[ilugd] Understanding Linux configuration files

2008-12-18 Thread Vijay Kakkar
Hi,
Understanding Linux configuration filesThis article explains configuration
files on a Linux system that control user permissions, system applications,
daemons, services, and other administrative tasks in a multi-user,
multi-tasking environment. These tasks include managing user accounts,
allocating disk quotas, managing e-mails and newsgroups, and configuring
kernel parameters. This article also classifies the config files present on
a Red Hat Linux system based on their usage and the services they affect.

Welcome to life at 10,000,000,000 bits per second! India is establishing
a National Knowledge Network, with a backbone in multiples of Gbps. The
initial phase would be implemented in the next few weeks, with JNU being
connected at 1Gbps. While the technical details of the project have
been put in place, it is of importance to look at content and
applications, and the rights behind these.

We are honoured that Richard Stallman, of the Free Software Foundation
would deliver a talk on

Copyright v/s community in the age of computer networks

at the School of Life Sciences Auditorium,
   Jawaharlal Nehru University

TIme: 6:00 pm
Date; Friday, 19th December, 2008

R.S. Mani, a Senior Technical Director with the National Informatics
Center would introduce the National Knowledge Network prior to the
talk.

I think there is some thing more to it. I suspect that USB tokens
containing the Digital Certificates are Windows Only and the Private
Key can not be exported out of the USB token. The IT Act 2000 does not
mandate compulsorily the tokens, but I suspect most providers give
such a token.

Is r8169 the correct driver for the 8111 chip? Pls. check Realtek's
site and confirm. I have a mobo with 8101E chip and all Linux distros
install the r8169 module. It worked sort of crippled (huge packet

for the 8101E, compiled the module and the NIC now works fine.

RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev ff)

Is r8169 the correct driver for the 8111 chip? Pls. check Realtek's
site and confirm. I have a mobo with 8101E chip and all Linux distros
install the r8169 module. It worked sort of crippled (huge packet
losses) until I visited Realtek's site and downloaded the proper driver
for the 8101E, compiled the module and the NIC now works fine.

It works some times and some times to make it work I have to pass
pci=routeirq kernel param.

The behavior is not consistent.

Thanks for your hint. I will see if the issue gets resolved after I
get driver from Raltek site.

 This is on-board the MoBo.

I does not matter whether the NIC is onboard or a physically separate

It could be flacky hardware or the r8169 is not quite the correct
driver for the NIC.

Let us know what you find out from your investigation.
