktops and laptops?
LC: I am told that the real world uses Microsoft, so the district
buys the product the child is likely to see in the workplace when
they graduate.
P: Please indulge me - what kind of car did you, madam, learn to drive
on?
LC: It was a 64 Ford truck with standard transmission...
P: Did you learn to drive 64 Fords only, or were the skills learned
transferable to any car, anywhere, at anytime?
LC: You saw me parallel park this morning, what do you think?
P: I frankly was impressed... very precise maneuvering. The point
is, regardless of how you learn a skill, if you learn it well, you
will be able to use it appropriately in the future, don't you agree?
LC: It seems reasonable to accept that statement.
P: So, if the skill of learning word processing, spreadsheet use and
presentation software use is learned correctly, say using software
that loads and saves in the real world formats, as Open Source
software allows, then there is no need to spend all that money for
proprietary products, is there?

Ammo for use when I make my next pitch for switch to FLOSS.

Vivek Raj, i didn't expected such an autocratic answer. I sent
Vivek the suggestion in reply to your mail cause you are the one
Vivek administrating the list (correct me if i am wrong). As you
Vivek are adminstraing you have the access to the mail server and
Vivek to appear to be the only peron who can upload a script to
Vivek server that can generate the mail and send it to list.

You don't need to upload a script to the server to do this. Just set
a cron job on your own computer that mails the guidelines to the list
each month or week or whatever frequency you think is useful. It'd
probably be more useful if you sent the complete guidelines instead of
just the link, since that makes it easier for people to read them then
and there -- I doubt if people who convincingly demonstrate the
inability to read the footers on each message (how to unsubscribe)
would actually visit a web page giving them information on how to
post.

BTW, I'm not the list admin -- Kishore and (I think) Nishikant are.

And sorry for flying off the handle. Not making any excuses --
unbelievably off-topic stuff on technical mailing lists like ghazals
and Indian politics and Hindutva and girls dying of cancer in Scotland
sets me off, and I'll probably do exactly the same thing next time :)
