Re: [ilugd] [Indlinux-hindi] Description of Hindi phonetic rules for aspell

2007-06-27 Thread Vikas Rawal
Gora and others,

I have been using hindi typing on linux quite a bit recently. I
do not need to say that it is really good, and far superior to
anything I have seen on windows. I have two small problems that you
may be able to help with.

I still have some problem with keyboard layouts. I use phonetic layout
most of the time but I still do not know where some of the letters
are. It will be useful if somebody could pass an image file that gives
the keyboard layout.

The second problem is that gnome-terminal does not show hindi text
correctly. I use mutt for my e-mail and open it on
gnome-terminal. Hindi text is not readable there. The half letters
come only with a halant, and the matras are also not correctly
placed. How does one extend hindi support to gnome-terminal?

I understand aspell is based on list of valid words, right? How about
this as a quick way to generate a starting version of such a list?

  a) store any public domain text in hindi/oriya in a text file. select
  inputs with reliable spellings.
  b) create a script that splits the file into words on different lines,
does sort -u, and then finally generates a sorted list.
  c) each of us run this script on any public domain local language text
that we find, and upload our lists to the indlinux website.

a master list can then be build from this?

We have done broadly what you suggest on several texts, and along with
input from other sources, we now have a pretty comprehensive list of
Hindi words, which should number about 30-40K by now. The problem is
to have it proof-read. At the time of proof-reading, we should also
have people add affix information for aspell. I will post a note about
this soon, and we can talk about a web interface to let people easily
do the proof-reading, and add affix information.

The other thing I am having a summer intern work on is building a page
scraper in Python that will crawl web pages, and grab text within a
specified Unicode range. As this would have to be proof-read for
validity, I see this as being more beneficial for (a) getting an idea
of common mis-spellings, (b) building a corpus in various domains, and
 (c) as a snapshot of how the language evolves, and how new words come
in. Maybe tie this to Newsrack (http://newsrack.in).

this wouldnt be perfect, and we will still have to manually keep on
adding to it, sorting any misspellings from our sources etc, but i
think this could still be a good start.

 Regards,
 Gora

What keyboard layout are you using? If you are not sure, maybe you could
tell us how you start up the Hindi keyboard part, and how you would type
a Hindi word, say namaste.

Unfortunately, that is not a problem that can be easily fixed.
From my understanding gnome-terminal cannot be easily fixed to
do proper rendering of Unicode, OpenType fonts, which is
currently needed to handle Indian languages. Probably the best
solution would be to develop a TrueType/console font for Hindi,
but that is a lot of work.

[ilugd] Google Desktop Finally Out for Linux

2007-06-27 Thread Lokesh Bhog
http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20070628/tc_pcworld/133543

Google Inc. plans to launch a Linux version of Google Desktop on Wednesday,
almost three years after the product's launch for the Windows operating system.

The application, designed for indexing and finding data in PCs, as well as
for searching the Web, also comes in a Mac OS X version, introduced in April of
this year.

Like the Mac OS X version, Google Desktop for Linux is a beta, or test,
product. The Windows version shed its beta tag already, meaning Google
considers it a more stable and mature product.

At this point, Google Desktop for Linux does not feature the Sidebar and
Gadget features present in the Windows version.

This Linux version, developed by Google's Beijing engineering team, is
available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, simplified and
traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese.

Google Desktop for Linux runs on Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.10, SUSE
10.1, and Red Flag 5.

Users can download it for free from http://desktop.google.com/linux/index.html

Kindly advise.

Best check with them. Or get some one to set it up for you. Are you
looking for volunteers? consultants? Please be specific.

IMHO people from telecos rarely know anything about security or networking.

Another quick way would be to host the next LUG meeting at your home
and get the inputs and maybe also get it set cost of snakes and
drink to be balanced vis getting inputs (may be) and making lots of

Hi,
Since this is an ILUG, I will start with the premise that you need a broadband
connection and you will be connecting to the Internet from a Wi-Fi enabled
*Linux* laptop/PC.
My personal experience with MTNL's Tri-Band has surpassed all expectations. I
am on a 256Kbps unlimited connection @ Rs 999/-.
I have a Dlink 502-T Adsl router (provided by MTNL) and a D-Link 2100 Wi-Fi AP
(i bought this).
To this setup connect 3 computers (2 laptops and 1 desktop). The desktop runs
Win2k/Debian etch and one laptop runs Ubuntu 7.04 and the other runs Windoze XP
Pro (wife's).

The Ubuntu Laptop (Toshiba with Intel 3945 wireless) connects to the Internet
flawlessly.

Please steer clear of Sify and Tata Indicom DSL if you can help it.

HTH
