I would lookup your modem AT commands and disable the wait for dial tone
setting. If i remember correctly ATX3 used to do that, you can add this
to your init string and see.

ID: 200507-27

Synopsis

Ethereal is vulnerable to numerous vulnerabilities potentially
resulting in the execution of arbitrary code or abnormal termination.

Background
==

Ethereal is a feature-rich network protocol analyzer.

Affected packages
=

---
 Package/  Vulnerable  /Unaffected
---
  1  net-analyzer/ethereal  < 0.10.12   >= 0.10.12

Description
===

There are numerous vulnerabilities in versions of Ethereal prior to
0.10.12, including:

* The SMB dissector could overflow a buffer or exhaust memory
  (CAN-2005-2365).

* iDEFENSE discovered that several dissectors are vulnerable to
  format string overflows (CAN-2005-2367).

* Additionally multiple potential crashes in many dissectors have
  been fixed, see References for further details.

Impact
==

An attacker might be able to use these vulnerabilities to crash
Ethereal or execute arbitrary code with the permissions of the user
running Ethereal, which could be the root user.

Workaround
==

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
==

All Ethereal users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-analyzer/ethereal-0.10.12"

try gnome-ppp. its probably in the default repository but yu may need to
add the universe. using it is very simple. it even puts an icon in the
notification area and uses wvdial as a backend. don't use the GUI network
interface via network-admin, it sucks

This worked for me
1, Edit blacklist by comand:
$sudo vi /etc/hotplug/blacklist
and add the following line at the end of this file:
visor

2. Make sure you do not have visor module already loaded by:
$sudo /sbin/lsmod | grep visor
If it is there then remove it by command:
$ sudo /sbin/rmmod visor

3. Attach your Reliance Samsung phone to usb cable and run:
$sudo /sbin/lsmod | grep acm
This should show module cdc_acm loaded

4. Now configure your Reliance connection using modem path as /dev/ttyACM0

maybe your modem need some extra init strings. search for your modem's
name for search string and add it as init2 .or init3 parameters on
wvdial.conf.

Try kppp. Set modem to /dev/ttyS0. Check if you have
tone or pulse dialing and set as appropriate.

what is the make and model of the modem. u can try
pctel modem driver or hsfmodem driver. u can search
for them on the net and download the relevent driver.

try this at the shell prompt type "xaumix" (without
the quotes) and either use the right (->) arrow key or
use the "+" key (with num-lock ON) and increase all
the values on the left colum to max. press "S" to save
and "Q" to exit. It worked for me.

at the same time also give some information about your
hardware configuration.

[ilugd] Fwd: Microsoft Updates

2005-07-27 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi
Found this very interesting stuff on BBC - because of
a. Will the pirates have a harder time
b. Is MS copying some of the linux distributions methods of paying for updates

am personally very happy to have moved out of MS to Ubuntu.

regards
ram

 BBC NEWS
Microsoft steps up piracy fight
Microsoft has stepped up its fight against software piracy by
requiring users to verify their copies of the Windows operating
system.

Anyone downloading updates for Windows XP will be required to check
that their operating system is genuine.

Security updates are exempt from this in order to prevent people
spreading viruses across the internet.

A third of software worldwide is fake, according to industry group,
the Business Software Alliance.

Losing billions

Microsoft said that more than a third of its software is counterfeit,
which it says costs it billions of dollars of lost income.

With Windows accounting for 90% of operating systems sold worldwide,
cracking down on the pirates is one of the few ways for Microsoft to
expand its business.

"This is another tool in our arsenal," said David Lazar, director of
Genuine Windows for Microsoft.

Customers who discover that their copy of Windows is pirated have two options.

They can get a free version of Windows if they fill out a counterfeit
report identifying the source of the software, providing proof of
purchase and returning the counterfeit CD.

If they are unable to provide all the information, filling out a
report will entitle them to receive a copy of Windows XP Home Edition
for the reduced price of £56 or Windows XP Professional Edition for
£86.

Genuine article

The new policy is part of Windows Genuine Advantage, a scheme set up
by Microsoft in September to encourage people to use legitimate
software.

The firm has been offering incentives, in the form of freebies such as
photo slide-show software, to persuade people to use the service.

"We want to give customers a reason to purchase the genuine product,"
said Alex Hilton, anti-piracy manager for Microsoft.

So far, 45 million copies of Windows have been verified via the
system, although Microsoft has, as yet, no figures to gauge what
proportion of these failed the test.

Neither has it set a figure on the level it would like to see piracy reduced to.

"Aspirationally we want to remove piracy altogether and we feel the
majority of people want to use our software legitmately," said Mr
Hilton.

He advised anyone looking to purchase Windows XP to make sure they
only do so via trusted shops and websites.
