[ilugd] Removing ^M from text files in vi

2005-12-12 Thread Mayank Jain
Hi,

I used Anjuta on Ubuntu 5.10 to write my code, committed it to the CVS
at Novell Forge. But when i try to download the code-tarball from the
CVS, i'm getting strange ^M characters at the end of every line in all
files.

Though i can remove them by deleting them one-by-ne, but this is
getting very annoying.

What can be the possible reason for this how can i stop this from
happening how to get back my code without ^M?

is the tarball made automatically or manually? if manually maybe it
is done by someone on a windoze machine? afaik the only way these

It might be so that the script that autoconfigures the tarball does so
processing the file on a Netware machine - a DOS format file is a
probability.

On a Linux box also, there might be a script error during the
automagical conversion.

Re: [ilugd] DNS setting for the DNS-Server :- How to resolve any request to a Fixed IP address

2005-12-12 Thread Saurabh Nanda
The hostnames that you're referring to (Google, Yahoo, etc) have
multiple IP addresses. Any one of those IP addresses (randomly
selected) is returned each time you query a public DNS server. This is
a method for balancing the load amongst multiple servers. Why do you
then want to use only one IP address?

Anywho.. if you've set your mind to it - here's the solution that will
work on your local machine:

Edit /etc/hosts and add the following lines to it. These are actual IP
addresses of Yahoo/Google. You may use different ones if you like.

www.google.com 66.102.7.104
www.yahoo.com 66.94.230.48

I think what you are looking for is someway to blacklist certain
hostnames, so that they resolve to some 'You are not allowed to see that
page in your office time' . What you need is squid. Squid works as a
proxy and can serve dns requests as well. Check its docs on how you can
blacklist hosts.

[ilugd] Some thoughts on LUGs (globally)...

2005-12-12 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
One of the biggest challenges facing LUGs at the moment stems from the
fact that a growing number have existed for ten years or more. Many of
us know each other quite well, and newcomers often find it difficult to
get a word in without feeling that they're somehow offending those to
whom their problem seems trivial and not worthy of detailed discussion.

Some LUGs occasionally flare up into completely pointless flame wars
that start over trivial macho tendencies of many members to prove their
technological prowess at every opportunity. This tendency has led to
some community fragmentation, with a single group forking into a group
for veterans and one for newcomers.

The problem is that such segregation comes at a cost and is often
detrimental to the overall community because it discourages the
involvement of newer members who might in time come to pass valuable
information to those who come after. -- Jon Masters, in
www.linux-magazine.com January 2006 issue.
