I, too, would like to put up a poster or two at my office (and
probably my friends' offices as well). From whom should I collect them
(one they are printed, that is!) ?

Also, I am interested in being involved in designing the poster. Few
of my logo designs can be found at
http://geocities.com/sau_nanda/logos.html I have also designed a
couple of posters for my college's Techfest.

Just for the record: any technophobic, out-for-fun accidental tourists
that land at the FICCI auditorium are likely to be disappointed, since
Freedel is actually being held at the PHDCCI, not at FICCI.

Last year when we were trying to publicize Linux Demo Day, volunteers
were chosen from different regions in Delhi (north/south/NE etc.). Some
of them were given the posters and anyone who wanted to help in
publicizing the event could collect the posters from them. Thus people
from Ghaziabad could collect the posters from Shehjar (who lived in
Noida at that time) and people in the South Delhi could collect them
from Raj's place and so on. I think this method can be used again.

Shehjar and me placed posters in the locality market areas and
community centers as well as in the college campuses. At that time I
worked in STPI Noida and I placed posters around my office too. A few
people from the nearby offices came into the event - not a bad payoff
for an hour's worth of work spent in utting up posters

I also remember that we were not able to put the posters in the South
Campus area because of the lack of time. Given the amount of time we
have this time, I hope someone will be good enough to volunteer to put
the posters in the South Campus area.

Last year there was a mailing list called [EMAIL PROTECTED] to which
people could send in their queries about the event. Any plans of
reusing that mailing list for this event too ? If yes, then do have the
email id printed on the posters

Cheers and hope to meet you all on the D-day :-)

[ilugd] freedel creative

2005-09-07 Thread Linux Lingam
dear all,

raj has titled my talk at freedel 'creative' and left me with a large empty
canvas. i could cover a few possible topics, could ya please choose what
would bore you the least :-)

1) digital typography with scribus, the page-layout software.
OR
2) inkscape and getting curvaceous with vectors.
OR
3) digital photo touchup with cinepaint.

OR
4) digital sound and music with agnula
OR
5) video-edit[er... drop this as it demands a properly configured box and a
mini camcoder and software that is still too primitive or too
crash-prone]
OR
6) something else.

please note that i seldom deliver gnulinux-based talks that address techies.
all of the talks above are therefore focussed on the newbie, even
technophobic, out-for-fun accidental tourist that lands at the ficci
auditorium. or whoever wants to see a gnulinuxer dressed in some fancy
sarong and playing a didji or whatever. also, could someone please return me
my bright red rubber nose? i think kishore borrowed it and has taken a fancy
to it

the above talks will also have a few minutes devoted to the most
hotly-debated topic in the creative domain, that impacts everyone bitten by
a byte, or who has ever let an mp3 song enter their ears: creative commons,
digital rights (restrictions?) management. how using a muft and mukt
software is the first step in 'alternative creativity' and choosing a
mukti-oriented license the second step in ushering in a new value system. am
surprised to see that india has not yet woken up to the cc, and ironically,
we are one of the biggest authors and conjurers of art, design, music,
crafts, and other creative expressions in the world.

so please vote for your topic.
as usual i'm clueless, and need time to brush up (bad pun) such dense
topics.

:-)

[ilugd] Firefox not resolving Domain Names from Ubuntu Live CD

2005-09-07 Thread Anupam Jain
Hi everyone,
I recently tried to salvage some important files from a friends Laptop
which had just crashed (previously running Windows XP) by booting from
the Ubuntu Warty Live CD and then connecting to the internet to mail
the files. He has MTNL Broadband which seemed to be working fine (I
tried pinging google.com) from the command prompt. But Firefox somehow
wasn't able to resolve the domain names and would get stuck at the
"connecting to www.google.com" stage. I tried typing the Google IP
address (66.249.89.104) and that worked fine but no links would work
on the page because again it would get stuck on the "connecting to
images.google.com" or something similar..

Running short of time he reformatted the hard disk and made the
reports again.. But I still haven't been able to figure out what could
have been the problem.. Any insights anyone?

- AJ

[ilugd] upgrade to apache2 on freebsd

2005-09-07 Thread Kenneth Gonsalves
hi
I have an account on a freebsd server with:
apache+mod_ssl-1.3.33+2.8.22_1
running. I now need to upgrade to Apache2. The server is in a production
environment and i dont have a freebsd installation to try out. My
question is, do i do a pkg_delete and delete apache1 and then do a
ports 'make install clean' to install apache2? Or can i straight away
do a 'make install clean' for apache2, which will take over from
apache1. Or will the second option wind up with two apaches running?
