[ilugd] [Commercial] Migrate from current OS to Linux

2009-01-15 Thread Amit Sharma
Hi,

I offer my services to corporates who are interested in migrating from current
operating system to Linux due to reasons like:

1. Virus
2. Spywares/Adwares
3. Need to purchase OS
4. Formatting Machines once every 3-6 months due to various reasons
5. Blue Screen
6. OS becoming slow

Just migrated a well known corporate from a proprietary OS to Linux (approx 175
machines).

You can write to me for further info and clarification in this regard.

Thanks and Regards,
Amit Sharma

[ilugd] [Very-old-topic] Distro having best compatibility with MS related products

2009-01-15 Thread Smruti
All,

After being a freedom fighter for more then 3 years, today I am finding
myself, again standing in front of the same age-old question which I had to
confront during my days of initiation; *Distro*. But today it's not about me
getting bored...it's about a small but important step whose ripples are far
reaching.

Finally I managed to convince one of my managers to try Linux. She will
probably start with a dual-boot setup. Now comes the time for the old
questions. Which Distro to recommend. But this time the biggest criteria is
compatibility.

This is too huge a place to completely switch to Linux in a month or year.
It will take time. So, I have to start with ONE. The rest of the progress
completely depends on this ONE. So, the biggest challenge here is not to
fight but to co-exist with Windows.

So, below are some of the things that are done in the office in a regular
office.

~Connect to Windows Terminal Server for remote operations
~Mail Exchanging (Mail server is MS Exchange) and all other clients are
Outlook
~Intranet website has issues with Firefox(Well, honestly doesn't work on
anything other then IE)
~Extensive work in Office Suite, full compatibility with MS Office is a high
priority.

And some more which I may not be able to recall right now. So, could you
please recommend the best distro which is best for peaceful co-existence in
a M$ dominated environment.

Regards
SR

Re: [ilugd] [Very-old-topic] Distro having best compatibility with MS related products

2009-01-15 Thread Shantanu Goel

~Connect to Windows Terminal Server for remote operations
tsclient comes in almost all distros. Can be used easily.

~Mail Exchanging (Mail server is MS Exchange) and all other clients are
 Outlook
Dont know about this.

~Intranet website has issues with Firefox(Well, honestly doesn't work on
 anything other then IE)
No distro gives option for this but you can try installing IEs4Linux.
It works but has issues while closing, leaves zombie processes for me.

~Extensive work in Office Suite, full compatibility with MS Office is a high
 priority.

No option for full compatibility in any distro or otherwise.

Thanks
Shantanu

Hi all,
In fact something more about what the book is all about, who has
written it, how many pages, who is it targeted at would be nice to
know.

hmm, you are out of luck here.

~Extensive work in Office Suite, full compatibility with MS Office is a high

openoffice works good, if not fully compatible. If you are looking for
commercial support see

I would recommend openSUSE (or Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop if you
are looking for commercial support). One of the aims of the Novell-M$
deal was to build inter-operable software.
I would not be keen to discuss the rest of the aims.

BTW, I work for Novell's Suse division.
