If you can throw in an Ethernet adapter, it will work
well as a network device, may be a router or firewall
/ VPN.

Another use:
since you're anyway not currently using it you can give it to some
under privileged child or to some worker for his /her children..

Giving away something is often better than trying to extract every
paisa of value..

Though ofcourse it may not appeal to you and it's possible you may
have to give it to some one not from your own caste or strata of
society.

First, this is a 10 year old machine we are talking about. It's worth
less than you can imagine.

Second, do you really want a child's first contact with computers to
be in the form of Damn Small Linux? That's what is running on it now
and with no CDROM/ethernet and no support for booting from anything
apart from the hard disk, it will be extremely hard for any non-geek
to install something decent on it or to maintain it. Plus did I
mention yet that its ageing graphics chip is now rendering all output
with a greenish hue? The prehistoric monster impression complete, we
will lose an impressionable young mind to the clutches of Microsoft
the moment it's exposed to a windows based machine.

I'm all for education and charity but let's be pragmatic. This machine
is much more useful serving as a headless backup/data server under my
desk than being a first computer to someone else.

Probably have enough horsepower to

* make a backup pc (backuppc.sourceforge.net) - maybe after adding usb cards
for extra offsitednessosityisness TM
* make a recording studio? (add soundcards, Rs100 each 2nd hand)
* make a wan aggregator (ebox, pfsense) for SMEs or for yourself - needs lan
cards ( maybe Rs100 each second hand)

If you have enough slots you can surely do fun stuff with it.

A P2 333 might be fine for streaming a single stream of MP3s/videos
but you'll need an Ethernet in there first.

Also an upgrade to the hard disk if you intend to store videos on this.

Make your other PC as LTSP server then use this PC as a client. Voila
now you have two fast desktopsto be shared with some you.

Well my other desktop is an 833 MHz P3 barely able to push its own
weight around so I don't know how fast that configuration is going
to be :)

Though I do have two laptops (with relatively better configurations)
and a wifi network at home so media/data server idea is the most
appealing one right now..

Another idea that I had is to use the PC as a remote controllable
music player.. i.e. I can dump all my music files on it, attach decent
speakers and a bluetooth dongle, install anyRemote
[http://anyremote.sourceforge.net/] and voila! I can remotely control
XMMS to browse through the playlist and play songs. I can even
disconnect all the i/o peripherals from the PC and keep the main unit
hidden under the table somewhere.. How's that for a hassle free
solution :)

Now if only I could find a way to install anyRemote on Damn Small
Linux (which is what the PC is running right now). Any pointers?

Since I don't have a working cdrom drive on that computer, installing
a better linux distro is gonna be a whole production in itself..
