Re: [ilugd] Linux LAN and BSNL Dataone

2005-08-22 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
hi,
the first thing that comes to mind is that if the bsnl
adsl device is connected to the switch directly then
it has to be a router. I believe bsnl is giving away
huawei routers with some connections.
if this is the case then you dont have to do anything
other than setting both pcs to dhcp as the router will
assign ipaddresses and also act as dns forwarder.
if it is a usb modem then what raj says holds good.

Re: [ilugd] How to create a new linux user on the fly

2005-08-20 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
Hi,
You have not told us what these linux users will do;
will they work as normal linux accounts with shell
logins etc?
Most people come up with this kinda requirement if
all that the user they want to create is going to do
is be a mail account i.e not have shell access but
only be able to access mail.
If this is the case, I would advise you to use qmail
with virtual mail users/domains.
The Qmail howto should help you sail through this
process. There are a lot of contributed utilities
which let you create new users on the fly (there's
even a plugin for squirrelmail).

Re: [ilugd] Asterisk server

2005-07-20 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
Hi,
I have implemented Asterisk in a Call Center in North
India. The best part was that the company providing
VOIP termination in the US (www.kall8.com) also runs
Asterisk so the two asterisk servers are talking to
each other on IAX (Inter-Asterisk Exchange) protocol
which is inherently better than SIP for trunking
applications. At the call center, the calls are being
routed locally using SIP to a variety of VOIP phones
both hard as well as soft (sjphone); in faact there is
also a 2 line Cisco ATA 186 thats talking to the
Asterisk box.
I would suggest that you start with the Xorcom Rapid
Asterisk distribution which is a debian distro
stripped down to contain only asterisk.

if you then run top and check whether 98% CPU is

Also disconnect the server(?) from the network and
test. This might give you an indication of whether you
are being flooded with some windoze worm.
you might also want to troll through the log files
like cache.log, access.log to find if there's any

Re: [ilugd] Mail Server HELP

2005-04-19 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
hi,
If I understand your requirement correctly,
you need the following:
a) Build an ERP(or is it groupware) system for your
college
b) Create an internal mailing system that users inside
your college intranet will use.
If this is so, the following might set you on the
right course:
a) set up qmail as the MTA
b) set up djbdns for your DNS
c) set up courier IMAP as the IMAP server ( is a pain
but eminently doable once you google around furiously
for a few days)
d) and, might i suggest, set up an LDAP server if your
college has more than 100 users.
e)use squirrelmail as your webmail client
f) dont forget to use either clamav or hauri as the
antivirus engine with clamscanner or amavis as the
mail scanning engines.
if you want to write your own mailer then use the php
mail functions; but read the rfcs before that.
pardon the top post but yahoo doesnt let me do
anything else.

2004-03-31 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
hi,
I am desparately looking for a linux distribution for
a Dec Alpha Station 255 @233 Mhz. I would appreciate
it if LFY could include one such thingy in their next
issue. The downside is that i might be the only guy
who buys that issue!

Re: [ilugd] DishnetDSL Howto

2004-02-11 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
hi,
fantastic effort! I was trawling the net for a similar
solution as a friend wanted to change over from WinXp
to Linux (thanks to me!!!) but had reservations
concerning his DishetDSL connection.
My faith in Linux and the ILUG community is reaffirmed

[ilugd] Re:IMAP makes my server slow

2004-02-09 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
hi,
thought I'd share a few points: -

I have changed over to Qmail (for Maildir support) and
I use sqwebMail as the web mail client (Its supposed
to be the fastest webmail on earth!) which reads
directly from the Maildirs instead of Imap
connections. Also for posterity I have a Courier Imap
server which handles Maildirs. Believe me, My server
is a P-III with 128 Megs and I host 3 virtual email
domains. Things really are fast!!!
Another pro for the Maildir format is that there is no
single mbox (like in SendMail(ugh!)) hence searching
is also faster.

[ilugd] qmail-ldap problem

2004-02-05 Thread Shivkumar Jagannath
hi,
i have managed to get qmail up running with virtual
domain support through vmailmgr and webmail thro
squirrelmail.
I am now trying to achieve the same thro LDAP. i
downloaded and applied the qmail-ldap patch, used
QLDAPINSTALL to do everything but still am not able to
get it to work. any ideas? the qmail-send is supposed
to create the virtual user's home dir as specified in
the ldap entry.
in case the above makes some sense, i will provide log
outputs to anyone who cares to look at em. btw I also
got a lot of info from lwq,lwq-dap, and this
