 Time to get another laptop?

I have an ATI based laptop, and have no problems with the compiz/beryl + aiglx
combo using xorg-drv-ati or with google earth. however, i dont really care much
for most of this desktop eyecandy, so just use ati's drivers ( since I do enjoy
a bit of enemy-territory + true combat elite + quake4 ) and get framerates
like
this :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ glxgears
45865 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9172.979 FPS
61548 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12309.445 FPS
59406 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11881.133 FPS
59597 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11919.334 FPS
61542 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12308.389 FPS
61425 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12284.986 FPS

and...

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
8041 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1608.200 FPS
8219 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1643.800 FPS
8326 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1665.200 FPS
8326 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1665.200 FPS

What non ATI based laptop do you plan on getting that will give you this sort
of
performance ?

btw, I also have a intel core2 - i945 based laptop and i wont bother publishing
graphic stats for that... its almost embarrassing.

As suggested, use AIGLX. AFAIK, XGL is no longer being developed. You
could also try gcj instead of sun-java. I've had some (but not all)
applications work with gcj-4.2.

It appears that you just need:

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

to fix your Java blank window problems with Sun Java.

Dear Friends

I reported you problems of both Hindi and Bangla in OOo in Ubuntu 7.04.
As Bikas Rawal suggested, I downloaded the latest OOo 2.2.1 and did
'alien -i --scripts *.rpm', after 'apt-get --purge' on everything
openoffice. And, really, as a pleasant surprise, all the problems were
gone: both Bangla and Hindi. Thank you.

does your modem have an ethernet port? if so, it would be worth it to
buy an ethernet card and connect through that - only a few hundred

Only a few usb modems work under linux.
http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/ is the best site i have found. They have
list of modem which have reported working/non-working. best of luck,
else KG's advise is best.
