Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-268
2004-08-19
-
Product : Fedora Core 1
Name: rsync
Version : 2.5.7
Release : 5.fc1.1
Summary : A program for synchronizing files over a network.
Description :
Rsync uses a reliable algorithm to bring remote and host files into
sync very quickly. Rsync is fast because it just sends the differences
in the files over the network instead of sending the complete
files. Rsync is often used as a very powerful mirroring process or
just as a more capable replacement for the rcp command. A technical
report which describes the rsync algorithm is included in this
package.
-
Update Information:
This update backports a security fix to a path-sanitizing flaw that
affects rsync when it is used in daemon mode without also using
chroot.
For more information see http://samba.org/rsync/#security_aug04

Tell your CEO (or whoever) to only send and receive GnuPG-encrypted

There's no way you can stop a sysadm from reading any file on a

As Sandip said, it is possible that the CEO hosts his POP account with
third party and trust them.
One could examine possibility of running sendmail under the UID of CEO
rather than root or whatever it runs. Then CEO should run it and also
should be member of all users group to be able to deliver. Just a
thought of a possibility.

[ilugd] Mozilla Calendar

2004-08-20 Thread gaurav mishra
Hello Frndz,

Mozilla.org has released the first official beta release of Mozilla Sunbird,
a standalone calendaring application. The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla
Calendar component, with a goal producing a cross platform calendar based on Mozilla's
XUL user interface language.

Sunbird is aimed at users who want a calendar application based on
Mozilla. The software works with the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Mozilla
Thunderbird mail client. Two flavors of the project are available -- one that works as
a plugin to Firefox/Thunderbird/Mozilla (known as Mozilla Calendar), and the
standalone calendaring application, currently known as Mozilla Sunbird.

The group says that it hopes to improve footprint size and performance by
focusing solely on the standalone calendar, and by removing components and chrome we
don't need. While Sunbird is still considered experimental, it is currently stable,
according to the project. Additionally, the group says that although Sunbird is
currently being used as the project's name, it may not be the final name for the
software.

The software is available for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X and can be
downloaded here. Screenshots of the calendar in both modern and classic themes are
available here.

2004-08-20 Thread gaurav mishra
Hello Frndz,

The KDE Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of KDE 3.3,
the fourth major release of the award-winning KDE3 desktop platform. Over the past six
months, hundreds of applications and desktop components have been enhanced by a
community of developers, with a particular focus on integration of components

Stephan Kulow added that improvements in terms of usability, stability and
integration are particularly noticeable in the KDE PIM (Personal Information
Management) suite.

Reflecting its international team and focus, KDE 3.3 is currently available in over
50 different languages. Partial translations into 30 other languages are also
available, many of which are expected to be completed during the KDE 3.3 life cycle.
During the past six months, Qt gained increased support for Indic languages, and
languages as diverse as Farsi and Frisian were added. With 89 different languages and
full localization support, no other desktop is as ready to serve the needs of today's
global community.

New applications
Kolourpaint, an easy-to-use replacement for KPaint
KWordQuiz, KLatin and KTurtle expand the list of education packages for schools and
families
Kimagemapeditor and klinkstatus make life easier for web designers
KSpell2, a new spellchecking library that fixes all of KSpell's shortcomings
KThemeManager, a new control center module to globally handle KDE visual themes
The Python bindings PyQT and PyKDE are now maintained with KDE in our CVS.

KDE 3.3 can be downloaded over the Internet by visiting download.kde.org.

Re: [ilugd] Is it possible to create an email account on sendmail notreadable by root/SA ??

2004-08-20 Thread ChP
I have read that the patches to RH 8.0 are available to make it compatible
to a security enhanced level where even the root does not have access to
everything on the system. The SE-Linux project aims at this and more. SE
stands for Security Enhanced.

Check out the following
http://www.securityenhancedlinux.com/downloads/downloads.htm for downloads
of specific kernel patches
http://www.securityenhancedlinux.com/ These guys provide a website
documenting some features and provide a distro
http://sourceforge.net/projects/selinux/ You can track the developments here
http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/index.cfm Yes the US National Security Agency
initiated the project and here is the project home page

BTW:That is precisely the point of FLOSS. Even the most absurd
requirements will find more than one equally eccentric solutions.
