Have a look at /etc/resolv.conf file when you are NOT connected to the
net, and check if its contents are the same when you are connected.

When connected, /etc/resolv.conf should contain the entries for your
ISP's DNS servers.

If not, tell whatever program you are using to connect to the net to
select the DNS servers automatically.

Can not say it is Ubuntu problem since I am replying while logged in
to gmail with Ubuntu.

Is the proxy set to block this traffic or https traffic? More likely
latter as you are saying login is prevented.
Could be that DNS of proxy is failing. In that case find out IP for
the website you want and add it to your local /etc/hosts file
alongwith name of site. Try this as a temp work around.

hi Tushar,

32bit apps run fine under the > 32bit stuff that the x86_64
specifications stipulate ( its not 64bit, but thats another conversation
for another day on another thread ).

one of the reasons a lot of people say it wont run is because either
their package management system is incapable of handling dual / multilib
and needs funky chrooting tricks or they run the 'build eveyrthing
yourself' sort of distro's and lack the ability to cleanly build
i386/x86_64 pacakges.

look at your options, choose a distro that has the functionality you
need - and things work fine ( as I type this running thunderbird/i386 on
a x86_64 laptop ).

Re: [ilugd] Require 64bit Linux OS

2006-03-09 Thread Anand Kapoor
Actually there are certain applications/modules that do not run if
they detect the environment to be 64 bit. I have encountered, this
problem with the tun drivers on 64 bit (http://vtun.sourceforge.net/)
.. I was forced to move to a 32 bit architecture to run the same.

You'd better check out your requirements, day to day 32 bit
applications work just fine though.

Depends on your ability to manage and support such a system,
additionally i would recommend you take adequate redundancy measures to
ensure uptime if you will depend on the server for so much.

We use a simple fedora based distro in various locations, called
Clarkconnect (www.clarkconnect.org). It has free versions and paid
versions, depending on your needs, and is made to be used for tasks
mentioned in your email. We dont have any admins on staff but are able
to use most of what you have mentioned above through a simple management
interface and support forums on the product site.

It is for a quick and simple solution for most of your problems. It is
not for people who want to or are capable of putting together such a
solution from scratch using a generic distro.

Another point i forgot mention, personally i would keep the db/pdc/cvs
behind the firewall for obvious reasons, you may decide otherwise.

cheers,
Ankur.
