Add a USB wifi dongle to it to make it as a wifi access point. 3. Disable the wifi on your wifi router and connect via LAN your Linux machine to the wifi router. 4. Ask your family members to use your wifi dongle's access point to connect to the net. 5. Install vnstat on your Linux machine and you can monitor the total bandwidth (periodically). 6. Use iftop on your Linux machine to determine which user is consuming the most bandwidth at any given point of time (in realtime). Remember to press 'n' to disable name resolution, otherwise you'd see the most connections being established to your dns server. You can use a laptop with inbuilt wifi too instead of getting a USB wifi dongle and keep it On for the entire duration of your testing. If at night no body is using the net, then maybe you can put the laptop to standby. That sounds doable. Will try Vivek and get back to you if I am stuck somewhere. Thanks for the response. Hi, I have an Airtel broadband at home. As per Airtel's FUP even unlimited plans come with a 25GB cap on the usage.Even though i am on that plan since 8 months, since past 2 months after some 20 days i get a mail from airtel saying that my limit has expired and speed goes down to 256 KBPS (from 1 MBPS). At home, I seem to average about 18 - 21 GB a month, and this is including the fact that we do some streaming ( BBC's iplayer! in HD ) and i have internet radio running through the waking hours of the day. Yup, that's why even I am wondering. While airtel's site shows up my usage details including time/date and data transfered, i am quite unsure if that's correct, however i can't complain until i have some proof from my side. Is there a way i can find out the daily usage on each machine through a setup on a *single* computer? Does the router/modem device have an snmp option ? Not sure if that's there, probably if you guide me on how to find that out, i will be answer you. By the way, it's the default Beetel wifi router that comes with Airtel connection, if that helps. that is the only way ( doing metrics at the edge ) that you are going to get accurate figures. Also might be worth making sure your neighbours are not 'sharing' the connections :) Am sure they are not, as its secured and we know nobody in the neighbourhood, yeah we are bad at that :) - kB ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd
[ilugd] disk not ready
Hi, I have 4 partitions on my dual boot laptop, loaded with Ubuntu 10.04 and Xp. Initially i could use 3 of the 4 partitions in Ubuntu while all 4 in Xp. The 4th partition was detected as RAW system in ubuntu. To get all 4 working, i just re-formatted the 4th one through Xp, a NTFS partition. Now when i start my machine in ubuntu, at the start, before login screen, i get this message: The disk drive for /windows is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery. I tried waitingbut the wait never ended. I tried M, it gave me the shell, not sure what to do then. I tried S, i could login and to my surprise, I could use the partition normally. So now i can use the partition but each time at startup I have to press S to skip that screen. I know it is the sda9 partition, so I checked the /etc/fstab file : it says: # /windows was on /dev/sda9 during installation UUID=800E-359A /windowsvfatdefaults,umask=007,gid=46 0 1 So i added the line: /dev/sda9 /media/82gb ntfs-3g defaults,user,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 to the fstab file. Now, even though the partition is auto-mounted when i login in but the initial screen where I have to press S still exists. Please tell me where i am going wrong or what do i need to do so that that skip screen does not come each time on booting. If resetting the time does not work, you can always change the root password by booting into single user mode (edit the grub menu at boot time, add single to the end of the kernel line, and boot). This should bring up a shell prompt, at which you can use passwd to reset the root password. [ilugd] file transfer
hi all we have a network in our college hostels, now that requires a lot of file sharing and in fact transfer. since most of the systems use winduhs so they use vypress chat, which has a very good and fast file transfer rate. now the small amount of systems which use linux can't do that, or infact for file transfer just login to windows because it takes a lot of time copying in fact one of us tried configuring vypress for linux and used it through wine but it created a hell lot of problems, had to be installed each time, and hence we have stopped using that. now anyone suggest me a good lan software for linux with a good file transfer rate as well chat capabilities. Well one benefit is that if the code is seen, people can trust the software as there can be no malicious or nasty feature in the software.Another is,if others can see the code they can make improvements to the software and submit it back to the developer and many times bugs can be removed by the users rather than the developers. 2) i dont know much about GPL and other type of licences, but what my friend said that if someone purchases some software like we were talking about zend studio then zend people will give them the source code of zend studio. is this right? You need not give them out the source necessarily but the source of software should be placed in a place that is easily accessible and you should give information on how to access it. But, you have to give the source if the person asks for it specifically, but you can charge as per your wishes for the media eg a CD or a DVD if that was right and someone purchases that or any s/w with source code then can he make the some modification n sell using his own tag(ofcourse he can do modification). Yes the other person can do that but he has to give credits to the original developer. But who knows whether the a software produced by him has been reproduced by some other party and selling it. I mean, is there anybody who takes care of it(whether the original developer is being credited or not)? PS:- There are many OSS licenses like GPL, LGPL, CDDL, BSD License, etc. I haven't read any of them properly. The answers above may not be applicable to some of the licenses. You should read them properly if you want to deal with them. ___ ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
