In one of interview of RHEL I have been asked following question. Please help me in getting answers 1) Without using dmesg command and messages and dmesg log file, how one will find that hot pluggable drive just inserted has been detected by kernel or not. 2) Are device file corresponding to this drive will be created automatically? If no which command will create corresponding block device file in /dev. 3) If these is no way for automatic generation of block device, how major and minor number of a disk can be figured out so that one can use mknod device_name b maj_no Minor_no? 4) If this disk is configured and partitioned successfully. One has copied /boo, / , /var and /usr of running system to this disk on corresponding directory. What has to be done to write bookable super block /MBR on this disk so that one can boot from this disk on next reboot. 5) without using dmesg and message file, how one can get prior information that a particular disk is malfunctioning and going to crash / fail. [ilugd] which image of NIC (gerenated from rom-o-matix) should be burn for a NIC
I have installed PXES 1.0 on FC3. Nodes have NIC 8139b. Nodes are booting successfully with image (.zdsk) copied on floppies. Now I wish to generate rom image from rom-o-matix.com for this card (Vendor ID- 10EC,PCI ID- 8139) so that I can burn on EEPROM. But I am not able to figure out which image formate i should copy on eeprom out of .zrom , .zpxe, .elf (generic) .elf (linux bios). Ppl help. Any documentation that explain has explaination of all different types of image. How to recognixe that which card support pxe type of booting and which etherboot. Dear All I am working on m-system disk-on-chip 2000. I have iso image of a bootable Cd of 32 Kb size. I wish to copy it on the ext3 filesystem present of disk-on-chip so that same image can boot from it. I know that there is mkisofs for converting ext3 files to iso. How to do vice versa? And how to insure the boot sector is being copied on disk-on-chip boot sector? [ilugd] How to know which video card has been detected during autoprobing?
Dear All I have a motherbord using Cirix chipset and processors. Manual says that mother board use national semi conductor gx1 diplay card. But XFree86 ver 4.x.x does not work as expected. BUT When we installed mandrak community linux on the same system, it automatically detected the video card as well as monitor. I want to know how can I grab which video card and which type of monitor has been recognized by autodetection process and what value it is using e.g resolution 800x600, video card memory, hardware acceleration, colour depth, monitor horizontal fq and vertical frequencies. Is there any utility to know these parameters of video cards monitor. Your input will help me in solving a crucial Linux based installation. Off the cuff make groups for each printer and chown of the printer device to root:printergroup1 etc etc...and chmod to 660 -- Sudev Barar It is true in case of all the printer are using local device file. But in my case except one all the printer are remote printers (i.e printer configuration use rm= rp= ). In Windos OS we have to remove everyone permissions and add the users to whome we have to give permissions. Any equivalent in Linux. [ilugd] Green windows when starting rdp sessions of PXES to a windows machine
Dear All We are trying our hands with PXES. We have created customized iso image successfully. Iso image includes XDM and RDP. When and rdp session starts for a windows 2000 server, we are getting a windows screen with a lot of greenish background color. To know the cause of the problem, we started experimenting with switches/ options of rdesktop on a Fedora Core 3 machine. We observe that whenever we use -C option (i.e use private color map) windows server session start with green background. On the other hand rdp session started using rdesktop command without -C option, works fine. Thus, in our case, we conclude that if we use rdesktop windows_machine_ip -u user_name command (without -C option) our problem may solved. MY QUESTION IS: We are not getting any configuration option in PXES-0.9 pxeconfig screen to choose the option of rdesktop. So it will be great help if any one shares how to change rdesktop options once iso image is created? I am able to mount iso image on a loop back device using command mount /tem/psex-0.9.iso -o loop=/dev/loop1,rw /mnt But not able to figure in which file of iso image I have to make changes so that rdp session will start without -C option. query about monitor horizontal vertical frequencies Dear All I have a BPL monitor. This monitor work fine with a ready made thin client when I choose 800x600-60 monitor setting. But same monitor is not working with fedora core 3 installation where Compaq HP monitor are being auto detected working fine. As I know here 60 means 60 Hz vertical frequency. There is no setting to choose vertical frequency in this thin-client. Q1- Since I have to make this monitor work with FC3, may any one suggest what horizontal frequency