Henry Chesbrough has an insightful look at why piracy is generally good for MS
in India.

I suspect most of the people on the mailing list knew it already, and see it
as the main reason why linux has been relatively slow in taking off in India.

But it is good to see mainstream media tackling something that seems counter-
intuitive in an economically sound way.

great news - interesting to see whether:

1. if the licenses are returned for rectification, whether MS will
rectify them
2. if either or both are approved what will happen

In any case it is good to see MS recognising the authority of OSI in

[ilugd] Bug in RPM or ??

Hi,

I'm running Fedora 7 on AMD64 architecture CPU and installed a package
freeciv via yum. freeciv requires libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0()(64bit)
which no package currently provides it on my system. So my question is,
why 'rpm' installed a package without installing all its dependencies ?
Or it is a bug in 'yum' ?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ rpm -q --requires freeciv |fgrep -i SDL
libSDL-1.2.so.0()(64bit)
libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0()(64bit)

SDL-1.2.11-2
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ rpm -q --whatprovides 'libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0()(64bit)'
no package provides libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0()(64bit)

MS spent a decade or so in China learning this lesson. I'm sure it is
documented thoroughly inside the company. You get a glimpse of this
sometimes, especially when Bill Gates himself says:

Or it is a bug in 'yum' ?

Further to your reply with the output, given proper packaging, yum
should have been able to resolve the dependencies and pull them down for
install. To really nail down the issue, I'd say that you might need to
take out livna and presto repo bits after a yum remove freeciv and then
try the install again (I am faintly hoping that it is not yum since for
me it does pull down SDL_mixer and timidity++ properly on x86, x86_64 boxes)

[ilugd] AGBM, and ILUG-Delhi elections at 2pm, Sun. 5th Aug., JNU

2007-07-31 Thread Gora Mohanty
Hi,

Sorry for the delay in sending this out, though all registered
members for whom we had a valid mailing address should have
received a paper notification of the annual general body meeting
of the ILUG-Delhi society.

The meeting will be held at 2pm, Sun., 5th Aug., at the JNU
Bio-Informatics Centre. For directions, see Area 5 (SIT and CBT)
on the map at http://www.jnu.ac.in/main.asp?sendval=JNUCampus
Enter from the North Gate behind Munirka DDA flats, turn left at
the T-point, and left again at the next T-point. The building on
your right is the administration building which anyone should be
able to direct you to. Turn in at the second right, and turn
immediately left into the parking lot for the auditorium. The
BIC (now known as CCNB) is immediately behind the auditorium.
Please feel free to call me at 9868527992 in case of any issues.

The annual elections will also be held at this meeting, with
Pawan Jaitley (PJ), peejay AT hotpop DOT com, as the election
officer. This time, there are active oontests for many of the
posts, and it is still not too late to nominate yourself, or have
another ILUG-Delhi member nominate you. Please send mail to PJ if
you are interested in contesting the elections. Here is the latest
list of candidates:
  President: Raj Mathur, Gora Mohanty
  Treasurer: Kishore Bhargava
  Vice President: Andrew Lynn
  General Secretary: Gaurav Mishra
  Joint Secretary: Tirveni Yadav
Member (2 posts available): Gaurav Mishra, Dhiraj, Honey,
  Atul Jha, Vivek Khurana
Please do come for what should be an interesting election.

Regards,
Gora

The next meeting is on the 5th, but that is the annual general body
meeting, along with the elections for ILUG-D office bearers, so we
can't have any presentations there. The next meeting is scheduled
for the 19th of August, though that will need to be confirmed by
the next slate of office bearers. We already have a speaker on
OpenMoko for that meeting. So, a presentation on this can either
be at the September meeting, or at Freed.

Re: [ilugd] usb-disk in happy hunting grounds. please help

2007-07-31 Thread Linux Lingam

Did you try connecting your device to a machine which
has usb 2.0 based bus ? Try connecting to a non legacy
hardware, your drive could be in pretty much good
shape or may require repartitioning at max.

Thanks vivek for the response.
alas! i just got fedup with the whole thing, decided to reformat the
whole hardisk to erase my data, and am returning the hardisk under
warranty. any hardisk that makes mechanical clicking grunting sounds
i'd not like to keep.
will try again with the fresh replacement.
thanks vivek and vikas for your help

Which version of RPM and Yum are you using?

 $ rpm -q yum

 yum-3.2.1-1.fc7

You should consider updating to yum-3.2.2-3. There were a lot of
bugfixes recently.

Cheers,

I'll definitely upgrade to yum-3.2.2-3, when it is available from Fedora

Re: [ilugd] backing up large weekly data

 dear all,

dvd discs have come down in price, but some of the
 data-files are
individually larger than 10gb (home video) and
 cutting and storing
sliced versions across discs is rather inelegant.

Take a harddrive of double or more capacity than your
total data and do a weekly rsync of all your data.
Simple :-)
If you tell us the layout for your data (or data
partition) we can write a script for you to automate
the backup.
