[ilugd] Fwd: FedoraForum.org designated Official Community Support Forum

FedoraForum.org has been designated the Official Community Support Forum
of the Fedora Project. This decision has been made by comittee because
of the many advantages web forums have over mailing lists in support of
end-users. Nothing changes about the existing mailing lists, but we
encourage end-users to go to the forums first if they have support
questions. Development discussion remains unchanged on designated
mailing lists.

http://forums.fedoraforum.org

End-User Official Community Support Forum of Fedora Project
All users of Fedora Core and Fedora Legacy are encouraged to join the
forums here. Post questions in the appropriate forum, and any threads
that you participate can notify you via e-mail when someone replies. It
is generally very easy to skip over threads that you don't care about,
and find those that you do care.

  Bugs: #86718
ID: 200504-03

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Synopsis

Dnsmasq is vulnerable to DNS cache poisoning attacks and a potential
Denial of Service from the local network.

Background
==

Dnsmasq is a lightweight and easily-configurable DNS forwarder and DHCP
server.

Affected packages
=

---
 Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected
---
  1  net-dns/dnsmasq   < 2.22  >= 2.22

Description
===

Dnsmasq does not properly detect that DNS replies received do not
correspond to any DNS query that was sent. Rob Holland of the Gentoo
Linux Security Audit team also discovered two off-by-one buffer
overflows that could crash DHCP lease files parsing.

Impact
==

A remote attacker could send malicious answers to insert arbitrary DNS
data into the Dnsmasq cache. These attacks would in turn help an
attacker to perform man-in-the-middle and site impersonation attacks.
The buffer overflows might allow an attacker on the local network to
crash Dnsmasq upon restart.

Workaround
==

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
==

All Dnsmasq users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-dns/dnsmasq-2.22"

confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost
importance to us. Any security concerns should be addressed to

Package: remstats
Vulnerability : tempfile, missing input sanitising
Problem-Type : local, remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE IDs: CAN-2005-0387 CAN-2005-0388

Jens Steube discovered several vulnerabilities in remstats, the remote
statistics system. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Project
identifies the following problems:

CAN-2005-0387

When processing uptime data on the unix-server a temporary file is
opened in an insecure fashion which could be used for a symlink
attack to create or overwrite arbitrary files with the permissions
of the remstats user.

CAN-2005-0388

The remoteping service can be exploited to execute arbitrary
commands due to missing input sanitising.

For the stable distribution (woody) these problems have been fixed in
version 1.00a4-8woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been fixed in
version 1.0.13a-5.

We recommend that you upgrade your remstats packages.

Upgrade Instructions

[ilugd] Linux Uses Mac

Linux creator 'switches' to Mac

By Macworld staff

Linux creator and self-confessed "media whore" Linus Torvalds has
admitted he is using a Mac as his main desktop.

Torvald told ZDNet Australia: "My main machine these days is a dual
2GHz G5. It's physically a regular Apple Mac, although it obviously
only runs Linux, so I don't think you can call it a Mac any more.

"As to the why... Part of it is simply that I wanted to try something
else, and I felt like there were enough people testing the x86 side
that it certainly didn't need me. Part of it is that I personally
believe there are two main architectures out there: Power [the PowerPC
chip is used in the Power Mac] and x86-64 are what I think are the two
most relevant ones, and I decided that I had to at least check the
other side of it out seriously if I really believed that."

This isn't the only reason however. Torvalds admitted: "Oh, and part
of it is that I got the machine for free. I'm really a technology
whore."

Torvald revealed that he was no longer using a x86 processor in his
main desktop machine in a forum posting in February, despite the fact
that he had "single-handedly revolutionized the use of Unix on the x86
platform, according to Silicon.com.

The only real solution i can see is to use IMAP, if your server supports
the IDLE command its even better and your emails show up in thunderbird
almost instantly, ofcourse you need a always on connection too. IMAP is
also great if you use multiple email clients and/or webmail. See if you
can use that. If its gmail you are referring to, that doesnt have IMAP
as far as i know.

2005-04-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have been using this Thunderbird for close 2 two months ? and I don't
recollect any interupt in downloading - oftne the mail just stops but
once it connects its back again and it did not download all the messages

Its happened to me a few times in evolution, though.

Also download what - the entire mail box ? I keep my mails on the server
as well as a down load ? And thats some 600 mails in two different
accounts-

Is there a solution ? really cannot afford to spend all the bandwidth on
downloading mails

Hi,
Last time when u downloaded all your messages, did the download
finish? or was it interrupted? In case it did not finish, the default
behaviour for pop servers is to download all over again.

Hi
In Gmail you will have to go to settings and export your addresses to a
.csv file , then fire up thunderbird and go to addresses - the rightmost
icon at the botton left of the screen - there you can import the csv file.

However there is a problem with the way thundebird reads the file you
will have to be careful to see that all the names have the right
addresse against them

[ilugd] Yet another Thunderbird problem

2005-04-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi
Today seems to be thunderbird questions day
So heres my problem:
Every once in a while when I start up thunderbird it decides to download
all (ALL) messages - all over again. Even those that have been
downloaded again. Why does this do it and how do I prevent this from
happening again.

I don't remember all the conditions exactly but I had pressed the
offline button to work offline and next morning while sending a mail I
pressed the online button. This is the only unusual thing I did.

what gives?

In the advanced section of the email account, there should be a drop

[ilugd] thunderbirs and multiple SMTP server

2005-04-04 Thread vivek khurana
hi!

I am using mozilla-thunderbird as mail client. Now i
am having a problem, how can i configure more than one
SMTP server. I have specified two email servers using
advanced option in SMTP settings. Now while composing
emails, if i select second SMTP server for sending
mails, they are always delivered using default mail
server.

How i can i force thunderbird to use different SMTP
server for sending emails.
