True. But I would like to ask if broadcasts made by a public broadcaster can be
shared
for non-commercial public sharing. How is it done the world over?

ummm.. maybe not. i just googled the lok sabha tv site,. they seem to
webcast their shows. so you could check it there.
i also hope eben moglen requests if not insists, that his segment be
published under a copyleft license or something.
anyone has eben's email id? please write him to check or confirm if this is so.
else, if you have his id, please share with me via direct email. will
write him to request him, too.

in any case, gora's earlier message of video uploads of the eben talk
on saturday, am sure will be under a copyleft or cc license.

The people video-recording it will be cleaning it up, and giving a
copy to Sarai, whereupon we will put it online. They themsleves
also ditribute videos online.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu i386, and 64-bit versions are also always available at
Sarai, as are various other distros, including Debian Etch. We are also
collecting full repositories.

[ilugd] gpl3 talk + ubuntu = bliss

2007-06-11 Thread Linux Lingam
hi,

eben moglen's talk on saturday at iic was highly-stimulating. i saw
quite a few people clicking photos, recording videos, and perhaps
blogging etc. could you please point me notes, transcripts or other
logs of his wonderful talk?

it requires a more thorough read and study to assimilate his vast
array of ideas.

at the end of the talk a few people approached me for cds of ubuntu.
soon the outside desk was happily converted into 'cd-sharing'. ubuntu
7.04 discs shared:

1) 64-bit version
2) standard version.
3) alternate-iso. this is for systems that can't handle the graphic installer.
4) ubuntustudio.

you may collect the following people for further requesting and sharing cds:

01) karunakar, who copied a few to his laptop.
02) anand shankar, on to his thumbdrive.
03) Satyakam Goswami
 . . .

quite a few other people also copied cds to their laptops, and to some
i just gifted the extra copies i had. can't recall everyone's name at
this moment. could you all please share your names here if you wish
others to contact you for further copies? thanks.

all of us happy folks missed kenneth gonsalves. but am sure if anyone
contacts him, he would be happy to share cds of ubuntu with everyone,
too. he's NRC-FOSS, and a great guy for community-building.

hi sandeep, long time!
:-)

howto improve grayscale images while converting them to black&white:

a) using brightness/contrast is a quick and not so efficient method,
as you've discovered.

b) use the 'levels' command. the histogram that shows up allows you to
choose what should be considered black, and what should be considered
white. so anything lighter than the 'white' you choose also becomes
white, and anything darker than the 'black' you choose also becomes
black. the grayscale in the middle allows you to choose what will be
neutral grey. don't worry,
it's a playful thing, just drag around with your mouse on all the
settings in 'levels' and you'll see how it dramatically alters the
image.

c) 'posterize' is another in-between step. it reduces grayscale of 256
shades, to far less shades, which is the equivalent of enhancing
contrast.

d) play around with 'curves' which also dramatically alters tonality.
think of 'curves' as a graphic equalizer normally used on a stereo
system, used for visual images.

e) more advanced techniques call for using 'chops' which stand for
channel operations, first hacked together by kai krause.

oh! i could go on with several dozen more creative hacks for enhancing
contrasts! i recall when long ago i used to conduct workshops around
'digital image-editing' i'd spend about 2 hours just explaining all
the techniques around this one single topic. it is really quite
fascinating! but am sure the above could help you out with your
problem.

see ya around at one of our LUG or similar meets, buddy.

[ilugd] Any recommendations for OCR?

2007-06-11 Thread Sandip Bhattacharya
I discovered Tesseract, and found to my delight that a package already
exists in Ubuntu Feisty for it. However, this works poorly on color
or grayscale. The ImageMagick covert program does a woeful work of
converting documents to black and white(not grayscale) before the
OCR program works on it.

I have tried converting the files to B/W TIFF myself, using Gimp. But
no matter how much I fiddle around with contrast settings, etc., the
black and white images are pathetic. I cannot believe that conversion of
grayscale images to black/white cannot be better than this.

Any recommendations from others who have already gone through this agony?
How can we improve the input images of OCR programs like tesseract?

Thanks,
  Sandip
