frustrating. if i ever meet the ceo or product head or president of nokia,
i will slap him for forcing me to use a proprietary OS.

If you have gprs connection, you can update the firmware ov er GPRS,
 that is what I think.

naah! nokia thinks not. have tried that route too.

so ladies and gentlemen, here we are:
a full 779 contacts scrolling along merrily in evolution on ubuntu 9.04
with a bluetooth interface that drags and drops files between the
computer and the mobile,
but no way in hell for me to transfer those contacts from evolution,
over bluetooth, to the phone.

anyone knows of a cloud-cover, where i could upload these contacts free,
and then from there download into the phone, perhaps using a
client-software in the mobile,
or by some sync-o-magic between the mobile and the cloud-interface?

from the psychotic-realm of fantasy:

01. does anyone know of an OCR-in-video software that works on the mobile,
so i could video-record on my mobile all my contacts in evolution scrolling
at full-speed, and then the software munches the video-clip to extract
the data and sort it into the mobile?

02. anybody knows a yogi or a tantric who could induce temporary
telepathy between
the mobile and the ubuntu laptop so all the contacts could be
channeled astrally?

03. is there a free text-to-speech software that could read out all
the 779 records in evolution
which i could record using the voice-recorder in the mobile, and then
run a free software on the
mobile that handles speech-to-text on this recording, with a clever
script to save each field and record
in its proper place?

04. anybody has a large sledge-hammer so i could smash this mobile and
ubuntu-laptop into smithereens
after i jot down all the contact-details into a handmade-paper diary
with an ink-pen?

smoking!

If you can write a script like this-- then why not instead bluetooth all

You can also IMPORT the VCF files into Microsoft Outlook Express-- and then
use Nokia PC-Suite to synchronize your phone with outlook.

If attempting to smash you phone-- give it to me-- I will experiment with it
for few months, and then do the smashing for you!!! ;-)

just kidding abt the last-- bt hey... phones are always welcome to me!

If you have obtained a copy of the the sotware in a legal way, you can
use it the way you want.

If the software was licensed to you, you can use in the ways you are
 allowed to by the license.

If the license is a Free (as in freedom) / FLOSS / FOSS license, (a)
you got the copy in a legal way, and you can use it the way you want
to use it, and (b) you can further copy / redistribute / redistribute

Also, is it possible for me to change/modify it ?

Depends on the how you got it.

If you merely got a copy, you cannot modify it.

If you licensed it, AND the license permits it, you can modify it.

ALso, one more question ! If I code something, is it possible to

example, I made a code and I want (c) RMS etc,,, is it possible,

I cannot comprehend the utility of this question. You cannot push a

There is a utility ! for example, I am making a book Or software, and I
want that all the derivative work must be come under my copyright. for
example Mr A will download my software (copyrighted by me) and will change
to software and will release under same license and same author (that is
me), So I am getting copyrighted work with me without even my knowledge,
Anyone can modify my software and give back modification to me. Whether

Your choice; but really, look at the site again. WHile other
manufacturers have lesser number of models, and Nokia does have its
share of incompatible phones, in percentage terms, incompatible phones
from Nokia are far less than the incompatible phones from other
manufacturers.

Nokia is at least trying to provide some support once a while.

Others do not care.

One manufacturer actually uses the Linux kernel and refuses to give
out the code.

but no way in hell for me to transfer those contacts from evolution,

AFAIK, this phone has the Symbian OS.

So, try your luck at symbian.org.

Till then, try this jugaad, if you have the patience.

1. Find a SIM. (no problem with using your existing SIM).

2. Find a phone which works the way you want with the software you
have. Call it phone X.

3. Put the SIM in Phone X, put in whatever the SIM takes into teh
phone using evolution / wammu / gammu gnokii or whatever.

4. Put the loaded SIM in E611; move the contacts from the SIM to the phone...

5. Repeat the cycle as long as required.

heh.

My current phone is a Nokia. I have used LG, and 4 models 7 Nos. of
Samsung.

There ahve been other Nokias in the family (2 models, 3 pieces). Over
a period of time, support fo the Nokias improved, LG regressed,
Samsung remains static.

BTW, I am NOT giving nokia a clean chit. music.nokia.* is a candidate

ah yes., already did. there's a nice article there on using ubuntu

also browsed through allaboutsymbian.org to look for some .sis or

yup! this could be done. am aware of this.
am also aware of the nokia pc-suite outlookexpress route.

in fact, i must tell you that after several hours of mucking around in ubuntu
i finally gave up, and found a technique of doing this under mac OS,
by using iSync and resetting the device.
the contacts are back in my mobile. whew!

nevertheless, this topic is far from over.
i don't want to boot into mac OS to handle last decade's consumer-workflow.

there *has* to be a way of handling this under linux-based pcs.

in other news, nokia has kept its promise and opensourced symbian.

Read what you wrote again. You have answered yourselves.

You are confusing between assignment of copyright, and releasing of
modifications under the same terms.

When a contributor / modifier releases his modifications, he does not
give copyright in his modifications to you.

In fact, insisting on such assignment is NOT considered FOSS compatible.

However on running it i find fire vox processes the voice on a server
somewhere and hence there is a long gap before the text starts. This is
bearable however firevox imposes a 1000 word limit so that makes it
downright painful and one has to keep selecting and reselecting text. The
whole idea is to select a long document and have it play while you are
cooking or playing with the baby. Any ideas for straightforward text to
speech alternatives that dont impose such restrictions?

Hi,

I've played around with the contacts module in PyS60 on my E71. That
might work (specially since this is a one-way dump, not really a sync).

1. (optionally) export the contacts data to an easily parsed format.
2. upload the file to a webserver somewhere.
3. download and parse the file in a Python/PyS60 script and add
contacts.

Let the list know how it goes :)

anyone knows of a cloud-cover, where i could upload these contacts free,
and then from there download into the phone, perhaps using a
 client-software in the mobile,
or by some sync-o-magic between the mobile and the cloud-interface?

It should have been installed.

Install the texlive documentation, kile, Texmaker, texmacs and Lyx

Usually people use one of those IDEs for using tex, latex, pdflatex,
omega or context.

#latex abc.tex

TeX friends installs several hundreds of applciations, macros, etc.

An answer depends on what you want to do.

Typically, using TeX involves creating a .tex file in a plain text
editor, compiling the document using one of the half a dozen or so
appplications (*tex; pdf/pstex).

THe compilation would be required 2 or 3 times, depending on nature of
the doucment.

ALl this can be run from the command line, or a GUI, which has been
pointed out.

Several editors like Emacs and Vim do have a TEX ide built into them,
or as plugins.

I visited CeBIT this year and met the Perl community. They are very much
interested in getting in touch with the Indian Perl community. If there are

These pages might be of help:
http://www.tug.org/texlive/
http://www.tug.org/texlive/doc.html

TeX Live is a TeX distribution, i.e., it is a compilation
of packages that allows one to use TeX/LaTeX on various operating
systems. These are then often further bundled into system-specific
packages, as on Debian, etc. What you saw on the MacBook might have
been MacTeX: http://www.tug.org/mactex/2009/

There definitely are Perl developers (Devdas, Tirveni, me that I can
think of off-hand), but no Perl community that I know of. Are there
enough people to form a community at all?

Shall we set up a Wiki page asking Perl developers to add their names
