 Since this is a hard disk and I assume a non hot swapable one - your
 media has had a failure. Just get it replaced and use a different media

You would need space to save the data you can retrieve. Therefore
either go for a new hard disk with minimal OS installed or you have a
machine with sufficient disk space accessible using knoppix.

there are at least 50 to 100 financial accounting packages on linux - 
most of them free and opensource. Many of them with thousands of 
installations worldwide. Please dont spread fud - incidently kalculate

if the data is just a few cd's worth copying them using an external cd 
writer would be possible. Or are you saying that because of the problems 
in the hd it won't even let me write to the cd's

Alternatively I could use an external usb connectable hd and use knoppix 
to transfer rapidely ???

would any of these work

You basically need to do two things :
1. Boot from a reliable media - could be pxe, knoppix, zipslack
anything as long as it is not from the corrupt hard disk.
2. Ensure sufficient disk space is available to the OS once you have
booted from something. This could be a CDR, DVDR, local hard disk, USB
drive, NFS mount, FTP server, another linux box with SSH on it.

The choice is yours to make depending on what you have easily available
at your end.

this is nothing to do with avsap - kalkulate claims to be the first and 
only FA linux package in all its advertising. This is simply not true. 
Incidently, from a functional view point it has much more functionality 
than avsap. (I attended a talk and demo on kalculate recently and that 
is the source of my information). For that matter. And apart from 
avsap, i am keenly interested in any effort for development of FA open 
source packages and will continue to react to any post on the topic. If 
you think that this is just to 'promote' avsap that is your problem not 
mine. Further, even a commercial post has to stick to facts - i have 
every right to point it out - there is such a thing as 'truth in 
advertising'.

I was a VSNL dialup user.. .. and lately transferred to MTNL broadband. The
connection is good. and mostly stable. Only issue seems that sometimes
the router refuses to connect. Reason given by MTNL staff is that the
telephone exchange is beyond 5kms from my home.. and as a result the signal
becomes weak. ? not sure of this though. :(

Then you tell us what the truth is. I see that the project had their first
release more than 3 years ago. Was their another FA Linux Package at that
time in India/Asia-Pcific (as their site claims)?

Once installed you actually get a web interface to manage it. There are
several other options as well. If you like get in touch with me when in
Delhi next and I can give at least a dozen such distros to try!

i stand corrected - probably the first in india. But certainly not first 
in the world as declared in red letters on their site. Maybe if they 
remove the 'first in the world' it would be ok. But anyway in the 
original post, they had just said 'first' without qualifying the region 
- which is still not true.