I have to choose? Q2- Any generic type of setting that can work for any monitor (ofcourse it will not utilize maximum of monitor)? Q3- We are not able to find any configuration utility in FC3 (recived with LFY magz) for X Server e.g XFree86Setop, XF86Config etc. Please suggest way to do so. P= Parallel port printers connected to each client Problem- With server all the thin-clients are connecting over XDMCP protocol to get the desktop of Fedora Core 3 OS on the thin client. Each user has been assigned a separate username and password. Corresponding entry is present in /etc/password. They are usually using OpenOffice applications. We wish to configure all the printer connected on parallel port of thin-client such that user has permission of only one printer that is connected to his own thin-client. So that when ever he click on printer icon of open office writer, by default print jobs can go to the printer attached to his thin client. No other user can print on his printer. Even cannot see the printer of other user. May any one suggest how it can be done. /etc/printcap file do not give any user permission based control. Hope to get the suggestion from list members. In March 2005 issue, an article is on null groupware. I have installed the rpm shipped on PCQ 2005 CD. Please verify that the MYSQL server is running and properly configured. [ilugd] running a X aplication over twm display manager when user login
I have put 'exec /usr/X11R6/bin/twm' .Xclinets in user home directory so that when users login via GNOME, it start twm display manager instead of gdm. By default twm display manager doesnot start any application. I wants to start xclock and xpdf on twm when users login. Appending the another line 'exec /usr/X11R6/bin/xclock' in .Xclients is not helped me. May anyone explain how to start application on logon, when display manager has started. I am using IE6 and FireFox 1.0PR. If IE, then uncheck Show friendly http error messages in the advanced config first before looking at the error page again. Now, is this error message from squid or from the browser? You either use Safe_ports in combination with other http_access allow ACLs, or remove(or comment) the line http_access allow Safe_ports and try again. Squid ACLs are processed from top to bottom and the first condition which matches wins. Dear All Requirement has arisen to provide access to a group of machine categorized based on IP address. ACL created is as follows:- acl fulltime_ip 10.10.10.40-10.10.10.254 acl slot1_ip src 10.10.10.25 10.10.10.3010.10.10.35 acl slot1_time time 08:00-10:00 acl slot2_ip src 10.10.10.39 10.10.10.40 10.10.10.41 acl slot2_time time 10:00-12:00 acl CONNECT method CONNECT acl ncsa_users proxy_auth REQUIRED HTTP_ACCESS statements are as follows:- http_access allow localhost http_access allow ncsa_users http_access allow slot1_ip slot1_time http_access allow slot2_ip slot2_time http_access allow fulltime_ip http_access allow Safe_ports http_reply_access allow all icp_access allow all miss_access allow all http_access allow SSL_ports http_access deny all Q1= With above ACL and http_access, machines are not getting denied though they are supposed to be denied apart from their specified time slot. Q2= Is the http_access sequence OK? If not what should be? Q3= Please suggest better way of doing the same? Q4= Similar to http_access sequence, should I have to take care of acl statement sequence too? [ilugd] chpasswd.cgi: 'make' error (error: conflicting types for)
Dear All I have downloaded chpasswd from squid-cache.org/htpasswd. I wish to use to provide web interface to users to chane their ncsa passwd stored in /usr/local/squid/squid_passwd file. When I am runnning make after .configuration, getting below error. How can I fix the same. [ilugd] SQUID proxy - To communicate with existing proxy
Dear All I am trying Squid 2.5 STABLE6 on Fedora Core 3. Squid is starting without any error. My head office already has a squid proxy (HEADPROXY=10.10.10.1). Local office has another proxy server (netscape proxy server OLDPROXY=20.20.20.1) running on Windows NT. I am trying to install squid on another server (SQPROXY=20.20.20.2). How can I configure my SQPROXY configuration file to route the traffic to HEADPROXY . I unplugged my OLDPROXY from network and assigned its IP address to SQPROXY (to ensure that HEADPROXY is not denying if based on IP). Even it has 20.20.20.1 it is not displaying the page http://google.com. Its try few minutes, and then Mozilla browser says, DONE without displaying google.com page. [ilugd] TIMEOUT_FIRST_UP_PARENT error in access.log of squid
When I am trying to accesses a web page thry browser on the same machine where squid is running, error being logged in access.log is TIMEOUT_FIRST_UP_PARENT. User are being authenticated successfully thru ncsa_auth. Few minuted browser trie to get the web page (with status messaage trying to get the web page) and finally says access is denied by proxy. My setup is like this My head office already has a squid proxy (HEADPROXY=10.10.10.1).
